It sounds like Verne made the same mistake with mulligan that he did with Hogan years later.

😂😂😂 You definitely don't know very much about how the territories worked back then.

BJM came back early 1970s to Indianapolis for Dick The Bruiser & Wilbur Snyder to team with Blackjack Lanza & Bobby Heenan. Chicago which was run and owned by Bruiser , Snyder, Verne, and Wally Karbo had The Blackjacks booked on all or most of The Chicago shows. BJM v Verne Gagne for Verne's AWA title headlined a Chicago show then The Blackjacks vs Bruiser & Crusher, Soldier Field 1972.

Verne must have known he couldn't utilize Mulligan as a stage hand extra forever! If not he deserved to lose Mulligan. You cant expect the largest physical body on your roster to stay content putting the ring together and reffing.

I had no idea that he played NFL football. I’ve never seen him out of character before he’s not what I expected.

The moral of the story is verne is a tyrant and dictator but he is the one who actually got mulligan booked for vince mcmahaon SR

Blackjack Mulligan was a big draw in the Mid-Atlantic area. Tough as nails. One of the best.

I was not a big fan of the AWA back in the 1970s. Verne Gagne would put himself on top and he would not give a whole lot of opportunities for young wrestlers to develop into main eventers. There were no secondary titles for young wrestlers to chase while developing their name. Young wrestlers were stuck in mid-card purgatory until they left for another territory. The AWA needed their own version of the Intercontinental title or the US title to give developing wrestlers something to compete for while they were developing their name.

I like the version we got in Chicago better, Verne's AWA combined w Bruiser's Indianapolis promoition. The main stars we had were Bruiser and Crusher, and we liked it that way. Never cared for Verne, by the time I was a fan he was just a fat bald old man who looked ridiculous doing his dropkicks. Even young I knew it was his gig and he made himself champion when there were so many better options.

He should be thankful Lanza didn't care that he stole his whole gimmick.

Vince Sr gave him the Blackjack Mulligan gimmick. He also did a helluva lot more with it than Lanza whose ringwork was mediocre and promos were so dull they might as well have been in esperanto.

@@Rjensen2 Lanza is older and was a nation wide star a generation before mulligan entered the business. Infact, Wyndham would job to Lanza as a young trainee in Minneapolis
