The Parable duology was such an incredible journey in many different ways. Two books as recs are: 'The Summer We Got Free' by Mia McKenzie and 'Jam on the Vine' by LaShonda Katrice Barnett. They are two of the best books I've ever read and have very strong LGBT representation. 'The Summer We Got Free' is about a black family living within a community that is against them, especially the local black pastor. One day a young black lady turns up on their doorstep and her arrival shakes up the household and from there we get to know the family, and why they are such outcasts. 'Jam on the Vine' is about the first ever women-run newspaper in the US. Ivoe is the main protagonist and you see her journey from a very tough childhood, thru her schooling and on to her journey to get the newspaper up and running. Such a good, good story.

@@LEFTONREAD The other day I came across a book by chance. Now I haven't read it but it won the Lambda award for Best Debut Fiction in 2015, yet only has 28 ratings and 16 reviews on goodreads. The Lambda's are the big awards for LGBTQI+ books and authors, so amazes me so little have read it. The book is 'A Love Like Blood' by Victor Yates.

HERE COMES THE SUN was one of the best recommendations I've ever gotten. Dennis-Benn's building of character in it is phenomenal. I hadn't gotten to PATSY yet, but after hearing you speak of it so highly, I'll definitely be moving it further up on my TBR!

thank you for your video! i got a bunch of books to my radar, hopefully i get to them soon. i've just finished Real Life by Brandon Taylor and it was incredible, one of the best books i've read this year. the writing is to die for.

The Earthseed books (Parable of the Sower) is so good! I remember when I read them last year and I was just SHOCKED by how relevant and real it was. Especially when a character was using MAGA as a slogan... I died inside a bit. So prophetic, Octavia Butler was so insightful. And Danez Smith. 🖤🖤🖤 My favorites from that collection were dear white america and dinosaurs in the hood. I found An Unkindness of Ghosts to be a difficult read in a lot of ways, but I think Rivers Solomon could be on the way to revolutionizing what science fiction can and should be. They’re incredible, I really need to check out The Deep.

Hi Jourdan! Im glad you mentioned James Baldwin. I hate how he’s always looked over like Malcolm and Garvey. James Balwin has always represented the most oppressed community even when he was a preacher before he started writing. He has always stood his ground. Kept that Blackness level at a solid 9.0 on em! (Just finished Finkelstein Five) lol. Im gonna add Stars and the Blackness between them to the TBR! Are you guys gonna bring the podcast back? Its so dope when you guys let your thoughts out without worrying about time constraints etc. Love!

Whew! The first story is the hardest one [Friday Black], promise it gets less intense from there! But I also miss our talks/ lengths of time! I think our last one took a lot out of Duane so he’s taking a break until a topic/ book really strikes his interest. Hopefully soon 🤞🏾
