I was six when these girls were murdered. This could have happened to me a million times over. Back then, we were always in the alley, down the street with friends; me and my sister were inseparable, so we were always together. My heart just aches for these innocents. Rest in peace, little ones.

Both Phyllis and Deborah have siblings still living in Shelbyville that would love to clear up some things Lamont was misinformed about. They are both loved and missed terribly. I didn't get the chance to know them, but I watched my mother agonize over their deaths for years until she passed in '21. My mother, Phyllis's sister and Deborah's cousin, cried for them daily. One of her comforts in death was knowing she would see both Phyllis's and Debbie again. Even though, I didn't get to know them personally, they are my family. I will never let their story be forgotten. I have many cousins who feel the same. We will tell our children about Phyllis and Debbie. They will live on through us.

What a chilling story! It could easily have been any of us. In the '60's, we all played, unsupervised, all over the neighborhood, and in my hometown, there were cotton and maize fields with farm roads and trees in-between them. About a mile down the farm roads, there was an empty pasture, and beyond that pasture was a beach. We weren't supposed to play on the farm roads, and never ever go to the beach, but we all did. The boys would even go skinny dipping. Us girls would play with hermit crabs and fiddler crabs (tiny crabs with one large claw that looked sort of like a violin). We lived in a small town and didn't understand what our parents were worried about when they would warn us not to go off alone. We had no idea that murderous creeps even existed. These two little girls were probably as naive as we were. I hope they are resting in peace. Thank goodness they caught the guy and locked him up before he could hurt anyone else.

Tragic story, those poor girls went through hell. Requiescat in Pace Deborah and Phyllis. I'm glad there was justice done for them in the end. However, this brings up another notion. Our system failed Eddie as well, with a large family like this? It's guaranteed at least one kid is going to slip through the cracks. We're talking one of twelve kids. Had he actually been brought up properly or if the fostering system actually cared, this tragedy could've been averted and those two girls would still be with us today.

I'm an old man now. I was 7 years old back in 1966. I remember right around that time the middle 1960's I was playing by myself out in front of my home, a strange man tried to lure me into his car. He was 40 something, wore a hat and tie. I remember this like a dream. Something in my head told me to run and I ran home. I never told my parents. I wonder sometimes, what would have happened to me.

Yes, it is a terrible story. Thank you for shining light on it. 😢 It's so interesting to look back on, as the Town Dump was our playground too. It was a tiny town of 3500 in Massachusetts in the 60s. We'd go with our Dad every Saturday and it was a big deal lol. Dad enjoyed talking to the cronies and we'd run around to our hearts content. There were burning piles everywhere too - I can still smell the combo of household goods and tires, of all things. I couldn't fathom it today. Oh, and those poor little girls were killed on my 12th birthday 😢

I'm so glad that so much more is being done regarding mental health. We still have a long way to go. With all due respect, the severely mentally ill are NOT lazy. He most likely wasn't getting medicated, getting enough sleep, hallucinating, delusional, psychosis, homicidal ideation etc. He needed antipsychotic meds and extensive therapy.
