Metal Shear Restoration (Rebar Shear)

This antique metal shear was used to cut rebar to size in construction site. It must have been left to the elements for a very long time since it was completely welded by rust. Probably my most challenging restoration just for how seized it was.
The shear was made in France ("acier forgé" means "forged steel")
quiet some time ago. I wouldn't be surprised if this had 70 years or more. All together it weights 30kg (66lbs).
I am not able to find any interesting information at all about this tool brand, if you know better please write in comments and I'll update this section.

To disassleble I used a lot of penetrating oil, heat and elbow grease. You can't see me removing all parts in video because it has been a very long process and I wasn't able to record everything
1:13 First electrolysis (to help me break down some of the rust and disassemble the tool): water and sodium carbonate solution, parts connected to negative, steel sacrificial anodes to positive of a 12V DC power supply (car battery charger). 3-4 hrs at 5amp.
3:27 Cutting stuck pin to remove last components
3:47 Drilling out old pin
4:06 Welding a rebar piece to the sheared bolt to try removing it from the opposite side (total failure)
4:35 Cutting shredded bolt
4:45 Drilling it out from the inside
5:03 Re threading the hole with M16 tap
5:33 Trip to the car wash to degrease and pressure wash
6:12 Electrolysis to clean metal. As First one but one piece at the time
7:47 Removing rust from handle with twisted wire wheel on the angle grinder
8:23 Painting with "Hammerite" "Dark Green Hammered Finish" paint. (Off camera I also degreased all part with acetone before painting)
10:30 Removing zinc plating from new hardware with muriatic acid (nasty fumes and heavy acid, did outside and with full body protection)
10:53 Neutralizing acid with water and baking soda
11:15 Protecting uncoated hardware with synthetic oil
11.30 Fabricating new pin out of a long bolt and two closed nuts.
12:17 Grinding new edges on the steel jaws (frequently cooling in water to prevent tempering)
13:00 Assembling with lots of synthetic oil
13:55 I turned this jaw the other way because if I goround this one clean they wouldn't close all the way
Without properly securing it to a solid bench (like it's supposed to be, but I don't have one at the moment) I was able to shear:
15:10 10mm round stock aluminum
15:20 12mm round stock brass
15:27 10mm rebar
15:35 12mm round stock mild steel
I guess it can cut a couple mm wider stock if mounted properly.

The french branch was only created in 1988, but it does not mean that your hardware was not produced at an earlier date. Breveté just means patented. It's possible the firm protected its innovations for the french market long before they created the french subsidiary cie.

What kind of sound effects can you hear?

They are not actually sound effects, but what the recorded sounds sound like when the video is sped up. And I understand the "satisfying" reaction to certain sounds. There are entire genres of videos dedicated to over-hearing subtle sound. To some, the sound of a babbling stream (or someone eating with their mouth open) is a pleasing sound. To people with my sensory sensitivity, those same sounds cause extremely violent urges to stop that sound from ever happening on this Earth ever again.

What is happening here is what should be happening everywhere. Restoration of old and worn out tools, cars, appliances, etc., is what makes these pieces of history viable. What a wonderful way to show children how people did their jobs, lived and made it through their day to day lives before we all started burying our faces and our lives into computers, smart phones, televisions with thousands of channels and music on demand. Very good work and demonstration Black Beard Projects. This makes an old man like me want to find something like this and get back to work. Believe me, retirement is overrated.

Try this: mix 1 part each of Kerosene, Acetone, Mineral Spirits, and Automatic Transmission Fluid (any brand that is red colored.) It works amazing as a penetrating oil/cleaner and can be applied to stuck things and breaks them free with ease- and it is very cheap to make. It works best of you heat the bolts, apply the fluid, wait 5 or so minutes, then give a few sharp taps with a hammer in the direction parallel to the bolt shaft, then wrench on it. It works wonders for saving rusted things and it smells good too! Nice work, that is a beautiful tool now.

Great video, really enjoyed seeing it all come together. The green Hammerite looks great with the white writing. A quick thought. When you are trying to break old nuts and bolts loose it is better to try and use a 'breaker bar' rather than one with a ratchet. The ratchets are not really designed for the heavy loads they experience when cracking a seized nut and it is very easy to damage them by doing this. Better to use the breaker bar to get it loose then swap to the ratchet for speed. Cheers, keep up the great work. 👍👍👍

I believe it's even worse - a torgue wrench and not just any ratchet. He'll destroy that wrench really fast if he continues to use it to loosen stuck screws.

Nice job at they beggining you heated up the bolt to release the rust . Not to tell ya what to do but. Its better to heat the surrounding area. Then dump water on it. Your expanding the threads then that loosens the bolt. But. Again with the but. If you expand by heating the surrounding area then the water it will make the threads pop loose the rust krinkles loose got it from an old guy that that was a blacksmith learned alot from him try it theyll come right away thanks for reading keep up the restorations !!
