So Black Magic did just release more Raw options which seem much better than DNG Raw. Not as universally accepted as REDCode as of now but we'll likely see updates on editing software. So Raw may now become the common setting for the BMPCC4k.

The Red looks “better” as far as looking more filmic right out of the gate. But it doesn’t look $18,700+ better, that’s for sure. Especially since I feel like you can get the BMPCC 4K to look like the Red in post-production; if not better. Blackmagic has democratized and revolutionized the filmmaking industry. The Blackmagic is so easy to grade in davinci resolve - esp when shooting in raw. When you take the price into account, the clear „winner“ is the BMPCC4K - but of course the Red is just an amazing workhorse in a production environment. 😊

Everybody says that of course and you would think that color should not be an issue in any situation if you shoot raw, but I am getting incresingly worried about the way the P4K renders the color red. You could see it very clearly that in the teachers strike footage everything red had a strong magenta tint. To the point where it was actually really bothering. I have seen this in some other videos as well and I have a feeling that it affects the greens as well as skin tones negatively. I want to like this camera so bad but...

Sweet comparison, and the colors on the RED look really pleasing VS the BMPCC4K! The only issue I have with your video is giving the RED a pro for having an articulating screen. The 4.7" RED monitor cost $1,450USD and the 7" monitors cost over $2.5K, while at least the Black Magic comes with a monitor in the first place. You could buy an Atmos Ninja V or a Feelworld F5 for a cheaper articulating screen solution.

It's so lightweight and easy to hide, ahah! As a female director I love being able to have this grab and go camera that I gives me so much amplitude to work with in post! Because the BMPCC4K whomps cameras in it's similar price range simply due to the 12-Bit RAW internal recording capability. Everything else is shooting compressed formats in 8-bit. Comparing grape juice to a vineyard. It depends on the projects you're shooting though, and the required turnaround times and delivery avenues. Sometimes, other more compressed format cameras are a better choice for a given shoot. Editing and grading 4K RAW footage requires a lot of horsepower.

I agree with the general statement, but the GH5 offers 10-Bit with up to around 400 mbit/s 4K footage, with V-Log. It is indeed great for color grading. Of course RAW is superior, but still, very usable @@MudreFilms

You know I disagree, I haven't seen any footage which is actually better than the 'lower spec' (in terms of pure image quality) cameras. For starters, usability impacts the end result because it's so much more complicated to get a decent shot that a Sony would get in 2 mins. Secondly, the colour science is always slightly off with BM cameras, even URSA's aren't quite there personally. It's just annoyingly wrong. Reviewers talk about the dynamic range but then the colour grade always sucks, unlike the RED. I wouldn't send out a Sony clip like that BM clips. Sensor size does impact aesthetic and I think this slightly loses the mark in terms of a tiny sensors. Some of these are subjective of course. But I think it's important to have accuracy that can then be subjectively changed later, like with the RED. The BM obviously struggles with this. People talk about the ProRes because it's a pro feature but people seem to struggle to make it work. It always looks stylised and probably not because that's the intention. It's sort of better but I just don't think it quite pulls it off. I'm not bashing on it because I do think it's an interesting camera but the whole vineyard comment is just silly because it looks rubbish next to a RED.

One thing to note is that the F stop needs to be recalculated for the BMCP 4K , f2.0 is equal to f4.0 on a 35mm sensor for example. So 50mm f2.0 is actually 25mm f4.0 on the bigger sensor! So I doubt you had them on the same F stop @ 3:36

The Red has something like an „Infrared light“ filter built in. The black magic not. So if you are use an ND Filter That dont stop that or something like an infrared light filter the colours on black magic shift in an not so sexy way.

In my experience the Pocket4K needs IR cut. Was that part of your setup as well? That would most likely help on the greens you experience is "dirty". You can notice the jacket on the dude to the left in the shot at 17:10 has this strong magenta cast. IR Cut, Fixed!

Perhabs you should to shoot in raw and then use Davinci Color Management / ACES conversion for BMPCC4K material for better results. But I totally agree that BM still can't achieve good color conversion math like Red did it in IPP2 or ARRI in their cameras. Since 2012 year. This is sad. Especially if we know that BM makes their software that contains a lots of this math.

I prefer the RED footage from pretty much all examples but 7:18 is where it all comes home for me. The image from the RED is so much more dimensional, the skin shines and pops out against the background where the image from the Pocket Camera is much more flat. I'm not sure what's responsible for that but it doesn't look like something you could compensate for in a grade. Anyway, I'm just another dreamer here; currently using and loving the P4K and REDs are way out of my price range. That said, glad to know $25K does buy you quality.

FINALLY!, GREAT Comparison Boss. i knew the BMPCC4K would outperform that particular RED sensor and internal processing. As I've been demonstrating and Stating, Price Does NOT=Equal image quality. it ALL about "Technological" Advancements. But some members of our Species you just can't teach ANYTHING!. As for the Comparison of image quality, The BMPCC4K would have even done better! if more care was taken with f-Stops / Exposure in a few of the shots. Now all the skeptics out there KNOW the TROOF! The reason the Black Magic Pocket 4k has weird greens and magentas is because it doesn't have a built in IR cut filter like most cameras. Slap an IR cut filter and you see a big improvemnet on the color.

I started off filming with the bmpcc. Eventually upgraded to the bmmcc. Sold those off and now I own the epic w. Was looking for a smaller low maintenance cinema camera to film with, when the epic w just wouldn't work b/c of its size or not having the manpower or time. Couldn't find anything in the price bracket of 1-3K for what I was looking for. UNTILLLLL the bmpcc4k. It's a great camera alongside the Red! ...To anyone who has a budget of 1K-4K and wants that cinematic/filmic look rather than a video look, Idk what you're doing if you aren't looking at the bmpcc4k! :-)

The "time to turn on" factor is something more camera reviewers need to mention. The c300mk2 I use turns on pretty fast, but often not fast enough. As a documentary camera they should really try to make it as close to instantly as possible.

If you are having trouble grading bmpcc4k footage I would recommend using the bmpcc4k to extended video lut. It is a really good starting point for grading.
