I spent an hour getting the first part down last night. I was so stoked when I was able to repeat it a few times in rhythm. Thank you VERY much.

When I started playing a few decades ago with a Yamaha FG-180 (remember them?), my mentor left me with a guitar tuned to D and that's the way I got used to playing. No clip-on doo-dads, just nails, and just waiting for the Doobs to come up with this incredible yet simple base for a show-stopping mist of love. Love them.

Fantastic playing and great tutorial - the execution brings out such harmonics and overtones - you're really making that thing sing

You did a great job isolating and clarifying the fingerings for the chords ... especially the G and the Bb alterations.

@@Guitarreference You just taught me how to play that song for the first time. Took me only 15 minutes with your video. Otherwise, I'd still be groping through it by ear. lol

Wow... Wonderful playing Shawn. As much as I would love to, I don't think I could manage this. I will have to stay with a pick. 5 Star my man.

Great vid! I was looking for ideas to embellish the picking in this tune. I'm good enough to have figured out what Patrick was doing but my improv skills aren't that developed yet so... I'm gonna have to steal some of your ideas.

You sure don't see or hear music like this anymore. I started playing guitar at 14 and taught myself basic chords and power chords and that one scale we all know that works with everything lol. I've mastered those. But now I'm almost 32 and I still don't know a lot of chords and I have almost zero skill in finger picking. I look at this and think to myself I'll never be able to do this but I've come so far and dammit this will be the first real finger picking song I learn
@jamesfuentes29115 жыл бұрын
I've been playing for over 35 years and kind of in the same boat: learned a lot of cool stuff along the way but never really made a good run at doing some good old fingerpickin' on the acoustic and damn it, I'm gonna get this one down!

Good tutorial, sounds super accurate. Just some constructive criticism - always be sure to explain as/before you're breaking something down on the guitar, a couple times you get a little ahead of you self and almost explain what you're doing a tiny bit behind you actually playing it which makes it a little bit difficult to follow along without a lot of rewinding. Other than that (which I only noticed a couple times) I appreciate this very much. It's a great lesson

I wish you would explain it like the guy on mando lessons. I jus can’t get pickin down.. I’m kinda of a slow learner.. but I think that’s as slow as you can go.. but thank you tho. And can’t pick worth a darn.. what’s a good first lesson learned to get some stuff down? You got a link for like beginner pickers

Really helpful lesson! Regarding "This is where it gets a little bit tricky" @ 3:23. I'm pretty sure you're fretting a D with your middle finger planted on the B string, but while that's how it looks & sounds you don't say anything about it while you're hammering down (the A) on the G string at the 2nd fret while hitting open D at the same time. Do I see/hear this correctly?
@dantwomey42154 жыл бұрын
I had to take a break because I was almost furious a couple of times where there was some lack of clarity. One of the spots was the one Mr. Perry indicated ,albeit for another reason. I'm in my break. Haha...when fury erupts, take the break. The good news Sean is that with a couple of tweaks you will be amongst best on KZbin. Only a few have tackled this song as a tutorial. I busk in Boston, after Bruins, Celts and Sox Games. I know what songs SMASH. This may land in the Top 5 of ALL TIME/EVERY DEMOGRAPHIC. After my Pasta I'm sticking with you Sean! Haha! I won't criticize. You're too good a player. You're likable. You'll be a KZbin star! And I hope you make $$ or whatever benies KZbin Gurus get. Here's something you might examine. At the point where you say "here's where it gets a little tricky" you probably spent a little too much time on that bit,(you recommend dedicating separate practice time to the little hammeron )and , it seemed, not enough on, let's say, the configuration down by the 8th fret. A lot is left to our ears and that's why we go to guys like you for help. Haha! If ya can quickly say " Right hand first finger on D string etc'it will help less advanced players like myself. . This is the first time ,ever, I 've critiqued any KZbin video. Why now? I'm in no authoritative position. I do have a keen eye on who has "It" and you do Sean (or is it Patrick, or both like my nephew? Haha!) As the great Reggie Jackson once made clear " People don't 'Boo' nobodies" and you're a "somebody". Here's where I do have credentials. Trust and believe. Keep it up Sir. I'm gonna nail this song with your help. There should be 300 tutorials on this song but I'm looking at about six or seven cats in the World intelligent enough to take this gem on. That tells me something in itself. Knockem' Dead Sir.
