I have just been going through a bit of a losing streak. After going through a winning streak. Two sessions in a row, the dealer just kept getting unbelievable hands. So many blackjacks and 21s it was insane. It didn't matter how well I kept count. The "luck" was just all with the dealer. But two weeks ago, the luck was all with me. No matter how I played, I just kept winning hand after hand. So it equalled out this month. But, it was all a valuable learning experience. It taught me that variance is a bi*ch. All you can do is play your best and try to minimize your losses when the cards just aren't going your way. And remember that variance goes both ways. You just have to protect your bankroll as you ride through a downturn, secure in the knowledge that eventually it will swing in your favor - and when it does, don't be afraid to put the bets out there.

Basic strategy played perfectly results in a slight edge to the house. (It varies based on the rules in play.) You will lose more hands than you will win. If you count cards, you will STILL lose more hands than you will win. The difference is that counting cards gives you some information that can swing your odds on some individual hands in your direction, at which you increase your bets. But, as Colin notes, you can have a hefty losing streak even when the count is in your favor. Each session you play is an independent event. But within each session, it is not because you are allowed to see (and count) the hands that have been played. No longer random; the hands are dependent events, depending on the previous cards played. This all goes away with the shuffle, which is why the count reverts to zero. You're starting over. I play near-perfect basic strategy, somewhere around 99%. I'm not a card counter. I should only lose a few hands more than I win in any session, right? Wrong. Because of variance, I once lost 11 hands in a row. Why? Because it happens. It is the long run, when you can move the odds in your favor by changing your bets based on the count is the only way to shift the long run towards your favor.

If losing 60% of your hands and only winning 40% is considered “few”… then… 1st- you MUST play perfectly 100% of the time or else your adding to the HOUSE edge. As you know the money is in the doubles and splits- but only when you should. That’s where you overcome the 60% of the losing hands money wise. Also, the 20-40% pay raise in deviations are KEY! 60% of your gain from deviations occur in the top 3 (out of more than 100 playing deviations)… insurance being THE MOST profitable deviation; when to stay on a 16 vs 10 being the second most profitable. Otherwise, plan to give the house &0.50 cents on every $100 in the long run. Even more if you don’t play perfect basic strategy 🤷🏼♂️

@richdouglas23112 жыл бұрын
A lack of understanding of variance--and random, independent events, is why some people think they can develop a "system" to beat games like craps, roulette, and slot machines. You can't. Variance can cause you to come out ahead sometimes, just as it can cause your losses to be greater than expected. The same goes for "hot" and "cold" tables/machines/wheels/etc. No such thing, except in hindsight. What has happened before has no bearing on what it going to happen. We humans have evolved to seek out patterns in information. It makes us more predictively accurate, which means we're more likely to succeed at something. It's the basis for hunting, agriculture, and science. But sometimes random events form in ways that look like patterns. They're not, but we construct them anyway. (There is a whole school of thought around us forming these "paradigms.") Casinos take advantage of this. For example, if you approach a roulette table, you'll likely see a sign posted with the most recent numbers produced by the wheel. This is put there to encourage you to see a pattern (that doesn't exist) and cause you to bet accordingly. (The casino really doesn't care what you bet ON, only that you bet.) "Hey, 6 hasn't been hit yet, I'll bet on 6," they want you to think. But because each spin of the wheel--assuming the wheel is true--is a random event, that 6 is no more or less likely to come up than any other number. (And the switch the wheels often enough to that even if one had a proclivity to produce a particular outcome more frequently, it would be gone before anyone had a chance to calculate it.) No hunches, no feelings, no sense of a hot table/machine/wheel/etc., not even a well-calculated chi-square analysis is going to help you discern the future.

@stevenhelgason81902 жыл бұрын
It is ideal to start fresh from the top of a shoe of course. But if you miss a few early rounds, you can still jump in, especially if the penetration of the game is very good. You just have to pretend the unseen cards in the disposal tray aren't there and are instead behind the cut card in the shoe for your remaining deck estimations. It's usually not worth it if there is more than a full deck gone though. Typically, if I come to a table with a few cards in the tray (like a half deck perhaps), I'll watch a couple rounds. And if the running count becomes a bit positive, I'll go ahead and sit down.

My advice is to build your bankroll by continuing to put money into it. The micro stakes bankroll is more likely to disappear then grow, when you start with a 1000 and it's impossible to find a game with less then a $15 min. To spread a conservative 1-6 or $15-$90, the risk of ruin is just through the roof. because on your max bet you are putting out 10% of your bankroll on a tiny 2-3% advantage. So a great way to build that bankroll is. 1. Wong in at true 1.5 or better, wong out below true 1 only playing good hands dramatically reduces your ror

Disregard the advice. It's not what's in your hand, but the overall count of the shoe that matters. If the overall count remains negative, keep hitting. If the count turns slightly positive, like + 0.5 or better, then stand. Sounds like that advice was from early round single deck strategy from back in the day.

I've experienced variance from the start, and I'm not sure my bankroll can survive it unless it changes soon. I can play for hours and barely come out ahead, or get killed and lose hundreds in a couple hours. I play mostly 6 deck shoes, because single or double deck tables have either too many other players or too high minimums. I decided to play heads up with the dealer on 6 deck shoes whenever possible. So far, heads up just means I lose more, faster. The emotional beating during heads up is even worse lol. I believe in the math, and I love card counting, 'm just concerned I'm about to get knocked out of the game before the math turns in my favor.

Hi, I really hope you see this comment but on the basic strategy chart it only shows hard counts up to 17, what if I have like a hard 18 or 19? Also starts at 8 so not including if I get like a 3 and a 4 to come out as a hard seven
@stevenhelgason81902 жыл бұрын
It goes without saying that you always stand if you have hard 17 or more. And it goes without saying to hit a hard 8 or less. This is why most charts don't show this (but some do). There are few exceptions, such as... there are occasional times when you might double an 8 against a 5, 6 or even a 4 upcard. If rules allow surrender sometimes there is a correct play to surrender a hard 17 - like against an ace.

@@noskpain2792 You surrender only if the dealer has an Ace. This is what the charts say. I assume because under H17 rules, the dealer has a better shot at improving a soft 17 hand if not forced to stand. It'd be a mathematically close play anyway.

@@MrZzstop When he says ‘if you don’t do variants and you only do normal card counting’, I think he means deviations, not variance. Chezro- if you meant deviations (or indices), then you will basically win less. It is possible to have a winning game without using deviations, but you are more reliant on good table rules, and you are essentially giving yourself a pay cut. If you don’t want to learn them all to start with, focus on the ones that have the biggest impact and occur the most often (eg the ones that apply at any pos or neg TC plus the insurance deviation) Once you’ve got them, add in the ones that occur at TC -1 and +1. Then keep adding more, good luck!

@@billmoran6 Yes, taking insurance on a count of +3 or higher (6 deck) being number 1, followed by standing on 16 vs 10 with a positive count . Number 3 is if you have a hand of 15 against the dealer’s 10, you should stand at a count of +4 or higher. If nothing else learn those three.

The cards coming out are great cards. Then obviously once the count changes as lower cards come out later in the shoe, the count can go positive but it's, in my mind a false positive because the high value cards have already gone at the start. Something that really struck me watching this video is just how often language like this gets misused to rope people into sketchy business decisions. "It'll work out in the end, just stick it out!" ONLY works if you can accurately and perfectly identify what the math is, like in card counting. This channel is awesome for reminding us so often about perfect play and bankroll management because those are just as important as the strategy. The law of large numbers will always work out, but if you don't have absolute control over what that large number is, I guarantee the casino does. They're really good at it.

I don’t think you can get that if they cut off 2 decks from a 6 deck shoe unless you really step up your bets on the plus counts. You won’t last long playing that way. I was spoiled by the excellent conditions I got in the 70’s and 80’s. I got well over 5% from those games. I still suffered some horrendous luck even with those conditions. I lost 20 consecutive hands twice. One time I had 2 blackjack blackjack ties. I had another 14 consecutive loss to start a session that ended up being a winning session. I had a dealer make 7 blackjacks against me out of 10 hands. I had a session where I won all my insurance bets. I had 4 consecutive blackjacks. You are exactly correct. Unless you can keep more money off the table when you don't have an edge, your overall advantage is pretty miniscule, even assuming proper play and bet spread.
@emmanuelvacakis44632 жыл бұрын
@@stevenhelgason8190 this is why the simple plus minus strategy isn’t good enough anymore. You need a strategy that can uncover more advantage situations and help prevent you from raising your bets when you actually have a disadvantage. You need a strategy that will help you play all of the hands more accurately. You simply have to keep a separate count of Aces for this. The player advantage is based on the total possible combinations of converting stiff hands into pat hands. Fewer possible combinations help the player. Removing a 5 from the deck eliminates 5 combinations. But removing a 2 from the deck eliminates only 2 combinations. Drawing a 2 can’t ever produce a 19,20, or 21. Drawing a 2 can only produce a 19 when the dealer hits a soft 17 only. When playing a 6 deck shoe game, you can have many more 5vs gone than 2s. At these times, you can have an advantage even if your simple plus minus count is negative. You will also be hitting 16 vs a 10 when you should be standing. You need a 5 and only a 5 to beat a 20. The reverse is also true. You can have a plus count , but because more 2s are out than 5vs, you will have a disadvantage when you think you have an advantage. You will stand on 16 vs a ten when you should be hitting. Look at basic strategy for single deck. You stand on 77 vs a 10 even though it’s just 14, yet you hit 15 and 16. This makes sense because your odds of getting a 3rd 7 is not very good. Only a 7 will beat a 20. Of course you would surrender if you could. But playing a 6 deck shoe game, you will hit. I played primarily against a single deck and could remember the some exact cards that had been played. When my count was even or close to even, I stood on 15 vs a ten when 6s had been played. This helped me reduce my losses on these bad hands that come up often. This concept also occurs when the dealer shows a 9, but to a lesser extent because it takes 2 cards to beat a 19.
