I don’t think the critics watched the same video as me. Your dial indicator at the end showed pretty much perfect precision. People just want to hate what they cannot do themselves to make themselves feel better about being unaccomplished and lazy. Good on you for bringing an old machine back to life and probably learning some new skills and techniques.
@Hereford16424 ай бұрын
Any piece turned in a lathe will end up round in cross section along its length so rotating the turned brass with the dial indicator in one position tells you nothing much. The fact that the dial indicator was reading 10 at the tailstock end and 20 at the chuck end tells you that the lathe is not aligned and is turning a taper rather than a true cylinder.

I dont think almost any "lathe restorer" knows what they do. They call i a restauration but its onley cosmetic. In my oppinion the restauration is when you grind/scrape the bed/ways so it preformes as new. The paint has nothing to do with the restauration its just a final last touch.

Hateful comments from some knobs. Who in their right mind is going to restore an old girl like this for serious professional fee-paying work? Who?!!... Surely anyone capable of restoring a machine like this, to its original condition, isn't going to use it for serious work. Moreover, with such high skill sets surely they'd be working on or focusing on high end lathes to restore and work with, the pretentious sarcastic so and so's! This lathe restoration is a lovely aesthetic example. At that level you've done a smashing job restoring it from scrap. But I believe that was your sole intention for the work done. I've decided to comment as the son of a Miller. I've inherited dad's occasional metal turning lathe he used at home. It was absolutely, absolutely knackered when he bought it second hand. I was going to scrap it then saw a Chinese lady restore an old clapped out lathe in China I her back garden. This motivated me to do something similar to Dad's old lathe. However, I had no idea which model it was until I chanced on your smashing restoration presentation. Now I know approximately the model it is, I can begin to look into it more enthusiastically. You even restored the labels and I thought the finishing paint excellent as this seems a very typical Chinese Communist colour choice for machinery apart from light green they may have also chosen at the time. Thank you for this shared experience. It's much appreciated.
