Bro, you are reading my mind. Just yesterday I was on the fence of ordering Black mist filter but decided to do some research so this review came in very handy! The only real downside of using the filter is that the look is baked in, you can't remove it afterward. And the glow trick is pretty useful because you can always remove it if you don't like it.
@brightboxawesome2702 Жыл бұрын
you'll get a more consistent look by applying the gaussian technique pre-grade (just like a filter is baked pre grade) rather than at the end. The grade would only amplify the effects. Also, switch try luminosity rather than just screen. i prefer luminosity and I just reduce opacity or use the key feature.

Will give this a shot if I end up using that method at some point 😁

Just like you, I also like to create as much of the final look as possible while shooting. It saves time when editing and gives you a much more coherent look over multiple scenes.

Absolutely! If you have to fix it in post it probably means something needed fixing way earlier in the process 😁

Love this! It's a great topic to discuss. I prefer getting as much done in-camera as well. You're definitely right about meeting expectations with clients!
@georgekamenov_ Жыл бұрын
Yeah, getting it right in camera just saves so much time. On the topic of clients, I've had to edit footage before where the DP had a 1/4 mist filter on and I got asked if I could "do anything about the look" I was like, "Yeah, I can go out there and shoot it all over again, but that's about the best I can offer" 😂

This is superb tips! At least for non professional film maker like me. I have a question, instead of Screen, wouldn't Linear Dodge closer to the misty effect?
@georgekamenov_ Жыл бұрын
I feel like it kind of depends. There are a few blending modes that might end up working well. In some cases linear dodge could be better, yeah.

My question is, if we have a promist filter, in what cases do we use it? or do we have it forever in the lens?
@georgekamenov_Ай бұрын
@@nicolaslezas7610 It's a creative preference thing. There's no rules about when to use it and when to not. If you want to bloom the highlights, soften skin tones and get slightly less contrast, it can help with that. But you're pretty much free to use it whenever you think it looks good. That said, if you're filming something for a client and they don't want any of the promist effects, you can take it off the lens, which is what I sometimes do.

Why not try the mist effect in the vmur panel. It is especially designed to reproduce a mistfilter without the glow. As someone who is also meddling with vfx, i must say that it is not complicated to find better ways to do this in post. The concept is called frequency separation. The mist effect in resolve does nice extremely nicely plus we still get to choose if we want to have the glow or not.

You can't compare your idea of how to build it in Resolve to the actual filter. The advantage is like any camera setting - it is really difficult to scrutinize while shooting and using the filter - you are baking it in. Grading out diffusion is next to impossible, so you shoot it with the filter and your client tells you they don't like it, there is no real fix for it. I was able to match pretty closely to a promist filter in the past using the blur tool and but not evenly blurred by setting the radius at R- 0.47 G -0.49 B- 0.46 with a combination of Using the Glow OFX I had a near perfect match. I did the look by downloading the ProMist before and After and grading on the Before ( no proMist ) and using the After ( with Promist ) using the split wipe - I had them both looking as the ProMist was applied. And it worked on anything that was exposed and lit properly, without shot to shot modification. The set up was on one node -so apply it from a still - took seconds.

Yeah, this video was more meant as a showcase of how to get the "softer look blooming highlights" effect. But the physical filter is always going to look different, even when you manage to get it looking almost the exact same with post effects.
@ralphlumbres4 ай бұрын
Have you tried the halation effect in resolve? How does it compare?
@georgekamenov_4 ай бұрын
@@ralphlumbres I have yes but halation is a different effect all together. It's that slight red glow around the highlights in an image where the mist filter and effects I used in this video create "bloom". So it's hard to compare them as they do different things 😁
@ralphlumbres4 ай бұрын
@@georgekamenov_ yeah, but you can turn down the saturation and I believe it becomes similar to bloom, or not really?

Pretty sure every youtuber puts a pro-mist filter on now and they all look like clay. It will most definitely go out of fashion soon. Also, you can get a lot closer to your filter by messing with your contrast more.

p.s. not hating on your channel, I have the bell clicked, but I do despise the current trend in every talking-head filmmaker having this weird playdough color-grade. Surely Im not the only one who notices it
@georgekamenov_ Жыл бұрын
Maybe you're right. It could go out of fashion but I still genuinely prefer the way a 1/8 filter makes the image look compared to the super digitally sharp 4k that most cameras spit out. That said, I do agree that the stronger filters like the 1/4 and 1/2 and so on are a bit much, though that's kind of why nowadays there's a variety of other diffusion filters that do slightly different things. Like with most things in the creative world, it's a personal preference thing, and that's completely normal and okay 😁
@nonyab32377 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure smooth glowing images have been the preferred style forever, literally, because they are more beautiful. Of course, certain situations demand a more gritty and realistic look, but there will always be a demand for the look that black mist filters produce.
