Check out the movie “The Creator” I know it’s not technically a black creator movie but the lead did an amazing job and no race issues. The lead character is well developed, from betrayal, to changing his beliefs to redemption. Everyone can relate to the lead character. Best movie of 2023 IMO

A black character should be like Blade. He is black, but his character is not centred upon him being black. Black characters who aren't just black tend to be the best black characters.

Exactly! It part of the reason why I like characters like Lando, his character has nothing to do with being black, and is just enjoyable by everyone. Or Ezran and king Haro from the dragon prince,

Yes. Instead of Blackness being the point, it is simply another factor in line with their other traits. But sometimes, writers will erase a Black character’s “Black identity “ almost like Black Barbie or Ken. The Black dolls from when I was a kid were just white dolls painted Black. The male dolls had white man’s haircut and all. But, to them, it’s still diverse.

I love the way you put the problem into that phrase: black people can't have escapism. I've read several people crying about how folks just don't get the irony of the title, but the reality is exactly what you say. Black Americans can't have a kickback, lose yourself movie without being constantly reminded of the struggle. And I love some of those movies, I just don't think anyone wants constant reminders of it, especially in a fantasy movie...

I'm from Northern Ireland and for a long time I was an aspiring Sci-Fi novelist. I had an agent and my work was getting sent to publishers. But as soon as they found out I was Irish they just couldn't get their head around why I wasn't writing about the Troubles or Institutional abuse.

I think that is what makes a movie like "Blade" so good. You never cared that Blade was black only that he was a kick ass vampire hunter. Didn't hurt that blade and nbushe right were the only two black people in the whole movie. That goes along way to making you forget that the lead character is black. Nobody considers Lethal Weapon(Danny Glover was given top billing over Mel Gibson because Danny was a bigger name at the time)or Beverly Hills cops to be black movies even with black leads because they're literally the only black people in the movie. Same with spawn. His wife and friend/antagonist have maybe combined 20 minutes of screen time. So all these "black superhero movies " that allegedly came out before black panther aren't really black superhero movies. They're just movies where the leads are black. Black panther is the first black superhero movie by a major studio not including meteor man and blank man who were largely self funded.

I loved the Cosby Show. Even though my family was poor I related to a simple family with two parents that were loving, had less drama and wholesome. The type of things common in black drama’s wasn’t the life I had. If my family was wealthy like the Huxtable’s, it would have been exactly like theirs. My parents probably wouldn’t have homeschooled us but have taken us to a private Christian school instead. If my parents decided to homeschool us as a wealthy black family it would have been interesting to see what kind of stay at home mom my mom would have been like. And they were a family of 4 sisters and one brother just like my family. Despite what Cosby did, I’m grateful for that show. Despite some black people seeing the show as a non relatable black show, for my family and other families alike, it was a normal black family. I didn’t know any other life.

Friend, fantastic video! As a non-American (i am Nigerian) your points and sentiments are something i have always felt. It's not that media featuring black characters can't use slavery or race as a theme/topic/narrative but it should not be the ONLY thing and should be done right with nuance and to enhance characters and story. I grew up in Nigeria in the 2000s and i remember seeing so many shows, movies, and other media with great black characters and representation that was devoid of any black victimhood, slavery stories or toxic identity politics. I remember watching Bruce Timm's Justice League cartoon and loving John Stewart for this reason. I also remember Hey Arnold and Gerald being a great character all his own. I really don't understand what happened that caused this sudden shift from great storytelling and good diverse representation to the current glorified tokenism and insulting stories and characterization black characters are given 😔 why? Again, thanks for making this video. Hexk! Here in Nigeria and much of Africa, slavery barely regusters as a topic in much of our escapist media despite the long history of it here. Black people just want to enjoy escapist media the same as others.

That's why damn near every black story always has to be about the struggle rather than any positives that could come after that struggle period if black people banded together and made shit happen. Go check out The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard (watch a lets play - the gameplay is terrible but the story is a masterpiece). IMO that has some elements of black escapism done right. The game's writer, Michael Kirkbride: "...when I started writing Redguard I really thought about how unique the black people of Tamriel were: they came in and kicked ass and slaughtered the indigenes while doing so. They invaded. It was the first time I had encountered the idea of 'black imperialism'...and it struck me big time, as something 1) new, 2) potentially dangerous if taken as commentary, and 3) potentially rad if taken as commentary. Who knows. AVault did say it had a story worthy of being on stage, and Michael Mack (Cyrus) once thanked me for giving him words that 'Black folks don't get to say' (referring to Cyrus' speech and the reversal of Son to the Father)... which broke my heart and made me puff my chest all at the same time."

I was a serious movie buff. And I mean I was obsessed. Couldn't get enough. But two things murdered movies for me. First, the preaching. Here I am, trying to escape into a world that's dealing with an alien invasion, and I've got to endure a lecture about climate change and try to block out a feminist side quest. When I watch a movie, I'm trying to forget the real world for a couple of hours, not be beaten over the head with reality. And second, the race swapping. I'm not butthurt over the switch up because the character doesn't look like they used to, I'm pissed that Hollywood has so little creativity that they can't seem to come up with an original character to save their lives. Race swapping is so lazy that it's insulting to the audience. Same for gender swapping. "Put a chick in it and make her lame." Just LAZY. I guess there's a third reason. I crave new characters with flaws and a character arc with a real struggle. I am so sick and tired of "Mary Sues." Let them be afraid, have to overcome selfishness and fear, and rise to the occasion. This is a winning formula for a reason, people.

Interesting points! I often found the "token" black character to be more of a mockery of black people, but I'm also white, which might make me more curious about the experience that black Americans may have. I often think that there should be a story/motive behind every character, but in a world with minority groups, that will probably also add to the white normative. It seems like white Europeans are in the sweet spot, where we can make fun with culture and add flavour to a character without having to retell the story of Napoleon or WW2.

The "Magical Negro" is not just another term for the "Token" black character. The Magical Negro is a film casting and writing of a black person in a movie that exercises freedoms of speech and actions contrary to how they were treated in the period set in the film, and sometines in the times of shooting the film itself. The definitive magical negro is Hattie McDaniel, who was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in Gone With The Wind, but was not allowed to sit in the front with the other nominees and guests and sat backstage, collected her award backstage. From there, movies like Driving Miss Daisy, Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves, The Green Mile (an actual magical negro), Django Unchained and In The Heat Of The Night depict black people exuding confidence and authority over white people in extremely unrealistic situations.

A good story would have me walking in green people shoes. Tha is effective storytelling. I took friends from around the way to see G-1 EVERYONE loved it. We had nothing in common past the human story. We didn't look like them we weren't from that time period, we damn sure didn't speak the language and STILL we connected. Great storytelling is severely lacking. All bells and whistles and ZERO substance is the Hellyweird mantra. 1/4 of the audience can sympathize and Hellyweird applauds at the signaling of "virtue." I feel like writers used to be better at writing, progressive stories back in the 2000s and the 2010s. A good example would be John Stewart from the justice league. He was a large black guy who was the green lantern and nobody drew attention to it, or talked about it in a weird way. He was just the cool guy on the team. He had his episodes and he had his backstory development, but he was just like every other character in the justice league. I would say cyborg from teen Titans also fits that pretty well. You never saw an episode where cyborg goes into a bad neighborhood and fights, crack dealers. he was just a normal black superhero that people just accepted as a matter, of course. I think we need to go back to that.

I grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation. As a preteen white girl, I connected most to Geordi La Forge; decades later, he's still one of my favorite fictional characters. They almost never touched on race in that show - yes, some allegorical stories using alien species as stand-ins - but overall, it was a bunch of people who liked and respected each other, having adventures, and it was amazing. That's what I want more of in entertainment.

There was a Bojack Horseman episode where a woman was assulted by a man on set (not spoilers on who), the man tries to come clean in an interview but the woman stops him saying this: "Yes, you physically asaulted me and if there was any justice in this world you'd be in jail. But my carreer is finally taking off after so many years in this business and I don't want your guilt to ruin that. I don't want your name to be the first thing that comes to everyone's mind when they hear mine, I don't want your crime to be the most important thing about me." This is why it feels Hollywood only pities black people, it doesn't actually admire them.

If the movie was a satirical take or parodied the Magical Negro trope, it could have been interesting. Similar to that Key & Peele sketch.
