I found another one of this huge cleaver in a flea market. Had to have it! This time I went for a more traditional handle construction while still making it my own way. Ended up making the handle with two wood species that I already matched together and really liked, olive wood and wengè and also added felt white/gray liner, simple but not plain! Decided to go for many and small (3mm) pins instead of fewer and bigger. This is always a nice challenge to keep everything lined up properly and I like it more for very large handles like this one.
Have you seen the other very similar cleaver I took care of?
• Insanely Big Butcher C...
I think this is the start of a new collection!
The aluminum one is bigger in size but a lot heavier as the blade itself is way thicker.
I really like this design, I know very little about these and this time again I can't read any makers mark but I have been told were used by butchers so the extra mass helps to cut thick stuff.
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:
www.amazon.com/shop/blackbear...
It's affiliate marketing, so if you order something from here you'll help the channel for free! Thank you!
Ind ex of operation and materials:
0:53 Cut old pins with metal cutting band saw. Most of the time pins are peened in old thigns like this one, it's easier to push them out by cutting off one side
1:24 Quick brush with steel wire brush and de grease with nitro solvent to take the loose stuff out
1:44 Remove rust and patina with steel wire wheel on the bench grinder
2:13 Easy matt finish achieved with a fine abrasive pad on the angle grinder. I like the old texture, these pads do not remove much material att all.
2:50 Grind new blade profile with 2x72 belt grinder
3:50 Round cornes with die grinder and stone bits
4:30 Flatten the tang to a decent degree so scales sits flatter
5:20 Grinding bevels on the slac of the 2x72 belt grinder
6:10 Dark patina finish on the blade with cold blue and oil
6:38 Buff edge with fine polishing coumpond and cotton wheel on the bench grinder
7:00 Mark pins position with calipers and dividers
7:22 Center punch pins holes
7:44 Drill 3mm pin holes
8:15 Felt liner preparation, for more details check this video: • Felt And Resin Liner /...
10:28 Cut scales materials to size with band saw
11:05 Grind angled edge between differen wood
11:40 First scales glue up with felt lines
12:12 Second scales glue up with more felt under the wood
12:45 Cut to rough size
13:00 Position first scale on the handle with ca glue and tape for quick and very reliable hole match drilling
13:40 Repeat for the other side, this way holes match perfectly
14:28 Ca glue bond is easy to break and leaves little residue thans to the tape
14:35 Roung shape cut of the scales
14:56 Shape the top part of the scales
15:14 Finish the top part of the scales up to 800 grit sandpaper
15:33 Final glue up with 90 min epoxy
16:04 Clean squeezeout with nitro solvent
16:22 Grind handle to shape with belt grinder
17:30 Hand sand up to 800grit
18:18 Wax finish, just an experiment as I am bored of always using boiled linseed oil!
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!

Pardon, but it is obvious that you do not understand the word"restore" It means to return as close as possible to "original" condition. What you did was "renovate" You decided that you know how to make a better bone clever than the people that made this one decades ago. Too many pins, wrong wood, resin impregnated cloth and the scales are the wrong shape. Sore 95% for the blade and -40 for not knowing what restore means.

There's something about these projects that feel different from other restore jobs I follow. Other guys sand out every defect and polish every detail until it looks showroom new. But this here it's just cleaned up a bit. It still has an old look, like the years of neglect just didn't happen. I can dig that.

I’ve unsubscribed to most of the restoration channels I ever subscribed to; I couldn’t stand the insistence on a mirror finish on every single little thing. So I think I get what you mean. It still looks old but now it wouldn’t automatically be a health hazard to use it.

The problem I have with trying to keep the pitting is it can be a deeper source of rust in later years. Buff that shit out for the long term health of the blade!

I love this! I think I will get one for my former wife and her fiance (who met while we were married) for a wedding present as an act of reconciliation. I can show my gratitude by a nice boat trip to the middle of the lake, and introduce them to their present. We can then have a smile and officially 'bury the hatchet'!

I love your work. Keep up the good show. I like the fact you restore the blades to a "usable" condition and do not fill the old blemishes. It leaves the knives and blades you "recreate" their former character. They in themselves become the work of art. Nice job! Keep it up!

Dieses Fleischerbeil braucht den großen Handgriff mit dem Widerlager für die Hand, damit beherrscht der Fleischer das Beil mit einer Hand bei seiner Arbeit. Eine schöne Arbeit die du gemacht hast. This meat cleaver needs the large handle with the abutment for the hand, so the butcher can control the cleaver with one hand at his work. Nice work that you did.
