My Mom was a young girl living in London when the war began. She was evacuated to live with strangers in the countryside which she hated, but returned after a while. As a lad I played with toy soldiers and tanks and aircraft and loved watching films about WWII, and one day something must have touched a nerve because she told me how completely terrifying it all was. Walking through London and hearing the sirens wailing, the sound of bombs, how she was given a gas mask, how one day the back of her house was blown in, how V1 missiles would drone overhead before suddenly going silent then exploding moments later. The fear never really left her.

For me, your pausing and genuine reaction is the best part of the video. Nothing like seeing and listening to your first time experience. It is a source of joy for me knowing that the gift of music has a positive effect upon listening. Keep up the great work! 👍

Nice reaction, man. I'm glad that you do not know about it, but the horns you heard are the air raid horns. The drummer is legendary Bill Ward. Greetings from Croatia!

You just won yourself a new fan and my deep respect. Ive been watching War Pigs reaction videos for almost years snd Ive seen reactors get all wrapped up in that video and totally miss the impact of the song. Drives me crazy that they put that video in there. Thank you!

You’re damn right. Reactors trying to glean meaning from the video drives me nuts. So glad Polo upfront knew it was fan-made and was already so into the music he admitted he was not paying attention to the images. 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼

Great video! I'm always impressed that Sabbath recorded this album in practically one studio day. The precision of all the transitions is amazing. No cuts or editing, just straight live music in studio. Legendary

I saw them at Madison Square Garden back in December 1976!! Ted Nugent (aka the Motor City Mad Man) opened. What a night !!! #blacksabbath #warpigs #msg #1976

An important context for the Air Raid Sirens sounds at the beginning is that they were an ominous warning of impending horror. These were the signal to gather your family and try to get to relative safety before the bombing began. The true horror had passed by the time I was young but the sirens still sounded once a month and we hid under our desks as part of the drill when the sirens sounded.

This was pretty much the world's introduction to heavy metal, a genre that didn't exist before this. Many minds were blown away to be sure. Also, the song lyrics have many biblical references, and that cadence you referred to is that of a preacher. This most certainly is a sermon.

The members of the band were born in post war England. It influenced their lives in many ways. Birmingham was an especially dreary place in post war Britain. So that coupled with the Vietnam War which was raging at the time is the basis for the lyrics. And I’m sure you also noticed the grooves in the bass and drum parts. The UK had a huge love for Soul and R n B in the early sixties and it definitely had an influence on the rock bands that came up in the late 60’s and early 70’s. The Who, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath all had some funky hints in their early albums especially.

Excellent Reaction. Imagine being in high school during the turbulent times of the era. Then this hits the airwaves! We spent many an hour partying to this and a whole lot more.Bill Ward is a certified, bonafide, undenied masher. Two of my favorite Black sabbath songs are "The Wizard" and "Fairies Wear Boots" The Wizard features Ozzie playing harmonica. Fairies wear boots features a really cool recurring drum groove by Bill Ward. Enjoy! We have a million more paths for you to follow.

You commented on the difference in Ozzy's voice between this song and the live version of "Paranoid" you reacted to. The difference has got to be in the "liveness" of the "Paranoid" performance, versus a studio recording, rather than in any maturing of Ozzy's voice. The live version of "Paranoid" you watched was from 1970; the same year the album "paranoid" was released. "War Pigs" was on that same album.

Incredibly - their live performance in 1970 (you can find the video on KZbin) is better than most modernized re-mastered versions. It's incredibly raw and Bill Ward's impression of Animal (From the Muppet Show) is on 'effing point. Definitely worth a view.

"Iron Man" of Black Sabbath was my first introduction to them - quite some decades ago, though! Epic song for sure! Give it a try, if you want to. And a "fun" fact: Did you know that there is a song by Black Sabbath named "Black Sabbath" ... a very "dark" song or should i write: a very "black" song!? o_O
