Helbrecht also has a huge base, which means if you’re fighting in a tight space and he is base to base with the model you’re in melee with there’s more space around him to have models close enough to fight that unit as well

Idk if he still mentions this but I’ll say it here anyways: 1 unit of 5 sword brethren with Helbrecht. Take uphold for the entire army and then boost this unit with fervent acclamation for sustained/lethal hits with helbrechts ability going off on 5+ makes them into a massive blender

I picked up on that pretty early after the index dropped. I've gotten to play twice so far and the Hel-blender was MVP in the first game but got jumped by Golden Boys before they could fight in the second game. If you can get them in and go first they absolutely SLAP.

One thing I’ve been doing, is saving on the Command Points and just slapping an LT or Castellan with Bones onto the unit to get the Lethal Hits and a 5+ FNP.

A big issue I find with this strategy and using Uphold is that to use Fervent Acclamation it has to be the command phase. This unit typically wants to be in a transport, land raider or impulsor. So the turn you pop out you can't use that stratagem on them. Here's to hoping they allow LTs to be attached soon.

Important note: none of the black templars characters can lead Bladeguard veterans As for Sigismunds seal, I find it works great with a lieutenant, so you're getting both lethals and sustained hits on 5+

I’ve been looking at running a 10 man terminator blob and throwing Sigismund’s seal on a terminator captain with them. Pop the free strat for 2 vows, get 27 powerfists with 5+ sustained and lethal hits, hitting on 2s against oath target, ignoring negative modifiers, plus the captain and sgt power weapons. Seems to be a pretty terrifying block

I agree, I think the enhancements are actually pretty decent, you just have to play around them. My plan is a 10-man sword brethren squad with a character with the seal in a Land Raider. Pop out with the assault ramp, then use the extra vow strat to do sustained and critical hits on 5s with full rerolls with Oath.

Something worth noting for the Castellan, he loses an attack on the Master Crafter power weapon with 4 attacks, compared to the Primaris LT with 5.

A few details AT has missed: Primaris Crusader Initiates come eqiped with boltrifle and boltpistol and can swap out the rifle for a chainsword and heavy bolt pistol, leaving them with chainsword, heavy bolt pistol and boltpistol. The gladiator valiant's sponson multimeltas are reduced to strength 9 for the templars instead if strength 10 for the vanilla variant. Sword brethren did not only get the 11th model removed but also went up 10% in points per model, getting punished not for there performance on the table but for GWs sloppy quality controll and inability to fix things the right way.

I totally agree. It seems to me that GW changed the points cost before realising that it was actually originally correct for the amount of models. Instead of admitting their stupidity, they took away the extra model but kept the higher cost. I love the game, but it's a sad to see that the people making it are also the ones ruining it

Haven't played much this edition, but I've been doing 2 squads each consisting of 6 bladeguard, 1 lieutenant, and 1 captain for a total of 16 bodies in a land raider crusader. I called it the blade brigade, but we've started calling it the clown car. That said, it's been very effective at moving a lot of death right into the opponents line. I take sigismunds seal on one captain as 5+ meaning an auto wound, and an exploded hit has been rather spooky. It's been a lot of fun!

I'm pretty sure Bladeguard count as two bodies in a transport, and unless you have a Marshal and a Castellan in there with your squads you can't repeat characters, nor attach a Captain AND a Lieutenant to one unit together. If I'm talking outta my ass, lemme know. Not familiar with those specific units.

​@@LordCrate-du8zm you can put a LT/Castellan with a Captain/Marshal in the same unit. Sounds like it's two units of 6 with a character on each though. You can take 3 of each of those characters since they're not epic. BGV are tacticus infantry just like Sword Brethern so he's good.

Great video. I was just wondering when this was coming out. I do love the Righteous Crusader detachment as I think it brings a good flavour to the Templars. The Multi-melta option on the tanks is good in my opinion as it gives them a bit more of a punch especially on the Lancer that gets to re-roll one hit, one wound and one damage dice. One thing I am not keen on is the loss of the Chaplin abilities we had from 9th and I believe GW should have done more to add a bit back in on these. After all we don’t get Psyker units and I always viewed the Chaplins as the models we had to make our army unique in place of these.

So far, I've had a blast with my Templars this edition. We're still pretty tough with some very important melee buffs to make our dedicated melee buffs worth it. I'm still bringing a lot of shooting, but watching Helbrecht melt terminators with a stern stare really warms my heart.

for the sword brethren the unit ability also applies to the leader so you can get some very strong combos. I used it with a marshal with a master crafted power weapon in a game of 10th while using the finest hour ability to do 9 mortal wounds to a tervgion.

I think you’re underselling Sigismund’s seal. Throw it on a Lieutenant and take the ‘Accept Any Challenge’ vow and you’d have a melee unit with exploding hits AND autowounding on a 5+ to hit. Absolutely insane damage on sword brethren lead by a punchy character.

The relics being locked to vows is really annoying, but I think they'd be really good if they changed the second ability to activate on a unit by unit basis (so that you can activate a relic using the extra vow stratagem) That said I also really think accept any challenge is a sleeper vow. Get a big block of terminators w a captain w sigismunds seal to attack your oath target, giving them +1 to hit. With your sustained hits proccing on 5's you can afford to reroll anytbing that isn't a 5 since you'd be hitting on 2s w power fists. If you use the captains free strat to get extra AP in melee, all the better. I've had great results.

I really couldn’t figure out why you would pick Sword Brethren over a unit of Terminators, Termies have more reliable damage output, better shooting and a 4++ Also toughness 5 right ? Then it hit me, the sword brethren’s ability to choose extra damage or attacks also applies to the character leading the unit and opens up a whole world of pain ! Now I want at least 3 units of them, as 5 man squads and with a character in each such as helbrecht, Emperors champion or some other damage dealing beast. Having 10 or 12 attacks with damage 2 instead of 1 is huge!

Looking at Helbrecht's datasheet at 105pts and then seeing the (more expensive) Typhus' stats in comparison... man, my DG is so shafted for the next year or two at least. Glad to see that Templars are looking decent though, they're fun SM variants with cool lore and I'm glad the stats mostly reflect that!

So took a primaris captain with a sword brethren squad abhor the witch was active and I made the charge into a keeper of secrets proceeded to do 33 mortal wounds with my captain alone because of oaths of moment dev wounds and 4+ anti-psyker

Already did an awesome combo in a game. Marshal in a sword bro squad. This gives his sword damage 3. Pop his rites of war and you have insane damage potential. I killed a hive tyrant that had a 5+++ on in one shot. He charged in and the Marshal did 15 mortals. Didn't even need the sword bros damage.

While I was suprised to see primaris crusaders with 5 attacks on the chainsword, I interpreted this as a conscious choice to frame them as experts on this weapon (in line with the lore?). Might as well be wishful thinking. What seems like a mistake to me are the 3 attacks on the power weapon of the sword brother leading the squad (compared to sergeants leading regular space marine battleline units, with 4 attacks)

Can an enhancement's extra vow ability be used if that vow was activated by fervent acclimation? Was Planning on running Suffer not the unclean to live for whole army for lethal hits. The using Marshal with Sigismund's seal in conjunction with Fervent Acclimation to activate Accept any Challenge vow. That would give the attached unit Critical hits of 5+, lethal hits, and sustained hits. Pretty Wild. BUT rules as written the 5+ critical hit can only be activated if Accept Any Challenge is applied to the whole army, not just the unit. Am I correct to think the above setup would NOT be possible?

Black Templar Impulsors/Repulsors/Gladiators can take either the iron hail heavy stubber OR the multimelta; the MM isn’t an auto take. Regular Space Marine tanks Can ONLY take the heavy stubber.

Sigis seal is much better than you give it credit for. In that vow, with a lieutenant, you have exploding auto wounding 5s. It's massive.

10th edition armies that can advance and charge, charge reliably out of Strategic Reserves, or charge out of a transport after it moves, are the only good CC armies in 10th- that's the line. Everyone else should focus on ranged power, tricks, and mobility.

I would have to disagree a bit with the Sigismund's Seal as it combos with the stratagem Fervent Acclamation well. Selecting Accept Any Challenge and then triggering Suffer Not the Unclean on a unit with access to both allows everyone to get 5+ Lethal Hits and Sustained Hits. Or Accept with Abhor the Witch. Now the only question is will they FAQ to allow the bonuses of each vow be applied with Fervent for the Enhancements and Stratagems selected on that unit or not.

The strats have wording to the effect of "the vow that is active for your army" not what is effecting that unit, therefore you'd have to make sure the army wide vow is the one you want to trigger off the strat.

How many models do Helbrecht, and Grimaldis count as when it comes to being in a transport? I mean I figure Grimaldis counts as 4 because of his servitor retinue. But Helbrecht is on like a 60mm base.

RAW, i dont think you can tank wounds on Grimaldus's servitors ahead of his bodyguard can you? As they are on his datasheet, dont they get covered by the proviso that you cant allocate wounds to an attached character in a squad unless hit by precision weapons?

On the datasheet, grimaldus and the servitors have different Keywords. Servitors are not characters anymore. In the rules it is written that you are not allowed to allocate damage to a CHARACTER MODEL of an attached unit. So it works RAW. :)

Man, the one time I have to absolutely disagree with auspex tactics is on sigismunds seal. That upgrade, on a marshal leading a unit of 5 sword bros is devastating, especially since AAC is so damn good now. 20 pts is a steal to get them critting on 5's, and give that marshal 1 additional attack, combined with the sword bros ability to add in yet another attack (or +1 dmg) and then his inert ability to gain +3 attacks one fight phase per game and gain devastating wounds? Bad call on this one man.

Due to the missing keywords on the characters alone you would never take ANY of these above a vanilla primaris captain or Lt. The weaker loadouts dont help either. No clue why they are missing KEY TEXT on their sheets. Champ of the emperor, helbrecht, marshal and castellan all need additional keywords to compete. (Even then you would still take a regular primaris Lt. over the castellan or a regular captain over the marshal)

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who noticed this. I was so confused. Knowing others saw just how dumb the special characters MADE for the black templars are worse than primaris made me very sad. What's the point of having marshals and other characters if they are literally just worse? Really hope GW rectifies this.

I feel like you missed the obvious Primaris crusader squads can have 19 models armed with chainsworss. 1 with a power weapon. For them, that’s 5 attacks each with the chain sword and 4 with the power weapon Add in a capt with signsmands seal and have the accept any challange vow active. Plus using crusaders wrath for free That’s 95 chainsword attacks that crit on 5+ with substained hits and 4 power sword attacks that do likewise. All at AP -2 and -3 respectively Add in a leutient and you get lethal hits as well.

I sometimes like to chuckle that they are "anti-psyker", the way Grey Knights should be anti-Daemon, and Deathwatch anti-xenos, but maybe they don't deliver so much on that front? Nothing against them, and I think k they did decent for 10th, but it almost seems more likely, lore-wise, that they'd be expecting to battle Orks (xenos), again, and fight alongside the DW.😊 At least nothing in their write up prevents them from having allied psyker Inquisitors. They aren't necessarily great, so maybe people aren't chomping at the bit to squeeze Grayfax, Eisenhorn, or some nameless Inquisitor into their list, but at least it works. They do still seem decent; they actually have multiple detachments to choose from, and more than a single special character to field, who are even probably good to use. As deviant Astartes who feel like they can't work in a book with others, I think I'm actually rather happy that they might be superior, at least for now, to Blood Angels and Space Wolves. We'll see if that can last. 😊

I think the key difference is that they aren't "anti-psyker" the same way Grey Knights are anti-daemon and DW are anti-xenos. Those chapters are specially trained to hunt down their favoured foe. Templars absolutely abhor the witch, but it's just a psychological thing as opposed to devoting the whole chapter's training program to killing that foe. I think have an anti-psyker vow and relic are perfectly in-line with the way BT approaches anti-psyker.

In my opinion even anti-demon is a mistake, so is anti-tyranid. I understand the flavor, and it is fine in a narrative game, but it isn't exactly a good idea for the game. And anti-xenos would hit a lot of armies quite arbitrarily, becoming a balancing nightmare. I would personally suggest having these rules in a crusade supplement, for narrative campagins, with a small blurb explaining why and how and all that good jazz. (Which would be rather easy to plug into normal games too, outside of a campagin, but would not need to be balance consideration) That way, people can have their cake, and eat it too. Things may be said about how competitive the game might be, but trying to balance this sort of thing, trying to accomplish very different goals might just be a bad approach imo. Thats just my opinion, however.

@BrandNameDoves ... the interesting-thing is... their anti-psyker neutralization and their "miracles" of faith are simply some of the most focused and tightly-controlled psychic-powers in the setting. The band that claims to "unwaveringly" oppose the psyker has inconspicuously developed one of the most highly-psychic contingents within the Imperium.

@@polmMM-uk1rz I think it's just a faction flavour thing. Sword brethren also have 5 attacks on their chainswords. intitiates/Neophytes have to be cheap. If they costed the same as an assault intercessor, then you would just use assault intercessors. Also forced to take them in stacks of 10. So maybe the BT armory is just better than Khorne armory. You need a word with your chaos god.

Black templars have some decent stuff, the god damn tank tax tho is just stupid. Crusader squads are pretty damn cool… i do feel tho if you play these guys or slamander or blood angels or whatever your just having to slog up hill when you could just play the smurfs who probably have better characters and the primarch that does the 2x oath stuff which is a huge freaking deal. So yean nothing marines can put on the table right now is better than the ultra smurfs… Matt Ward would be so proud..

I've thought about starting BT before, though in 10th the army doesn't seem as appealing. In 9th the upgrade to their chaplains were meant to offset the inability to take psykers, but in 10th you're loosing psykers with no significant advantage as the army rule and enhancements are severely lackluster.

Fun fact: The BT index lists the Sword Brethren squad size as: 1 Castellan 4-10 Sword Brothers This makes it RAW an 11-man squad. But in the Munitorum points and the GW app, it lists their squad size as: 1 Castellan 4-9 Sword Brothers So we’ve got two different squad sizes depending on where you get your rules from. I’m pretty sure they intended it to be a 10-man squad, but the extra guy is there RAW.
