What a cool story. Wouldn't it been interesting if the Miller were fighting the personification of his anger? (building off the idea of him beating his addiction to tobacco). I've read stories in other cultures about how a bad habit would become manifest and you would have to fight and defeat it to become a better version of yourself. Most famously you sort of see this with Cecil, the main character of FFIV where in order to become a Paladin he has to defeat the Dark Knight version of himself by not giving into his anger and fighting and using violence. Anyway, total conjecture but I think stories that are open to that sort of musing are awesome too! Thank you for the tale :)

If there's one thing ive learned in all my time studying various folklores and the occult, its that there are exceedingly few examples of actually evil (or good for that matter) beings. Dark, mischevious and/or harmful, sure, but almost never evil. Assuming its not just an allegory, seems like this Black Walker was aiding the Miller by giving him something to battle during his withdrawal. Imagine if he didn't... that much rage and violence probably could have ended the lives of many a villager. And instead, it only ended the life of a single spirit, and thankfully, those guys tend to come back.
