Neil Tyson at the beginning of this video talks about how (due to the genetic diversity of Africa), the continent is home to the smartest (also dumbest) people in the world.
His statement is the first 3 minutes of the video while my commentary covers the remaining 12 minutes

With concern to Africa, another thing that strongly contributes to negativity dominance is the conscious focus on negative stories from Africa by Western media. It's only purpose is to feed that negativity bias. It affects both those outside of Africa and those within Africa.

If you're from Africa and you're yet bothered about what Western media says about Africa, then you have never received true education in the life you're living. There's nothing special about the Western World other than exploitative capitalism anchored by state-sponsored violence against anyone who doesn't agree with them. The Americans are currently losing a proxy war in Ukraine for example. I hope they don't unfortunately start an unwinnable war on the Far Eastern straits of China!

Yes this is exactly how I see it as well. We see the negative things as a way of teaching ourselves and counterbalancing ourselves. There are competence people that say winning doesn’t mean much, it’s your losses that will force you to improve, which is why strong players seek out other strong players… to challenge themselves and get better. Also, negative things have a habit of having more impact on your life than positive ones: You drive to work successfully… you get to do a day of work and get paid. You drive to work unsuccessfully, this means your car broke down or was in an accident, or at the very least you lose a days wage. If you are living check to check, that days wage could be the difference between paying rent or not whereas still getting paid just means that you are still getting by. So there are lots of reasons for negativity bias.

People get comfortable and stop trying to challenge themselves to improve. Learning is a lifelong process and being open to new ideas is the best way to learn new things. Our Creator made each of us with various strengths and weaknesses. Not everyone will be a rocket scientist or an Albert Einstein but we are all supposed to work together for the improvement of all lives here. Too many people are too self centered to understand that we all do better when everyone prospers.

Continued evolution is what has been lacking in humanity of late. Talk of "revolution" is folly. None have been adequate enough to counteract the ills of humanity. Talk of a "reset" because of the pandemic and global warming is also folly, as no previous state of our existence has ever been adequate. humanity is due reparations for humanity’s historic inhumanity to itself. A fair/just global economic system would be reparations for the world. In the 90's former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and former U.S. President George H.W. Bush proposed the nations of the world give themselves a 'peace dividend' by drastically cutting their military spending and using the funds to help develop their people and countries. This was of course rejected, but the idea is still the sensible and right thing to do. I have been saying this is what is needed by the U.S. on the domestic level at the least. We don't need other countries' cooperation to do this domestically. The level of violence and crime in general is costly. To rebuild from the increasing destruction of storms and other natural disasters and rebuild the infrastructure is costly enough. That was even before the pandemic. We surely need it now. I don't get the selective idealism of Democrats and the Left in general in the U.S.. We only appeal to the government with idealism and not the people themselves. We don't seem to ask anything of them other than to vote and significant numbers of people eligible to vote - don't. There is a needed void of constructive leadership in the world today and Africa is most in need of the fruits that a constructive world leadership could offer. They should fill this obvious void, as they have the most to gain.

It applies to all humans, but inevitably the result of all of us becoming better will be that more Africans rise to positions of influence. I am interested in Africa because I want a world where no one is able to dominate anyone else, and I think a world like this is only possible if my home country and other westerners allow Africa (and also South America) to have a leadership role.

Smartness is the ability to solve your own problems from the environment by yourself, it is not the ability to solve the European's problems. So instead of pandering to the European like a coward, observe and solve your own problems yourself, we must create our own curriculum of research and technology, logic is Universal, it is not European. So no matter how much we are educated in the west, we are still fundamentally dumb because we create nothing of our own for our own experiences. @@eastafrika728 That, my dear, is one of the things that gets me the most. Relying on the European interpretation of what a scholar is or academics is or what history is is bogus. I wonder about this research of Negative Bias. In my view, it is a learned behavior, we are not born negative ( or with original sin for that matter). We are taught that from our environment. If we have educating systems designed by Europeans that Negative Bias is imbedded. Even here in the US, we have to have a month dedicated to Black History in order for it to become part of the curriculum. That is why white folks are so ignorant about our history along with African Americans. Even world history classes are biased towards the advent of the European and their civilizations they built. You never hear about any other civilizations until you got to college and study archeology or anthropology. I have always believed in Africa being able to produce people who are smart enough to liberate, serve and lead its people. Imagine if someone gave this message to a child in under the age of 10 in Africa? It could lead to a chain reaction that is used as a catalyst for a tsunami of positivity, progress and change that can improve all aspects of African lives and balance out the negativity until it’s barely noticeable and all Africans live an happy life. Ideas do not move history, material conditions do. You can motivate and inspire all the people in Africa you want, but if some leaders get into power that disrupt the interests of America or any other powerful nation, those leaders will be removed from power and corrupt leaders put in their place. Through espionage, coups, and war, these things will effect countries and economies far more than ideas or extraordinary individuals.

The solution? Invest in your universities and industries. Domicile your discoveries and inventions in Africa. Too many African brains are uploading their ideas to western institutions. That's why you will always hear of good things always coming from there. And the effect is that young Africans growing up will not believe they have the knowledge within them, but must be abroad to learn it.

The beautiful topic of this video als produces the reason Beyonce' shocked soo many people when she 1st appeared until now. If it were not for her blk features, her beauty wld not be praised over time like it has. Many people blk, white, & other were mesmerized by her appearance. I have been around hundreds of blk people that had not finished civilized school but are smart enough to still understand and comprehend the most important things in society that have helped them still become prosperous in society. This also brings up the phrase "Street smarts vs Book Smart". Most of the real world requires a natural understanding of everyday living over false book teachings, along with problem solving and a physical knowledge of just knowing. In which alot of blk and mixed blk races can atleast show that they have. 👍😌

I guess the heart of this is the mistake of thinking a negative and a positive are equal .. I wasn't of the opinion they were anyhow .. would be interesting to understand this further .. would imagine , as anyone wanting to further themselves and develope , negative comments can be of greater value as they provide genuine opportunities for progression where as a positive comment could be thought to leave no room for movement.. One shines on a way, the other shines on you

@siriuslyspeaking9720

Focusing on the negative in itself is not a bad thing. Problems do require attention. It is counter-productive to ignore problems and thus allow them to become bigger problems. I like to focus on practicality rather than academic formulars' or theories, having only a high school education. I think Black-Americans and Americans in general do ourselves a disservice, when we don't consider that a White child will likely consciously or subconsciously develop a sense of superiority and entitlement after recognizing the disparity of power between White people and Black people and other people of color. The reverse would be true for a Black child. This would explain the sense of privilege/entitlement that many Black people complain about White people having. It may also partly explain why so many Black youth are not achieving in school and falling into a life of criminality. Maybe subconsciously they feel they can't cut it in society, and so why even try? We made the most progress when the phrase "we have to be twice as good to get ahead" was common among us. We didn't like it and saw it as unfair, but we accepted it for the reality it was and took it into consideration. That attitude doesn't exist today as widespread as it used to be. Us older generations have failed to pass the crucial knowledge and understanding down to subsequent generations. We did this at the worst of times - when technology was changing society as a whole dramatically. Parents today have to compete with not just their children's friends and peers for their influence, but with the entire world now, with cell phones and the internet available to them 24/7. Africans had better be careful with letting modernity erode their traditions and culture in general. Yes, use technology and adopt the best of what modernity and other cultures have to offer, but be mindful of the power of youth/adolescent/consumer pop-culture. Hip-Hop is celebrating its 50th anniversary and is saying it "changed the world', if it did how could it not have changed the communities it came out of and the lives of the people who still live in them? Don't believe the hype. Hip-Hop hijacked Black culture and may hijack yours also. Don't shun Black-Americans, get to know us. We are as diverse as the continent of Africa is. There is no one way we all are. There is no "Black culture" anymore, if there ever was. We are just a group of loosely affiliated sub-cultures. We are divided by beliefs, ideologies, philosophies, values, and lifestyles. You can learn from our mistakes even if we haven't or never do.

It's more than negativity bias at play here. Africans are almost exclusively viewed through a negative lens while at the same time Europeans are viewed through a positive lens. It's learned group bias...and we all suffer from it because we have all been socialized within it. Given that it doesn't matter how many hyper beautiful tall and intelligent Africans there are, the world will still instinctively look right past their existence in favor of their bias

Neil really needs to stick to astrophysics. The two flaws in what he is saying are that the groups that left Africa interbred with other hominid species which added new genetics and they had to adapt to new environments and conditions which forced the evolution of traits which best suited the new conditions. There is a lot of genetic diversity within Africa, but they are also missing a lot of genetics available to groups that left. Still, a lot of what he is suggesting is basically correct, it's just that his argument is flawed because it is so narrow minded. His argument was at the level of a middle schooler, not a renowned professor, but that's what happens when he talkes about things outside of his area. The only thing African countries need in order to prosper now is for the education level to increase to the point they stop voting for incredibly corrupt governments.

The thing is. It's all environmental really. You become your surroundings. In warm, sunny environments you don't need to reserve body heat and dark skin is superior. It's warm around the yer, so you don't need to plan very far ahead or actually even innovative solutions. If you live in the garden of Eden, what's the pressure to evolve? The Norther you go, the harder it is to keep warm and find food in the winter. You need paler skin, shorter limbs and the ability to organize, plan ahead and find solutions, because it's more complex existence.
