He made the ribbon a moderator in a chemical reaction he caused in his beard. He would weave in strands of hemp fiber without drying it and tie in the ribbons before igniting the fuse it made. His dreadlocked beard helped keep the reaction slow too so his beard would smolder and frame his head in smoke. As he breathed the cherries on the ends of the lit portions of hair and hemp would get brighter and softer almost blinking in dark enough conditions. An unholy glow. It worked like a charm too, everybody was terrified

One of the aquariums nearby also has pieces of the QAR on display within fish tanks. It is really amazing how this area has embraced the history of the pirates. Piracy in that era was sooo much different and in many ways polar opposite of what most people think they know about how it all functioned and in many places still does to this day. They were far more egalitarian with their mates, ran ships more democratically than most any nation on Earth has ever been, most captains were elected and recallable making it an earned position that poor performance would have revoked, had regulations restricting behavior among eachother and the general public and how attacks were to be executed (like only taking monarch wealth, not harming civilians and only engaging with the monarchs officials, rules against drunkenness and assault, etc), prisoners would be treated, etc, generally split their gains equally or according to contribution, had disability and "retirement" systems for mates who were injured and would be temporarily or permanently unable to fully participate or were simply too old as well as compensation to the families of fallen comrades, the list goes on. Obviously, not all functioned this way and there were plenty of cases that deviate in one way or another, but it was far more common to see ships function more as a unit of equals and they were often not anywhere near as violent, gross or ignorant as they're made out to be nor was it always just a matter of greed as many went long periods of not pirating and when they were able to find straight work would leave the lifestyle and never look back. Some were former prisoners escaping persecution, many had their origins in poverty and/or political dissent or action, it's mad complex and there are a number of fascinating aspects of the tradition and lifestyle. But it's almost always a far cry from the idea most have in their heads lol Many did start out working for a state and when their monarch no longer had any use for them knew nothing else and couldn't find legitimate work, sometimes feeling betrayed by their former employer and turning to robbing them out of spite without the ability to flee to the many nations that they'd already robbed. But they were rarely the brutes and tyrants they're depicted as in media. Unfortunately, the big deviants from the more typical men and even women of the tradition are the ones who make the history books for their treachery.

The way I heard it, Maynard was fighting Blackbeard one on one when one of his sailors stabbed Blackbeard in the back. Maynard then chewed that sailor out for either stealing his kill or interrupting a pari of gentlemen fundamentally disagreeing wit one another.
@anthonykryzak2733 жыл бұрын
I recall reading something similar. In one of his memoirs Maynard took credit for killing Blackbeard in single combat (Highly Embellished)- he claimed that each time blackbeard was stabbed or cut he became more and more furious. in the version that I read Maynard took credit for killing blackbeard in unassisted 1v1. I also recall a footnote saying that historians doubt Maynard's personal account.

Something interesting about the battle between Maynard and Blackbeard is that despite having more men on their sides, the pirate-hunters had no cannons! Yet in Maynard's account he says that the reason Blackbeard couldn't sail away is that the pirate-hunters managed to shoot away the jib and fore-halliards of the pirate sloop. To accomplish this with just muskets and pistols Maynard must have been incredibly lucky!

Coming from VA living in SC I have a few things to add Blackbeard's head was put on a pike near the then Virginia Capital on one of the Wharf. Second having sailed the area where the 2 ships were lost, it either had to be an incompetent helmsman or intentional. The only other possible reason would be contrary winds to the current. Blackbeard was to good to try such a maneuver in those conditions 3 Having been out in Charlestown Harbor (Charles Town) 5 ships could have easily held the town hostage. It isn't that wide at the mouth making it an excellent port with many barrier islands which makes for an excellent anchorage.

Hello Simon. Love your work. Listening to this while i do mine is both treat and a delight. Love as i do this tale of Blackbeard, you sadly didnt mention my favorite exploit of his. Namely what happened after he abandoned the Queen Anne’s Revenge. Or at least a legend of it. While it is true that Blackbeard did so to split up his crew of hundreds, how he did so was absolute barbarism With only two full sloops remaining of his fleet, there was precious few room to carry both the crew of the Queen Anne and the Treasure Hoard it carried. A choice was made between the two and Blackbeard chose what was appropriate to his style. He took the treasure and marooned the rest. Sailing away with the treasure hoard while leaving hundreds behind to starve and rot. A devil in the flesh and died as one. Defiant against all. A true pirate.

Oh hey, I've been to Ocracoke Island several times before. They must have been pretty far out there cause the slope of the land on Ocracoke is like 1-2 degrees so by like fifty feet out past the waves, it's only like waist to chest height. Also, NEVER go in the afternoon. You're okay to like MAYBE 2 PM, but then you gotta get outta there. The horse flies absolutely LOVE the afternoon in the summer and they become BRUTAL as the sun gets lower. Worst is, it sneaks up on you because it's such a beautiful place with warm waters and they start coming out at like the full heat of the day around 3, so you're better off going earlier if you don't want to drive two hours each way for a day trip that lasts two hours. (And that's not exactly a two hour drive, there's a ferry you have to wait on, and there's usually a wait during the summer when most, like me, get a chance to visit)

15:49 how is that not terrifying? Imagine hearing about Blackbeard and then finally seeing him in battle. He's tall, broad, armed to the teeth, a long beard, fuses creating smoke that makes him seem like some demon. And then you notice the colorful ribbons. Why does he have them? For what purpose? Is he mentally ill as well? Am I fighting an infamous pirate known for being a terror on the seas and now I'm finding out that he's mental as well? If he's as crazy as he seems, is he even afraid of death? If he isn't, will he even surrender? Will he fight until everyone's dead?

To anyone who is interested in Blackbeard and beach vacations to a small town. Beaufort North Carolina is rich in black beard history. The Hammock House is the house that he would visit after conquests/pillages. This town is near the outer banks of North Carolina. There are some haunted stories around the town about Blackbeard, if you’re interested in things like that.

Great episode! Would ever consider doing biographies of other naval leaders such as Zheng He or William Bligh, or even one of the Viking explorers such as Erik the Red?

Cool video. I live about an hour from Ocracoke North Carolina, where he had his home base, and about 10 minutes from Beaufort where he had a house, and we're Queen Anne's Revenge sank. This story hits close to home, literally! Thank you Simon.

He was certainly a character. I really love the bit with the slow fuses. I know there are those who think he was evil. I don't think he was nearly as bad as some other pirates I've read about. But at his worst, he couldn't have been as evil as Francois L'Olonnais. That guy was just straight-up psycho.

I liked the mention of the fuses Blackbeard would light, but I have heard they weren't JUST under his hat, he also was supposed to have tied them to his long beard as well. While it was purely theatrical, and it would potentially lead to a singed beard, I imagine it wouldn't have bothered him very much, as I doubt he looked exceedingly well-kempt

Great video! Interestingly enough, I went to high school in SC...one of my classmates was a descendent of Blackbeard...in my biology class where the teacher was a descendant of the captain who captured/killed Blackbeard, Cpt Maynard in NC. I waited for their inevitable fight-to-the-death.

Funny story about that “A General History of the Pyrates” book... I actually took a class last semester about Pirate Literature because it fulfilled an American Historical Era Literature requirement for my Literature major and the first book we were assigned to read (and would reference throughout the semester) was “A General History of the Pyrates” It was a fun and chill class, and the professor is obsessed with pirates and how they are portrayed (whether or not they are capable of having or expressing feelings) in literature. Glad I got him again for another literature class this semester (Melville and Moby Dick).

I'm not an academic however I study the golden age of piracy during the early 1700s rigorously, currently I'm looking into the involvement of jacobitism within the world of piracy. I've been doing quite a handful of research on Edward Blackbeards history these past two years and still got more to go. I mosty read authors books and have a book full of primary sources but very little on blackbeard. Where and how can I access primary sources particularly on blackbeards history? I'm primarily looking for the french primary sources on the November - 17th - 1717 or 28th depending on which calendar, event of the capture of La Concorde 100 miles off Martinique, north east of Barbados, Windward island chain, eastern Caribbean...
