Here's the story; In the late 60's Psychedelic Rock was the dominant genre of music. It was here where everything sprouted out into many other genres like Progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock and Heavy Metal. Early songs like The Beatles' Helter Skelter, Iron Butterfly's In A Gadda Da Vida, and Led Zeppelin's Dazed And Confused helped give the idea of a harder and heavier sound. It wasn't until a 1965 accident involving Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi where he lost the tips of some of his fingers in a metal sheet chopper. This accident made him wear melted ends and leather on his finger tips to play guitar. He didn't like the sound so he detuned his guitar and the sound became thicker and heavier. With Black Sabbath, he experimented with this new sound which was the key start of Heavy Metal. A few years later, bassist Geezer Butler had gotten into some influences of acultism. He awoke from a nightmare and saw a black figure at the end of his bed, staring at him. The next morning, he told lead vocalist Ozzy Osbourne about it. Ozzy was then inspired to write a song about it. That song was called Black Sabbath. Upon playing the song live after their usual Blues and Jazz music, they horrified their audiences. They heard as if it were real devil music. This gave the band the idea to combine horror themes with hard core heavy rock, and Heavy Metal was born. After releasing their self titled debut, critics panned the album as 'Not even music'. But that didn't stop rebellious teens fron finding them. Black Sabbath ultimately won over the underground scene and broke it through the limelight, and the rest is history.

The guitarist for Sabbath, Tony Iommi, lost the tips of his two fingers in an industrial accident. He crafted artificial finger tips and used them playing. He is an example that no one should ever give up on their dreams.

iJax Idk if it's true but I've heard his rubber finger tips are a pretty recent thing, starting in the 1980s or so. He use to down tune his guitar for live shows to reduce the tension in the strings. I also heard before Tony got his tips he would use banjo strings cuz they have less tension than guitar strings. Either way he's still an incredible guitar player.

That’s pretty awesome. Check out Django Reinhardt. He was in a Gypsy Jazz band with a legendary violinist named Stephane Grappeli. Django was injured in a fire and so his ring and pinkie fingers kinda fused together. So he played with his index and middle fingers and the dude straight TORE it up in jazz. Specifically check out J’attendrai. There’s a video of them with a little intro to each of the bandmates. Good stuff. For some fuckin FIRE Gypsy Jazz watch Tchavolo Swing (from the movie Latcho Drom).

This is pretty much true. He used to work in a factory, and his job was to press / mould certain metal parts. His 3 prominent finger tips were caught in a press and as a result were removed. According to iommi himself this occurred the day before he was due to sign for a label! A work colleague trying to break his despair played and showed him Django Reinhardt who fretted his guitar with 2 fingers as that is all the fingers he had. According to Tony himself he then melted plastic washing up fluid bottles to fit onto the stumps of his fingers and applied strips of leather for grip. As he played he realised he needed thicker strings x6 in order to play effectively, and to cope with the heavy strings on each peg, he had to tune down (a lot of Sabbath songs are down tuned to C #), hence creating somewhat accidentally, the greatest metal sound of all time. This accident, as well as his innate abilities, has made him become the Godfather of metal.

Love this song! The absolute madman Bill Ward on the drums, you should see the live version of this in Paris in 1970, he beats the shit outta the drums. I heard that people automatically labeled this song as satanic when it came out because they didn't want to accept the true message. Also, you paused right when I was about to air-drum at 3:47, haha :) great reaction and analysis as always

1970, Dude!!! Before Sabbath the hippie songs from the late 60s was about love and flowers and whatnot. Sabbath did songs that the youth actually could RELATE too. Everybody knew that the vietnam war was going on and Sabbath only stated the fact. Their music and lyrics were dark and frightening and captured reality. Music snobs and reviewers couldn't grasp them. And parents at the time were terrified. They were excellent musicians too. And they didn't gain proper recognition for that until latter days. Drummer Bill Ward has "swing" and an almost jazzy kind of approach. Every drum fill differ from the previous one. Please do more Sabbath. A proposition from me would be "Into the Void". But anything from their first 5-6 album is up for the game. Never had a band done so many flawless albums in a row like the sabs.

Black Sabbath started in Birmingham UK the birthplace of Ozzy Osbourne. Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple are also UK bands with their influence travelling over the pond. Some one mentioned NWOBHM in an earlier comment. This stands for "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" and includes bands such as Iron Maiden, Saxon, Judas Priest, Motorhead and Diamondhead. These bands are all worth a listen especially Iron Maiden.

War Pigs was published on Sept 18,1970 the exact day that Jimi Hendrix died 50 years ago now. It was also my 10th birthday I just turned 60 and still can't get enough of this metal rootzs. No one had anything close to this other than Hendrix but as I said he was gone on that day O,zy Osbourne is the lead singer for Black Sabbath until he went solo in the early 80s. Most people know him from his reality show The Osborne's. Iron Man is a Black Sabbath song with Ozzy on lead vocals. His solo career had great hits like Suicide Solution and /Crazy Train

Here's a list of songs before Black Sabbath first album, that helped shape and influenced the birth of Heavy Metal Kick out the jams (1969) by MC5 Summertime Blues the Blue Cheer version on their 1968 debut album but already written in 1967. some say this is where heavy metal truly took shape and seeing the insane drumming (you can see their live version here on youtube), it'd be hard to argue. You can say that the drummer invented headbanging. Helter Skelter (1968) by the Beatles IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA (1968) by Iron Butterfly Dazed and Confused and Communication breakdown form their 1969 debut album (though they already performed dazed and confused live during 1968) Old man going (1968) by The pretty things, originally written in 1967. Jimi Hendrix (God bless his memory), Either the Live rendition of the song Wild Things in 1967, The Star Spangled Banner live rendition at woodstock in 1969 or from his 1968 double album (Electric Ladyland), the song Voodoo Child (slight return). What would be Heavy Metal without Jimi? You can also add Sunshine of your love by Cream (1967) Also the term Heavy Metal was first used in the 1968 song Born to be Wild by the band Steppenwolf.

About war pigs. It was supposed to be the name of the album as well and yes it was to denounce the Vietnam war even though the group members admitted they didn't know a lot about it. The record company thought it would be too controversial and they ended up naming the album after the second song (paranoid) instead. That is why the album cover (where you see a guy coming out with a sword) makes more sense if the album was named War Pigs. About heavy metal. Black Sabbath didn't exactely "create" Heavy Metal, but they are one of the main influence to it. Their first album realeased earlier the same year (Black Sabbath) is widely considered to be the first Heavy Metal album even though in my opinion it is more heavy blues and their second album (this one with war pigs in it), is much more the blueprint of modern heavy metal. Some say that Led Zeppelin created Heavy Metal but the group has always denied being heavy metal. It's true they were more of a heavy blues band the way black sabbath first album was. For zeppelin it was more their appearance and live shows who were an influence to heavy metal. Look at all the "hair metal" bands of the late 70's and of the 80's *like whitesnake, Guns and roses, etc...) and you can see in their music, clothes, hair style etc... the very obvious influence of Led Zeppelin. Another group that "fathered" modern heavy metal is Deep Purple. Deep Purple in Rock, released also in 1970, is the foundation of speed metal and orchestra metal (heavy metal mixed with classical or orchestral music). With songs like Speed King (from the in Rock album), Fireball from their 1971 fireball album or Highway Star (from their 1972 metal classic Machine Head), the influence of Deep Purple on fast and very loud metal subgenre cannot be overstated. Black Sabbath is the undisputed influence for the heavier and darker spectrum of heavy metal. Doom metal, groove metal satanic metal etc.... when you think of heavy metal with dark overtones, omnious lyrics and heavy riffs, there is no shadow of a doubt that it has in some shape or form been influenced by black sabbath. Their 3rd album (Master of Reality) has songs like Children of the grave, a song which leaves no illusion on the originators of doom metal. All in all it's very difficult to pinpoint an exact begining to Heavy Metal, though usually the date of Friday the 13th of February 1970 (the release date of Black Sabbath's first album) is given. Heavy meatal was a genre wich came out of the blues infused psychedelic era of the late 60's. Groups like Cream or The Jimy Hendrix Experience had trmendous effects that helped Heavy Metal to develop. It's usually accepted that Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath are the "unholy" trinity of Heavy Metal. Each one in their own style (which are widely different from each other), helped put a corner stone in the Heavy Metal pyramid. Little will argue that among the three, Black Sabbath is the most proeminent and the one that had the biggest influence on the genre.

I don't know if Grand Funk did their Paranoid song before this War Pigs, but in Funk's Paranoid, they start off using sirens as well. Grand Funk is a band that blend r&b soul, funk, and hard rock together :D Groovy dance music with power! -Sabbath's drummer told a story of playing this song one of the first times they played America. All the Veterans in wheel chairs (that were draped with the US flag) stood up and were held up by their buddies in salute to the message in this song and the beating power of the music. An Anthem! Metal has its roots in standing against authority and speaking the truth of what goes on. The game played out of Evil versus Nature (Good) is always the theme just about. And so the images of satan are more like a display to tell people of this evil and what destruction is does for our world. An old story.... It's good to beware that there is evil to spot it and call it for what it is and build your world in love, truth. War Pigs reminds me of CCR Fortunate Son and Bob Seger's 2+2 ---Great lyrics in those songs as well They reference Blue Cheer and psychedelia/garage music from the 60s as another influence on metal and some other heavy bands in the stoner, doom sound. But Sabbath was the one who created the model in the subject matter talked about on such a powerful level that reaches to people. A lot of The 60s of ! raw power blues ! was creative and primitive right to the core of the soul. The innovations and improvisations were allowed, jam into something beautiful and human. Great reaction, man ;)

Hey from Australia! Love yr reactions m8. Same band as Iron Man and Paranoid and so many other great songs. Ozzy is the singer from Black Sabbath but he comes in a solo version as well, lol. Checkout Aussie band Midnight Oil's song "Short Memory" I think you will really vibe to it! Keep up the great vids! Cheers!!

Ozzy is the lead singer for BS, before he went solo. And yes , they did Iron Man (great song too). all of today's point to BS as their biggest influence.

This song shows you how metal got a bad reputation as devil music. (more so than regular rock and roll) People hear key words, devil, satan, burning bodies, etc... And they flip out. When usually, these words are used in a way to talk about issues, and ultimately has a positive message, or as metaphor, and there is a positive message in the song. They listen for the key words, but not the whole message being portrayed in the song.
