Phil! My absolute pleasure. I know from your Jasta interview (listening now as per the recommendation of a viewer's comment) that you don't care to read the metal blogs/comment section, so the fact that you came and commented means a lot. You also likely won't see the wealth of comments from people saying they either weren't a fan before (or were but the love dissipated), but 'The Valley' has changed that and they LOVE it. I think that crossover appeal, even to people who say they don't like anything core-related, is proof positive of the masterpiece you've crated here. Congrats! I look forward to seeing you reap the benefits and grow even further. See you next time you're in Toronto!

Man, I think it might end up ousting 'This Is Exile' as my favourite over time. I also REALLY liked the self-titled though. The lyrical throwback to the previous albums in the first song was sick, as was the fact that the album can play continuously, with the ending connecting with the beginning.

I've always liked Whitechapel, but felt like their sound was somewhat limited. The Valley changed that for sure. I imagine Eddie Hermida is jealous at Phil's ability to use clean vocals in deathcore the right way haha. Also, I can't wait for the new Full of Hell either. Their new song was badass.

You really put this in perspective for me as an almost 30 year old fan I grew up with the somatic defilement and this is exile in my last few years of high school so their last couple albums haven't resonated with me. A New Era of Corruption is my favorite so you can get a feel for what I mean. This new album has struck a cord with me and you've really helped solidify that.

Fuck. That means so much. Thank you so much, Alex! I'm glad I could help solidify for you. We're basically the same age (you a 1990 baby?), so we've more or less had a similar path. I would be very into that. Another deathcore band who evolved into their own sound. I appreciate their steadfast devotion to the DEATH side of the equation.

As good as this album is All Shall Perish will always be overlooked for doing the 'whole grown up, proggy deathcore' album first with Awaken the Dreamers. I remember the amount of flak it copped at the time. And considering 11 years ago deathcore had not even peaked yet as a sub genre, it shows how visionary the band was making that record.
@AggressiveTendencies5 жыл бұрын
That album is really great. I saw them while they were touring that IIRC. Shame that guitarist couldn't keep it together. I heard he had problems with alcoholism. I hope he's doing well.

Upon just two full listenings I think it's a pretty good album. Hickory Creek is a very somber, melancholic kind of 'ballad'. The voice, the music, the ambiguos guitar riffs flowing in the background very indistinguishably because the album is in freaking G# I think, everything there sounds so well connected. It's in my opinion the track that truly stands out on its own. Overall, the atmosphere makes this a great listen. I doesn't have many annoying childish breakdowns which makes it sound so mature for a "deathcore" band. I would recommend this for metal elitists who got tired of listening to Obscura, Inferi and Beyond Creation's recent great records.
@AggressiveTendencies5 жыл бұрын
Hell yeah. Thanks for weighing in. It definitely a mature sound for deathcore.

Definitely a difficult question. Off the top of my head, Phil Bozeman (Whitechapel), Dylan Walker (Full of Hell), Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation), Trevor Strnad (The Black Dahlia Murder) and...not exactly fully metal, but Jacob Bannon (Converge) is always tops.
@princealigorna74685 жыл бұрын
I was extremely worried about this band adding clean vocals...but it worked. And I think that can be attributed to a few things. First of all, they're used sparingly. Second, Phil seems to have taken his time to learn his natural range, and doesn't do anything to stray from it. When he uses the clean vocals, he's not trying to over-impress with them and do something he just can't do. No stupid falsettos. No nasally strains. He stays in the pocket, and it's to the songs' benefit. Lastly, he learned his natural range compliments the moodiness of the band's songwriting. If Phil had a whinny, nasally emo voice, it wouldn't fit. But that deeper, atmospheric voice of his fits well with the dark nature of the songs. Basically, Phil did everything Eddie didn't. And that's why this works so much better than whatever the fuck Suicide Silence was trying to do.
@AggressiveTendencies5 жыл бұрын
Man, Phil blew me a way. Good point about working with his range. He utilizes it so effectively. That's not me saying he didn't try hard because I'm sure he pushed and grew his range over what it was when he first started, but he didn't try to do any vocal acrobatics, which I think fits the somber mood from the lyrics and musical feel.
@princealigorna74685 жыл бұрын
@@AggressiveTendencies I don't think pocket singing gets enough credit. It's like pocket drumming. Sometimes, you don't need to be Flo Mournier. Sometimes you just need to be Phil Rudd. If you got the voice for acrobatics, sure, go for it. But sometimes it's more effective to just only do what the music demands of you. And of course, as the music grows, so can the vocal technique. But I think some extreme vocalists try to jump too quickly into trying to be the best clean singer in the world, when they just aren't. Just learn what you can do, and build from it with time.
@AggressiveTendencies5 жыл бұрын
@@princealigorna7468 Playing in the pocket in general, no matter your instrument, is so important. There are times to show off, but more often than not it's time to stay in your lane and play for the song, not your ego.

I think a lot of people are into this who otherwise weren't into the band, so I think it's a good spot. If it's not heavy enough, you could try 'This Is Exile' next, which is widely considered their masterpiece, or head back to 'The Somatic Defilement' for even more brutality. The self-titled album is a nice in between. Thanks for watching!

I would say Phil is defenitively expanding his vocal performance. From just a screamer/growler to singer. In extreme Metal he is definitely top ten... Outside the subgenre singers like Tatiana Shmaylyuk from Jinjer demonstrate a whole different skill set and level... I hope Phile keeps practicing his singing and reach A New Level (pun intended) xD If you reading this haven't heard Jinjer... Go! It is definitively worth it!
