T’Challa had already become Black Panther while his father was alive. His father passed on that mantle while remaining king. T’Challa had to give up the Black Panther powers for the ritual combat to inherit the crown. I mean I love Pitch Meeting, but that actually did make sense in the movie.

It was explained why T'Challa already had the Panther powers. It was because his father was already old and needed to pass on the mantel.
