At about 28:35 and ending 28:46 you can hear a snippet of Deeep Purple's "Wring That Neck". DP traded WTN for the rights to Its a Beauitiful Day's song /riff "Bombay Calling" which DP used to write "Child in Time". That was unexpected.

@@randallbrooks5787 Not 'Heaven and Hell' but I replied to the post about if they ever did a full version of 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath'. They did it w. Tony Martin in 1994 and a few times in 1995, and then again during some of the Ozzy-reunion years, but it a lower key due to Ozzy's voice not being what it used to. Kind of like 'Supernaut'. They never played the full thing apart from in 1974 I think, w a drum solo in the middle. They did it w. Ian Gillan in 1983, but it was a shortened version. Tony also used to play the riff during the 'Seventh Star' tour, before 'Paranoid'. Either 'Supernaut' or the 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' riff. Oh... I almost forgot they did it in full w. Rob Halford in 1992 at the first of the two Costa Mesa gigs.

don't say anything about personality or about what sabbath singers did on stage, they are all different but theres a fact his voice is amazing!! he could do all songs with no problem adding his style, remember he has to fill big shoes (gillan-dio-hughes-ozzy). fantastic but he left and as a composer nothing has been relevant so i doubt if his songwriting skills would have worked. tony martin survived because he is a great composer.

@@sds4life17 .... I always appreciated Martin's singing and even his writing abilities. But his stage presence was always a little lacking. And the weird mullet never did him any favors....even when long hair meant everything in metal. I have the Deluxe Editions of Sabbaths mid 80s stuff... Eternal Idol features a whole disc of Ray's version of the album. Which is really good. Martin came in and replaced those vocals note for note after Ray jumped ship. Also the Seventh Star Deluxe Edition has a 2nd disc of live material featuring Ray, after Glen Hughes had been let go, while they were in the midst of a tour. Ray sounds good there too...considering he had just come in as mid tour replacement. Ray was a partier though... he never seemed to be able to buckle down and solidly commit to working. He even kept partying and being sexually active after her knew he had AIDS. I always found that a bit unforgivable. No telling how many women he spread the disease to...at that time it was pretty much a death sentence.

@@i_am_the_void There were many situations in which Gillen was sounding too strident and half-toning the notes, his technique was never perfect like Dio's, watch Ronnie's performances with Black Sabbath in Ottawa 1982, in Toronto 1982 and with his solo band in Manchester in 1983, Gillen has a simpler singing style and without the variation of melodic designs and that fabulous spectrum of vocal color effects that Dio had through intonation manipulation (Dio was always a master in vocal manipulation), he never had much discipline in the high notes and many times, even though he had an excellent technique, good control of his natural treble and great harmonic resonance in his live performances, in some cases he sounded too strident or with his voice even squeezed at times on very high notes far from the open throat singing and highly controlled free notes with very open vowels in the upper fifth octave as Ronnie had, Gillen could hardly belt notes above B4 with an extremely full-bodied, balanced vibrato with the same naturalness as Dio, he did not had perfect muscular control of the vocal mechanism and just like an operatic rock voice like Ronnie had, Dio could to execute those harmonic throat distortions with perfect control and without any muscular tension and effort, Dio is considered an absolutely virtuoso singer by many singing experts that I have access to (as I have in-depth knowledge of vocal anatomy and physiology, and know many great professionals in the field and have also partly studied the vocal material of many rock/metal singers); Gillen in my opinion was one of the best rock singers but at the same time he was underrated as a singer but he was not an extremely virtuoso singer in terms of technical ability and consistency in live performances like Ronnie James Dio; Just study deeply the Anatomy of the muscular structure of the vocal mechanism of both singers and I am sure that any specialist with formal knowledge of musical theory could reach the same conclusions.
@luamoliveira3467
@luamoliveira3467 5 ай бұрын
It's blasphemous to want to place Gillen above an extremely virtuoso singer with a much greater muscular command of the mechanism like Ronnie James Dio, Gillen never had discipline in the high notes and he had a certain difficulty in keeping his voice in the lower register, he has excellent technique, good control of his natural treble and a great harmonic resonance but without great melodic variation, and compared to Dio, he never had the same consistency and a range of vocal tools with a fabulous spectrum of varied vocal color effects as Ronnie, in fact Gillen and Tony Martin maintained their identities vocals but clearly followed the geography of the melodic scheme that was traced by Dio in the band, he simply influenced himself and copied part of Ronnie's standard singing style just like Tony, that is, he didn' t come close to comparing himself to Dio in times of technical virtuosity and general vocal ability.

Glad he didn't stay long. Good singer but I feel he wasn't a good fit

Great singer - just bad for Sabbath. Sure some songs are good but others like Symptom of the Universe just don’t fit him at all

I don't like Ray Gillen in Sabbath. Don't like his vocal style actually.

Sorry to disagree, but he was incredible. He could sing every era of Sabbath in an amazing style, with a special touch and breathing a new life into many of the songs
