Ozzy FTW. The Black Sabbath album was recorded like a live session, they all just played it together in a room at the studio with it recording. It was the first time in studio and they didn't know thats not the only way to do it.

I put this in another comment, but I really think that's why those earlier albums from them are so interesting. I love that those albums are kinda weird and raw. Once "heavy metal" became an actual genre, it got a lot less interesting, but this? It's fascinating. Can you band your head to it? Yep. Could you get stoned and just sway around? Yep. It's all over the place.

Thx for sharing, I like the photos - one of Black Sabbath and one with people dressed like Black Sabbath, its the first time I hear the Dio version and in a concert I'm sure I would appreciated his theatrical version.....but Dio is taking it to far, like his LP covers vs. the original BS covers

My son and I have a running gun battle on if Black Sabbath is still considered Black Sabbath when Dio took the reigns and who is the better singer. I think you have a great comparison and from my pov Ozzy provides a more grounded vocal performance where Dio is powerful and has a wider vocal range. That being said, my point is that Black Sabbath is still Black Sabbath regardless of whether Ozzy or Dio is singing (only comparing these two). My son says it isn't Black Sabbath when Dio is singing and there is only Ozzy 😂😂😂 Anyway, great comparison on a great song and i like both version performed by ...Black Sabbath🤘🤘🤘😜

I watched most of the series Lucifer and the original fits that show better, so I’d pick that. It somehow shows the “humanity” of the fallen one more. More longing.

That's kind pretty much the same thing I landed on. Ozzy's version feels more human and more grounded; whereas, Dio's voice is so damn strong that his feel like a true deity.

Especially for the inclusion of Geezer's Bass solo🥰 I agree totally - Ozzy shows the human side, the vulnerability and the melancholy of the Fallen Angel falling again by falling in love. Dio is a god coming on to you with all his power. I couldn't name this difference until you said it < but it was obvious all of the time. This is the same Devil who sings "Voodoo". And as far as I know he wasn't to keen to sing the old material at all when they recorded this Live-Version - it was a conscious decision to do it as different as he could... BUT: The main difference is that the band now knows what they are doing > being a Heavy Metal Band. At the time they recorded the album they didn't know what they were creating - it was a Heavy blending of Blues, Rock, Jazz, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock - very in your face and guts - and the search for their identity continued from this 69 debut over Paranoid and then Masters of Reality. Listening to Tony Iommi's guitar on the Original takes you on a trip, if you open your mind to it. As I said, I love all Sabbath and I don't participate in the futile discussions who was better. Dio is the superior singer in every technical way, but Ozzy touches your heart because he offers you his own - his body and soul > I LOVE BOTH, DIO AND OZZY. Yeah that Geezer solo is just awesome. It's so funky and psychedelic. And I think the differences between Ozzy and Dio are interesting because Dio is objectively a better technical singer. But you're totally right in that Ozzy has the ability to touch you with his voice in a way that Dio sometimes doesn't. "At the time they recorded the album they didn't know what they were creating" Honestly, I think that's why those earlier albums are so fascinating. Once "heavy metal" became codified, all those psychedelic, funk, jazz elements went away, and we were left with just fast, distorted instrumentation. I love the fact that those early albums are weird and all over the place.
