Just pointing it out since nobody else has yet...the album cover is a play on Elvis’ TCB (taking care of business) logo. Figured that was pretty obvious, but...
@catalyst6916 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I was waiting for her to speak to that. For all the time she spends berating the cover art (her only real negative, which is odd considering this is primarily a music review) she could at least do a bit of research beforehand. There are plenty of written reviews that I've read that picked up on this.

RIP Athon. I have to point out that he was their lead vocalist, at least any time that I saw them live. I lived in Savannah from 2006 to 2016, we used to hang out at the same bar, and the first time I met him he approached me because I was wearing an Opeth shirt. He was a friendly, outgoing person, and he knew how to put on a killer show. The last conversation I had with him he was happy, he had started a second band and was just stoked to have band rehearsal 3 or 4 nights out of every week. I know he'd be proud of the guys for continuing on in the face of what happened.

Was it The Jinx? I was just down in Savannah a couple weeks ago, and I saw Vatican open for Every Time I Die there.

It was, in fact. The Jinx was home away from home for me when I lived there. I haven't found a place that quite felt the same since I moved away.

Hell yeah. Cool little spot! Downtown Savannah is a really unique place.
@mosesgarner24046 жыл бұрын
Not exactly true. Athon Black Tusk has never leaned towards one person as the "lead vocalist" in fact his vocals were probably equal to that of Fidler with the drummer May doing the least amount of vocal work. Athon had a huge stage presence though. More so than Andrew Fidler.

Saw these guys open for Mastodon in Austin, TX a few years back, before Johnathan died. Never heard of them before hand, and I immediately bought a CD and a shirt. Johnathan had the beard-banging going strong, and was definitely a focus of their live presence. I was bummed when I heard he'd died. Anyway, great review, Sarah! I'm gonna pick this album up immediately.

I don;t always like the music presented and reviewed (although the reviews sometime change my mind), what is most impressive is how intelligent and eloquent everyone at Banger is. The way you guys talk about the music itself is clear that you are really connected. It's something gravely missing from today's culture. You'd be hard-pressed to find the same kind of insightfulness (at least) in most other genres (save Jazz maybe...). Thanks for giving those of us deeply invested in ALL culture some glimmer of hope. And fucking keep kicking ass!
@BangerTV6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Glenn. We think about this stuff a lot! What kind of music are you into?
@glennlavertu36446 жыл бұрын
Well I like to think that every genre of music has intelligent artists worth listening to (except K-Pop, Fuck K-Pop). I'm kind of all over the place tbh. In terms of metal though I'm a huge NWOBHM and Thrash fan from back in the day, but love the varieties of Black and Sludge. Been listening to Botanist, a strange band that replaced the guitar with a dulcimer. It doesn't always work, but when it does it's a knockout.

That was a great review, it opened my appetite to listen to this album, I Haven’t listen this genre for long time, I used to love those bands live, they inject the audience with adrenaline. Back on the 90’s I hosted a concert in Juarez, Mexico with various Death Metal bands, but was AxCx who mobilized the crowd until they were exhausted. Anyways, thanks for the review and awaken some nice old memories
@mexaloco6 жыл бұрын
DarkAgnesDoom they are or were very extreme, meaning, as soon the songs start the singer will jump to the audience or someone will go up the stage and dive, sometime Es he will hit people with the mic, no intentionally (I think), but the people responds so energetic. The songs are so short, but so intensive
@Weedeater586 жыл бұрын
Awesome! A friend of mine also hosted a show in like 06 and Anal Cunt closed the night. On top of the fee for performance they required 2 large pizza's and sprite. And then made it sound like it was a deal breaker if we couldn't make it happen. During the set Seth cleaned out his table on stage with the sprite he requested to have. Crazy show!

While waiting for today's instalment, I was entertaining myself by listening to... this Black Tusk album! It's great. It reminds me of so many great hardcore and punk bands. Sarah, thanks for mentioning DRI, I was wracking my brains trying to put my finger on that one! But also, the Motorhead influence is strong as is AC/DC even, and UK Subs on Never Ending Daymare. Great review. And while I've never given Black Tusk much of a chance in the past, this one I think will be my release of the week.
@chrispayne34026 жыл бұрын
DarkAgnesDoom I could throw so many other hardcore references at this (SOIA for another one). But this is as metal as it is HC. A great all-rounder as they say.

So, on the topic of ugly album covers (although I really like this one), how come I've never heard of anyone mentioning Meshuggah's cover for "obZen"? It's especially puzzling since it contains the classic track "Bleed" which is basically their theme song... It almost makes me angry how much I dislike that cover, yet no one seems to share my opinion... Anyone actually think it's a good cover?
@alexdon78796 жыл бұрын
It has the opposite effect on me , I heard a lot of hardcore bands the last two years and I am bit bored of it, I liked the blend of hardcore and sludge ( and their album production on the last album) and now that they went more hardcore ...well...they sound to me like dozen other bands in hardcore ...the sludge element made them bit more distinguished from the rest

all killer no filler: i beg to disagree, I think this is the worst Black Tusk album to date. they amped up the hardcore influence massively ( so the D.R.I. reference is valid). not that I have a gripe with that per se, but it just never was the strength of Black Tusk to begin with I think. They are pretty generic in that. When combine it with their more groovy, southern side to it, this is where they shine. A few killers, lot of fillers I would say. I found this album pretty tame, generic and boring to be honest.
