Stork nesting behavior - THIS STORK IS KNOWN FOR CRUSHING IT'S CHICKS, STEPPING ON THEM OVER AND OVER. 100% INTENTIONAL. IT KNOWS WHAT IT IS DOING.

Compare this to Hawks for example who tuck their toes and talons when they are walking in the nest, so they don't pierce their young.

I don't know if storks have any conceptual understanding of what they're doing as parents. I suspect that for them it's just a series of instinctual reactions to specific cues, without any feeling of individual attachment or any understanding of the arc or goal of the process.

Well said. Storks are mindlessly driven by their instinct - the only exception is when their aggression comes out on their chicks.

It's generally how I see most animals. They have their code and commands written out and some follow it better than others. We have code in us too of course, but far less dominant the higher the intelligence is.

It's done in stork and crane nests in order to be able to get enough food and be able to raise chicks that are ready to migrate nonstop a short time after being able to fly and have the stamina to fly non stop to wherever (Africa?). It's a shame that the instinct to lay fewer eggs hasn't happened, as clutches of 4 or 5 are the norm as it would be better to lay 2 or 3. These chicks spend much more time as nestlings in order to build their muscles and stamina for that non stop migration.

And you are soooo very wrong about the bear analogy, you may experience fear but i would experience what it feels like to kill a bear. you got me kfd up to think I would fear a bear lol, please I wish one would. boom boom to the face is what that bear would get lol, I'm at the top of the food chain and 'aim' to keep it that way. The loving mother? In large Raptor nests, the smallest chick gets pecked to death, whilst this nest mate is being preyed upon, the mother bird will tear apart her chick and feed the others with it. Murder and cannibalism from the loving mother. They are not capable of love, or hate, their behavior is governed by instinct, and instinct alone. Instinct is what has gotten them here after millenia, thousands upon thousands of years.

This seems to be a common behavior in storks and cranes, like a switch has turned on and suddenly, instead of raising chicks you are killing them. In other species, chicks are a bit bigger, and I've seen a parent toss ALL the chicks out of the nest! It seems they know (instinctively) that chicks not being large enough are tossed out of 4 and 5 chick clutches, usually leaving only 2 or 3 chicks. These large birds spend a lot longer in order to fully develop their flight muscles and stamina for migration which happens shortly after they are in condition for the non stop flight. This seems to be part of the instinct to toss chicks out of the nest, after attacking smaller chicks, then tossing them out. This instinct somehow informs them that they can't get all of the chicks to an acceptable size in time for migration, usually leaving only 2 or 3 to stay (they better keep their fingers.... errr toes crossed. They do grow to an incredible size, and do stay in the nest a long time, making flights to develop their ability to migrate soon. This would work a lot better if they only laid 2 or 3 eggs.

Personally I disagree with the 100% rigid, no exceptions thing about not interfering with wildlife, even if they are doing something that seems evil. The whole "they do this for a reason" thing is only half true, and never in every single case. When we, as humans so chose to treat this sort of senseless violence in animals the way we do with other humans, it creates evolutionary pressure towards animals that behave more civilly, the way civilized humans do. Of course this can be over-done, to the point of causing problems if humans were suddenly removed from the picture, but only if it was done on a massive scale across the entire gene pool. Otherwise, we are just nudging the otherwise random evolution away from a few specific cruel behaviors. Its not something that should be always done or encouraged, but just not dogmatically _discouraged_ the way it is today. We cull animals for all sorts of reasons, except to help create a world with more socially cooperative animals who show less cruelty to one another. For example, any time it is decided that a population of animals must be culled to some degree, we should be selectively culling those who exhibit these sorts of behaviors for the benefit of the animals within that population who either don't do it at all, or do it through the most "ethical" means available to them.....even if it has some survivability cost to the overall population, natural evolution should, over time correct for that-as long as it isn't over-done. I hope I related that well enough. It's just a viewpoint I never hear mentioned or evaluated on any level.

its not your place to step in and "do something". ppl like you need to get that kind of thinking out of your head. there is no such thing as good or evil and it really is what these birds do they kill off the few younger ones and it seems to be working out for them for 100s or 1000s of years and numbers seem to not be overpopulated so unless its endangered leave nature the fk alone will ya and just enjoy it in all its glory
