Israel Hands was a real pirate; the first mate of Blackbeard. In Treasure Island, there is also a character named Israel Hands (no relation to the real Israel Hands), who is one of Long John's Silver's more villainous pirates.

i still can't believe that out of everyone on the couch, the one whose opinions i have consistently agreed with the most have been pat's lmao. he's the only one of you guys that has seemed to understand flint from the beginning. flint's bossing people around and calling the shots because he's the fucking captain lmao. there's a reason why he always ends up back in the position of leader, it's because he's good at it. you guys are so willing to understand every other character on this show except for the main character whose reasoning has been presented to you multiple times on a sivler platter lmao. he laid out his entire motivation in season 1 when he said he will never roll over for the british he will never apologize to people who took everything from him and then called HIM the monster. it's been reiterated time and time again especially these last two seasons with their alliance with the slaves, it's bigger than the individual feelings of the crew. IT'S A GOD DAMN REVOLUTION AGAINST THE BRITISH EMPIRE. he shouldn't have to hold billy's hand to gain his respect in the middle of it all lmao he never had to do that with silver OR madi. billy just needs to stop being a bitch and look at the bigger picture instead of his own feelings. i do love this show's tendency to have these dumbass decisions come during the MOST inopportune times. the conversation between billy and flint during the storm on the side of the ship, dufresne and the crew turning on flint towards the end of s1 right before they were gonna shoot at those spanish ships, billy deciding to turn on the other side of the team in this ep. so many times i was like nOW???? WE'RE DOING THIS NOW???? COME ON!! dumbass men lol.

It's not about Billy being a dumbass. Flint has absolutely reasonable motives but this resentment has been festering since the beginning and the different natures in their personalities (with Billy being far more humanitarian while Flint's much more about the larger picture) brings them into conflict. It's a little silly to say that Billy's just being a bitch about it because it makes sense.

Billy was blinded by his hate and mistrust of Flint. I think that moment was the straw that finally broke the camel's back. We can't forget these men are pirates and not 'good' and Billy let his emotions get the better of him.

So, one of the things I personally love about this show is how I can be torn between perspectives of characters. Emotionally I am all on the side of Madi and Flint, but I also feel the same way about Max. Max has been trying for nearly the entire show to make Nassau a place that can function in civilization - a goal that was shared by Thomas Hamilton, Flint, Elenor, etc at one time or another. She sees the current governance and knows it isn't right, but also knows the oncoming onslaught of the pirates isn't the answer either. An interesting thing the co-creator of Black Sails said about Max on the Fathoms Deep podcast (highly recommend it btw): "Max is the only character who does not allow violence to be the only solution to a seemingly impossible situation." Chis is absolutely right in the discussion here too. I have thoughts about Elenor and Rodgers that I can't get into until later, but I don't think we are meant to view their relationship as being necessarily right or healthy. Back in season three, Elenor felt like Rodgers was the first person to see her for who she was - knowledge of what she was capable of - and to respect her for it. She felt like she could stand beside him. But in this season already we have seen that being the wife of Governor Woodes Rodgers is another matter than being an important informant/strategist.

Strong disagree. Max is an opportunist and she proved that from the very beginning trying to sell the Urca schedule, then she joined the side that was the most likely victor. Let's not paint her as some sort of noble character. Yea, she is a survivor but ultimately she's no better than a mercenary - which also fits since she did use to sell herself for money.

So many dumb comments here, that just cast aside good discussion for the sake of fanboying a lead of a show. We all know Flint made the right decision and he is the captain, but we can still empathize with Billy and understand the reasoning for his actions.

If Billy had been smarter he never would have disagreed with Flint at this point. He would have kept building up the legend of Long John Silver as Flint was leading them to victory. Billy never should have moved against Flint until he was either sure Silver was dead or Silver had been found. Otherwise the legend he has spent all this time building up will go to waste.

I'm tired of Flint as well, but I agree that they needed to withdraw from that plantation until they come up with a plan to take the other plantations simultaneously. Thanks to Billy and his impatience, that may never happen.

I agree with Billy (before he starts the fight with Flint). Moving quickly to the other estates was the better move. They went to that estate because they needed the people, now Flint's plan is let's just attack while severely outnumbered? Pretty dumb plan to anyone who isn't under Flint's spell

It's a difficult decision honestly. There was likely no way they could have hit all seven plantations before at least a few of them would get alerted to what's going on and then they would likely just kill most of the slaves, likely destroying the alliance. It's not like the plantations are next door neighbors. Not to mention they still had the militia to deal with. Billy had a point but he lost any respect when he ordered his men to fire.

That's a stupid idea, Jake. Flint isn't always right, but he's right in this instance. Hitting all the plantations at once is not feasible with the size of their crew unless they send only two guys to each plantation. And even then, it wouldn't be simultaneous. Also, as Flint said, it would destroy the trust they've built with the slave population of the island, and they *need* that trust or they're fucked. They should have backed off and come back later when they had a better plan, instead of just running around like idiots.
