They all loved Kermit, but hey that was 15 years ago, seemingly now we are worried about an assistance dog, give me a f***ing break. Kermit died 1 year before my friend, there was no better devotion that I've ever seen. He was trained to open doors for her, pick up the phone for her, open the washing machine door, and to never leave her side when she had toppled over in her wheelchair. Kermit did this and more, in her last 10 years he gave her reasons to hang on and she did for him too.

Daniel ShenSmith, BlackBeltBarrister, thank you for sharing this video and comments. I really appreciate your help and informative support. The ASDA store manager should have immediately reported the incident to headquarters in Leeds for both legal advice and concerns their security staff assaulted a customer with a service dog, i.e., discrimination against a disabled person and her service animal. I wonder what ASDA headquarters at Leeds are thinking now that this video and comments have gone viral 🤔. ASDA staff are sometimes given the wrong advice and training. I and my family stopped shopping in ASDA Morriston near Swansea after a discrimination incident. It cost them my family and I purchasing £300 to £500 of shopping every two weeks. I take my customer purchases where I am treated kindly and with dignity as a wheelchair user and armed forces veteran. I would suggest this lady never shop in an ASDA store again. If everyone did this, the store, manager, and staff might treat their customers better or end up loosing their jobs and the store closing down. Customers can make or break a store by excluding them when they treat their customers badly. Tesco might find a similar situation. Our local store has now employed car parking management and began issuing car parking fines for shopping longer than 3 hours, even if you are disabled. Apparently, Tesco is about to share the car park with a fast food outlet, McDonald's next year. I am dreading to think what will happen when they start building there at the end of this year. The chaos it will cause.

Thank you for covering this Daniel. As a differently abled person myself (I've battled rheumatoid, and now osteo arthritis too, for over 20 years) too often we are treated as "less than." I work as security in a pub. We have live music after 8pm. A woman approached around 9.30pm in a motorised chair. She was accompanied by a male and a dog that had no indication that it was a service / assistance animal. As standard we advised that we do not allow dogs inside after 8pm , this woman stood up from her chair and aggressively stated “you have to let me in, the dog is an assistance animal”. She went on to insist (in the meantime the male was repeating to her “its to protect the animals hearing”) and we just repeated that we do not allow any animals inside during live bands as it could damage or stress the animal. We suggested her friend could go inside, get the drinks and she, the dog and her friend were welcome to stay in the smoking area. She insisted “it is a service dog, you are breaking the law”. The venue manager came outside and explained our policy - to protect animals. She got just as aggressive with the manager …. And then realised I was filming her. With this she stormed off, her friend apologising for her being unreasonable. I would rather be accused of “prejudice” than animal cruelty - she obviously believed her entitlement was more important than the poor dog.

Some dogs are used to help traumatised Individuals to enter busy, public spaces. I used to work with injured soldiers who were seized by anxiety in crowds until they had the re-assurance of an Assistance Dog. They knew that the dog would quickly sense their fear, and lead them to a quiet spot outside, even if the person themselves was too overcome with stress to manage that alone. And there are Ward Dogs - the dogs who go into hospitals as calming companions for the elderly. All of these dogs need training in social environments (like supermarkets), and that training is often done by volunteer trainers taking the dogs wherever they go.

One thing that is being overlooked here, we are seeing this from one side, what we don't see is the fact is what they see a lot of, is there are people buying what looks like legitimate service/assistance dog jackets and putting them on their dog so they can take them out shopping to places they would otherwise not be allowed to take them. I've just looked on amazon/ebay and you freely buy them. The failure here is not having a registered certificate system. If this had been a Labrador, the classic service/assistance dog, it would be highly unlikely she would have been approached. This looks more like a pet, than a service dog.
@paladestar97583 сағат бұрын
This is it. There's so many entitled a-holes trying to game the system, which, alas, sometimes results in extra scrutiny and scepticism towards people with genuine service animals. You'd think there'd be some kind of simple, yet irrefutable, system for checking. Like a verifiable certificate or card, or a real-time scan e.g. storing a 'service animal' true/false flag in the meta data associated with an animal's microchip in the central chip database. Animal is presented, staff perform a quick scan with a £20 chip scanner, which is hooked in to the central database with automatic API lookup, which returns whether or not the animal is a legitimate service dog.

Wow. A common reply to situations like this is to quote the current year to imply that progress has been made over time. Yet our local Asda played host to a well known local guide dog trainer shopping there and training new dogs there as he did so back in the mid 1990s and the staff were very welcoming and friendly towards him then. So we've actually gone backwards in a huge way in 2024 it seems. Asda train your staff, seriously.

Assistance dogs should be treated the same as guide dogs. Also if an assistance dog ever runs up to you and sits in front of you trying to get your attention, follow it, this means the person the dog belongs to needs help.

Worked for ASDA in Ware Hertfordshire for a time, one weekend they had someone come in and wheel out one trolley after another of booze I think they nicked the best part of £3000 and nobody did a thing, meanwhile they had a couple of petty jobsworths standing by the shopfloor to record on their little clipboards if any staff had a bit of loose change in their pockets as this was against the rules.

Surely, this shows that there is a need for an official service dog/animal registration organisation. It would stop this nonsense from happening all the time.

As someone who has gone into various companies as a Health and Safety consultant I have found in many cases that the levels of training where it even exists can be abysmally low. The trend is online learning and I don’t think its valid in many cases. Where there is a test at the end of the online training session this can often be done at home or in breaks and its hard to evidence that the test has been done by the person who should be doing it.

@pamelastoneman9343 Service dogs aren't just "guide" dogs. Many are so acutely trained, they can sense seizures before they occur and will guide the patient into a safe sitting position. They can also detect low blood sugar in diabetics and alert them to take precautions such as drinking some juice or having something to eat. Not all medical disabilities are visible ones.

Lack of staff education. This is poor management or leadership. This maybe similar to the two Metropolitan Policemen not being able to recognise a terrorist group. Leadership or management is lacking, negligent, discriminatory or just plain incompetent.

I haven't forgotten how they treated people during the COVID charade. Even after the mask rule had been lifted I had a train worker (woman ofc) telling me I needed to wear a mask. I told her to leave me alone or I'd film her and put her on KZbin and that shut her up. I could see her quickly trying to figure out an excuse to kick me off the train but she didn't have one and I had loads of witnesesses.

They are probably scared to confront a group of youths but go for easy pickings. Last year in ASDA a group were on bikes and scooters, staff did nothing but they stopped an elderly couple when something from George still had a tag on, the cashier didn't remove the tag. The secruity guard was hoping the couple were on the rob to feed her ego.

Serendipitously, I've just been talking to an Asda employee at my local corner store. She remarked that she hadn't seen me for ages and I replied that that was because I've been banned. Why? Well, you know how you offer me the choice of a reciept at the till, well 'security' regarded me as being "unreasonable" for not providing them with a reciept! She agreed that was a perfect example of the Asda 'vibe' these days. I added that, to add insult to injury, they ignore all complaints. All in all, a seemingly vile company for customer and employee alike.
