I bought my first ball about a year and a half ago and got it drilled for conventional/straight bowling. Average went up, but I just purchased one of these because I want to work on developing a hook. With my first ball, it was a 12lb that I averaged at 18mph. The pink Black Widow urethane is 14lbs and I'm getting it drilled for fingertips with slugs. Picking it up today and going to roll a few games with a buddy. Get the feeling it's going to be a huge learning curve (no pun intended) as I'm 34 and I've rolled straight my entire life. But, been getting a bit more serious about bowling over the past couple years and want to get my average closer to 175+ rather than 135+. All in good fun!

First off, all urethane balls need about 10 shots on them in warm up to get oily and reach equilibrium with the lane. Once that occurs then you can get lined up. Secondly, people don't realize that balls like this Pink, with really strong cores, high flare potential, super strong coverstocks with strong layouts are designed to be played "straighter from the outside." That is the magic of these balls. They are a gift to the low rev stroker. They hook very early, set and roll smooth to the pocket without overreacting. As long as you keep your angles closed and play down and in, you will be amazingly rewarded by balls like this. Try to push it out and back and you will be disappointed.

I use my UC3 1st game and then go to Scorpion hybrid and then Web Pearl reactive for each game as I also move left.

Nice review, thanks ! Just a correction : UC3 is not urethane. Storm/Rotogrip website has it in the category of "Pearl". And in a Storm video it is mentioned that it is not pure urethane, but some mix.

One thing people have to keep in mind when it comes to urethane, is that Urethane will always hook off the lane on the first shot with it. Always has, always will. That happened to me with my Fab Blue Hammer back in 1988, and still did with both of my Black Widow Purple Pearl Urethanes (both the Japanese release and the S. Korean release). It starts to tame down after the 3rd to 5th shot, but it's the shape of the ball downlane that you need to look at when comparing. If you want a true comparison between the Black Widow Pink Pearl Urethane and the re-released Purple Pearl Hammer (the Reynosa pour), take the Pink Pearl Urethane up to the same surface as the Purple Pearl Urethane, and compare.

Very similar to me! (KH). Due to the high flare of this ball, since it’s asymmetrical I would recommend the purple hammer urethane over this one. For slower speeds and lower tilts this ball can end up burning up too quick and quitting in the back end of the lane.

@@mariansowinski8967 always recommend working with your local pro, but a layout that gets the ball down the lane. The urethanes have such early hook and paired with a “slower” speed and lower tilt you want to make sure it has enough energy left down lane.

This answer depends entirely on how much you like and use urethane and how much you bowl. If you bowl a lot and are tuned into the nuisances of the sport, then having the two can certainly assist with a small adjustment in ball motion when needed. If you don’t bowl that often or are just a beginner/intermediate, then I would not suggest both. They do not differ enough to carry both if your not making those minuscule adjustments. FYI, The purple is symmetrical and the pink is asymmetric which means the pink will flare more and hook earlier. The “advantage” to the pink vs. the purple is that the asymmetric core allows for more versatile layouts. Thanks for watching!

Something like a Brunswick Rhino (or equivalent) would work nice. Or a Twist. The Rhino would give you a little more hook.

@@DownLaneBowling Wow. If they said that, then i am baffled....it could be a misunderstanding ....or there could be is a directive to market it as such. As if people wouldn't notice that it absorbs oil and moves differently. I believe that is why the Purple Hammer cover is called "Pearl Urethane" and not plain "urethane", but sometimes it's marketing. Oh well haha. No worries. ^_^

Could’ve said for most recreational bowlers or house shot only bowlers any urethane won’t be great. Depending on the shot and lane surface of course.

I think what he said makes perfect sense. The majority of league bowlers on a typical house shot will have the most success with a cheater resin ball. Urethane requires more skill and is less forgiving and most house shot bowlers will likely not avg very high since the ball does not make up for their inconsistencies. Tournament bowlers are very accurate and consistent and urethane can be used by them with success on patterns that are flippy or hard to control.
