Quick tip for all airbrushes (spray guns), get a bottle of mineral oil. Use it to lubricate the needle (and thus, the internal seals) occasionally. I usually just dip the tip of the needle in, enuf to get a drop on the end, then use my fingers to coat the needle in a THIN layer. Helps keep the trigger action and paint flow smooth, as well as preserving the seals for longer use. It's a cheap alternative to proprietary lubes and is non reactive (won't cause fisheyes or delamination) with most paints or clears I've (or other professionals) ever put thru an AB or full sized spray gun for automotive or illustration painting (from inks to 2 part polyurethane clears). One bottle will likely last a lifetime. You can find it in the pharmacy section in most stores.

I got a very similar kit which came with a dual action brush for my students to experiment with. It’s not bad and the fact that it’s quiet is great. The low pressure does mean that there is a steep learning curve regarding how things your paints need to be. With it being so cheap it removes the pressure/fear of not being able to use it properly.

I just got one the other day for £30.99 off eBay having seen an ad on farcebook for them (which is probably a scam and why I didn't buy directly from the linked site) and as a complete airbrush novice, I can't fault it. I bought it blind without reading any reviews about them, so this is me now looking up reviews after the event hoping I didn't make a mistake. I got it mainly to touch up damaged areas of clear or tinted lacquer on saxes as the thinned down lacquer can be applied, feathered, cut and blended into the rest of the surrounding lacquer far more evenly and seamlessly than using a paintbrush and dries much quicker too. I've also been using it just with neat isopropyl or acetone to both clean the nozzle and cup while in situ and to degrease internal screw threads, small electric motors and whatnot. Mine also has two additional larger capacity clear plastic reservoirs included with it as the small cup needs filling up frequently when using it on full blast. I could fit a hose for it to use for compression testing for leaks as it's a conveniently sized and ultra portable compressor. The instruction sheet lists the various thread sizes which is good. Here's the link: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/383674041141

I never had much success airbrushing with mine, but i do use it for blowing the resin off of my resin-prints before cleaning them. I also use it for blowing the cleaning fluid off my prints as well. Nice timing on this one, because I got one of these as a gift and I’m new to airbrush so I’ve been binging all sorts of videos. Mine looks exactly like yours but it’s a double action and looks like it cost closer to $50-$60, but what little of it I’ve had time to use I can say it’s probably exactly as you say besides the double action trigger. It’s a nice little kit and seems very beginner friendly, the high price point has always kept me away from these.

@@BlackJackLegacy absolutely, and we'll have time to level up for better ones once we have tried if we like and we want to learn more. So how would you use a dual action airbrush w. this? (Sorry - didn't understand what you were saying w. removing the air valve. If removing that will it enable me to use dual action or will it never be able?)
@BlackJackLegacy2 жыл бұрын
Normally with an airbrush you have a dual action. Pushing down controls the airflow and pulling back controls the paint flow hence dual action. With this one blocking off the air completely will put a build up of back pressure on the compressor as it has no auto switch off or tank to fill. Therefore it’s recommended to use a single action airbrush which is paint flow only and the air can flow freely all the time. You can remove the valve to make it single action and suitable with this compressor or you can fit it back in and use with a bigger compressor with a pressure switch off in the future.

Ok so with both reviews I guess the first one you reviewed seems abit better for the money as you get a bigger kit now. This one seems fine but from what I am told duel action is better.
@BlackJackLegacy4 жыл бұрын
Dual action means you can control air flow and paint flow at the same time. It’s better if you have a good quality airbrush as the cheaper ones have little airflow control and act like more of an on/off switch. If you’re trying to paint to a high standard with an airbrush ignore these and spend £200+ on a compressor and good airbrush however if you just want to prime and basecoat don’t be tricked into thinking you need to spend that same money. Sometimes you just need to basics to get the basics done.

@BlackJackLegacy Жыл бұрын
If the paint isn’t coming out then it’s normally a blockage in the small nozzle. Even when you think you’ve cleaned it (and sometimes because cleaning it dislodges bits of dried paint) some can get stuck in the nozzle. Double check this as if no paints coming through generally that’s the issue.

@@BlackJackLegacy nope, even changed the noozle, did wome testing, I think I may have unaligned something because now the paint cup starts bubbling but I still check to remove any cloth
@BlackJackLegacy Жыл бұрын
If it’s bubbling it’s because there’s a blockage somewhere and the air is blowing back into the cup. The same thing happens if you put your finger over the end and stop the air coming out. Maybe your needle is bent. Try rolling it on a table and see if it’s straight or bent. A bent needle will block the nozzle too.

@@BlackJackLegacy I wasn't expecting such a quick reply, that's much appreciated. This is the first time I've used it so there shouldn't be any paint in there to begin with (I tried the water first, then the paint) but maybe there is something else blocking it. I'll give it a clean and see how it goes. Thanks very much!

You’re welcome - happy to help. It might just be dirty from manufacture possibly. It’s worth giving it a good clean if the air is getting into the cup something is blocking the air flow coming out of the end.

I’ve got this same model, looks identical, but mine is dual action. One problem I have been getting is tip drying. It may be because I’m still learning to use it, but I am being careful to always put out air at the beginning and end, rather than stop while there’s paint coming out... The advice I’m finding everywhere is that due to the very low psi, I need to thin the paints a lot more than I think I should. Vallejo surface primer seems to not like that very much, but I see you used it fine in your video. How much do you thin your primer? And did you get any issues with tip drying when using this airbrush to spray varnish?
@BlackJackLegacy3 жыл бұрын
First off just checking your compressor stops automatically when you’re not pressing down on the trigger. If it doesn’t then that’s where a lot of these cheaper ones burn out - that’s why the instructions say single action only. As for thinning I use Vallejo air brush thinner and I thin down primers and paints even when they say air paints. I find they perform better when a little thinner, give less blocks and go on great. Dry tips tend to be when you’re really lightly pulling back on the needle to let a small amount of paint through and the air flow drys the paint before it sprays. This can happen if the paint is a little thicker too. It’s not always an issue as long as you just keep an eye on it and wipe the tip as you go but thinning further would help.

@@BlackJackLegacy Wow, that was a quick reply! It definitely stays on (as in, makes noise) even when I'm not pushing on the trigger. Then air comes out when I push on the trigger (not gradually, though, definitely on-off... not sure if it's supposed to be gradual... from the way people are using airbrushes in tutorials I guess not). But I switch it off when I'm not actively painting, so I think it's going to be okay burn-out wise. I must be getting something wrong when spraying the Vallejo Surface Primer though. At one point, it was basically getting blocked up every 10 seconds or so, which made it very frustrating. And when it "blocks up", there's still paint coming out but very little, so I am guessing the diagnosis for that is dry/blocked up tip. I tried just cleaning the needle with my fingers but that only unblocked it for a few seconds, so each time that happened, I ended up disassembling and cleaning the airbrush thoroughly, which takes a long time. Then I mixed more thinner in and put the paint back in the cup, and tried again and... again it blocked up after 10 seconds. It was quite frustrating! But I'm going to try to thin the paints even more and see if that helps!... Do you thin varnishes to get them through this airbrush?
@BlackJackLegacy3 жыл бұрын
Happy to help mate - ask away! It sounds like the pint is too thick. High pressure with bigger compressors will push the paint out even if a little thicker but at lower pressures you need to thin it. Even with my more expensive airbrush I paint at about 25psi so still thin down the paint. I find the black primer thins down great but the ghost grey primer I use I find is sometimes a little “rubbery” if that makes sense. I take an old bottle and premix some thinned down primer so I always have a bottle ready to use rather than trying to get it right each time I prime. Varnish I tend to thin a little but not so much.

@@BlackJackLegacy Thank you! I'll try thinning more... Looks like I'm back to miniature painting 101... "THIN YOUR PAINTS"... Airbrush painting with a portable compressor 101? "THIN YOUR PAINTS EVEN MORE" :-P

I made this video a little while back about thinning paints for airbrushing - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX-5gKVjmLR9eq8 - see if that helps to visually give you some tips

Hey man thanks for the video. Do you think it’d be okay to roughly highlight space marines power armour?

Absolutely - I painted a full army using this airbrush with a basecoat colour and a lighter highlight airbrushed from above.

@@BlackJackLegacy so it arrived today! As soon as I press the white button to turn it on, air immediately flows out of the nozzle regardless of whether I have my finger on the trigger - is this what it should be doing? Is that what single action means? I really appreciate your help! 😁
@BlackJackLegacy3 жыл бұрын
Yes that right. It will be air but no paint. The paint only comes out as you pull back on the trigger. That’s why it’s single action. Dual action will allow you to control air and paint flow.

Great video Andy. As a newbie airbrusher would you recommend this or the other cheap mains one? Space and noise aren't really an issue, but do like the portability of this one. For priming and base coating only do you see much of a difference in coverage between the two?
@BlackJackLegacy3 жыл бұрын
Hi Toby. I think over all if you can get them both for the same price the mains powered one is probably better quality however the price seems to be climbing so if the battery one is cheaper I think you'd still enjoy using the battery one. For the basic priming and basing there's little, if anything, to distinguish from the finish
@tobywebb3 жыл бұрын
@@BlackJackLegacy thanks, I've gone for the battery one as it was £28 on eBay. The mains one was £38 but the battery one gives me more options as a beginner (where I can use it, noise levels etc).
