As a Lumix owner (so not biased), the motion seems far more organic on the Blackmagic. I thought it was the read out speed but this video proves it's not that. The Lumix almost feels jittery. I've noticed an improvement with b-raw on the Lumix for sure. I'd love to see a comparison between b-raw on both cams to se if it is still that drastic a difference. I'd love to know Blackmagic is doing that Lumix isn't...

@@solarion33good thought but I have an S1H and shoot with manual glass only and the movement is jittery. It’s better in braw but still not as good as blackmagic. From my research, Lumix and Blackmagic handle noise reduction differently. Blackmagic does each frame individually while Lumix does several frames at once. It’s spatial vs temporal. It’s the only thing I could find that would explain it. But I could be wrong of course!

I used both on a recent shoot my conclusion is this. The black magic file sizes don’t justify the slight difference in quality especially when you’re just going to put it on a platform that compresses the heck out of it. Second, the autofocus and versatility of the s5iix have me reaching for it to create more often and with the advantage of taking stills on set

Confirms what I've noticed with my Pocket 6K versus my S5II (which I wanted to replace the Pocket as the go to hybrid camera that rules them all). The S5II looks like you attach a lens to your iPhone and record in Apple Log and then grade it. The Pocket 6K looks like a compact travel Arri Camera - if you don't care about no IBIS and no Autofocus (I don't care about either). There's something very pleasant and natural and filmic about Blackmagic versus the S5II and the FX30 and FX3 (had both). Also, the greens are so weird on the S5II. Yikes... And BRAW is so nice and easy to grade. I've heard it multiple times... "get Blackmagic Video Assist and record RAW on the S5II" - but what's the point of all of that if what you need is one box to do it all. Once you start attaching stuff to it it's no longer one package. That way, if I carry something else with me, I'd rather get a RS4 and Lidar for the Pocket.

I had a S5IIX for a few months and I did like the camera, but the BMCC 6K is just a different beast in my eyes. KZbin compression makes it a little bit harder to see the real difference between them.

I've been using Lumix cameras for several years, currently using a S1 (pre-ordered when announced) because I found it hard to justify the the upgrades to the S5II and expecting a new S1 generation. Meanwhile I bought a BMPCC4k, and at the end of last year a BMCC6K, although I can match pretty well the footage the Blackmagic cameras usually give a more three-dimensional effect and better color separation, you can also get easily the look you're after. But for run'n'gun the Lumix is hard to beat.

So close, but my instinct tells me the BM takes it overall. Second shot it appears there is a focusing error on the S5II causing the foreground to be out of focus (noticeably on the fence and lettering on your shirt)... the BM is focused correctly, but falls off nicely into the background. Thanks for putting this together.

Both look amazing. From what I see the BM has better highlight rolloff and overall a more "organic" look thats not as sharp as the s5. BM also seems a bit warmer with a magenta push slightly.

i’m confused as to why the highlights would look so different. the lumix highlights on the subject are totally warm instead of white, yet the rest of the image is really similar to bmpcc. so if the images are both white balanced, what’s causing the lumix to have such warm highlights? is basically there a highlight roll off/look baked in?

There are indications that the sensor on the BMCC 6k FF is the Sony IMX410, which is implemented in the Panasonic S1h, S1, S5, and S5x, Kinefinity MAVO LF, DJI Ronin 4D, Sigma FP, and Zcam F6. It's interesting that you can have so many different looks from the same sensor. Although, differently than the other companies, Blackmagic has the advantage of developing their own raw codec (Braw) and being an end-to-end color science company.

If BM added AF to their machines, id cop in a heartbeat. BUT for me that shoots dancers...that shit is a hassle. The Lumix is stunning if ppl know what they're doing. But u really see peoples skill level if they know how to really pull out the best in gear tho in color grading. Both look great to me.

They both look good but the Cinema 6k pulls ahead of the S5ii. It seems to have more resolution even sharpness isn’t always needed but the strong BRAW codec simply has more information. I get 5.9k from my S1 with BM Video Assist at 150MB/s which is good, but the Cinema 6k is 300-600MB/s. So one camera can be for longer shoots to reduce storage. I’m keeping the Cinema 6k and knowing BM, they will add more features to the camera later, even more frame rate maybe.

I think if you want the absolute best possible image, and are ok with working for it, BMCC 6k is king. If you want a TON of convenience, and portability, S5II is easier to use. Truly we live in an age of wonders, when you could get either one of them for around 1600. This is exactly the choice I have been looking at, BMCC 6k vs S5II vs ZV-E1

Are you sure that the S5 has a micro 4/3 sensor ? I’m sure it’s Full Frame because I have both the OG S5 Full frame and GH5 (Micro 4/3) .

They are actually both using the exact same Sony sensor. The difference in resolution is because of the IBIS on the S5. The BMCC6K also has an OLPF that BM added. The color science/processing is then the main difference between the cameras.

The blackmagic is recognized by its highlights, the reflections are very marked, I have a bbm6kpro and that's the only thing I don't like about them! that does not degrade the highlights but rather burns them a little!

Unless you post both cameras with no color correction, there's no point to this comparison. The footage from both cameras has obviously been color corrected....the highlights on the forehead, shoulder and arm are way warmer on the S5II...unless you shot with an on camera lut, there's no way this is the way it looks right out of the camera.

I feel like it's better than looking at log footage though and there's no "standard" for comparing cameras. This could easily be solved by exporting a few 1 second clips to personally grade and test. Could help boost personal lut sales too since they can be tested with source material.

the people replying with a A/B didn't even watch the whole video 🤣. The BlackMagic had a slightly better characteristic to it, But I think the shot sitting on the bleachers looked clearly better on the S5ii. I can see a lot of noise on the blackmagic shot, not sure if it's because of the ISO. Would be good to show camera settings in the next camera test!

looks like you need to spend a bit more time researching how to workout correctly - maybe consider getting a real personal trainer and not KZbin as a source and also spend more time looking at how to colour grade. you pushed panasonic highlights way too warm
