Good job mate. My school is next to Glen Waverley Station and i see lots of full brand new x-traps, hitachi's and comengs in the dock and at the station. I have been in the front of a comeng not an x-trapolis. Keep them coming and keep up the good work. Cheers

Hi, the trains do have GPS, mainly for the automated announcements. As for braking and station locations, it is purely down to our 'route knowledge'. Each driver has their own preference or unofficial markers where they will set up the brake for each location. There are no official 'apply brakes here' signs or such. Naturally, you can hit a platform on an up hill grade quicker than you would hit one on a falling grade. Weather conditions cause variations in approach speeds too.

Great video! part of my journey home from school, Auburn -> Heatherdale. I'm talking 1960s, and I certainly don't recognise much of the line as it is now! In my day Springvale Road crossing was right next to Nunawading station. I emigrated to Aus as a kid, but returned to England age 32 (over 30 years ago). Must try this line again next visit. Only been out as far as Box Hill by train in recent times, so I have seen the massive changes there since 1960s/70s.

im sure after experience you guys pretty much know when to brake and when each stations on each line come around. but how do you know when the next station is coming up and when is the best time to start braking? GPS or what not :)

I drive a few trains, and I hate driving the new X'Trapolis. When you use the horn, do your ears get killed? Mine do. My fav is the comeng, nice and quiet. They also have a beautiful horn sound.

I live on this line (in a house on the right just after the firat crossing at Blackburn) and we seem to have every train blowing its horn at least 6 times as they travel near us! It has become a nightmare! They even blow horns at 2am in the morning. We used to get about three or four trains an hour (fewer on weekend) blowing their horns once or twice, now we seem to get about 8 trains an hour blowing their horns 5 or 6 times! Thatmenas an increase of (max) 8 "toots" an hour to 48! Hell on earth!

You must be over the moon about the Blackburn Road level crossing having recently been removed. No more train horns at 2am in the morning, thank God for that!

Very interesting to see some footage of a few things which are no longer there; things such as the Blackburn Road level crossing, the Rooks Road level crossing, and the old Mitcham Station (plus the old rail siding at Mitcham which existed when the tracks were still at street level).

Not to mention, the Mitcham Road level crossing.

@indiglosyd Thanks for watching and posting a comment. The new station looks fantastic. From road level you hardly notice the rail line at all. The station is now located on the Melb side of Springvale road and has entry points from both sides of the road. The old level crossing was a pain in the rear for all parties. Far safer now. Thanks again.

You will have a few more new stations on your line when they finish Mitcham station. Love your footage, especially of the eastern track.

Blowing the whistle becomes second nature and it is a very important safety tool. Having said that, the little kid within me likes giving it a good blow every now and then...

@boeing180 Hi, thanks for watching and posting your comment. As for 'beeping', we have to by law. You'll notice that I do it at the white crosses on a post beside the line. These are called "Whistle Boards" and are fixed 400m prior to level and pedestrian crossings. The whistle is an important safety device and I couldn't start to count how many lives it has saved over the years. There are many people walking around today thanks to my use of the whistle. So every 'con' has a 'pro'.

I really wish they would build something similar in werribee, the level crossing is a real hotspot

@darijoe Hi there, thanks for your comment on my video. And thanks for detecting my typo, which has now been rectified. The automated announcement was a tad late. Have you ever stood on a platform at FSS when the announcement says "Belgrave train departing stand clear" when the platform is clear and the said Belgrave train is half way across the viaduct to Southern Cross. I shake my head. LOL. Thanks again, Cheers!!!

OMG! I couldn't imagine bouncing out to Werribee on one. I'd need a racing harness. LOL. Actually, they're restricted to 90kph at the moment.

Bit "old hat" now - the track has changed heaps (no crossing across Blackburn Road anymore and most of trip is via below ground tunnel. No more train whistles keeping the Blackburn residents awake and all is so silent now you would not know trains are running. It is nice to see old videos where everyone's faces are not "blurred out". Oh for the good 'ol days before Political correctness.

Mitcham station looks really different. I only went past Mitcham once when I was like 8 or something. It looks so weird compared to what I usually see. I dont usually travel past Blackburn though
