In this video I deal withe the results of a broken 3d printer. Somehow I still ended up with enough of the awesome model on the failed prints to turn it into some amazing terrain for my game IDOLS of TORMENT.

I had a very similar failure a while back. Pretty sure it was just because I had the plate too tight to the screen after a leveling and it was putting too much pressure on the screen. Worked for a while but the repeated nature of printing caused it to fail eventually. I could actually hear the glass creaking and groaning every time the plate went down but I totally didn't associate it with what was happening. I thought it was the FEP popping as the print was releasing. Stupid. Good news is that replacing the screen was relatively painless.

There was probably a bit of resin from a previous failed print still in the tank. When the buildplate descended to print the first layer, it pressed the chunk of resin into the screen and cracked it. Don't worry, sometimes the screen just breaks from overheating or something and there is no indication except for massive chunks of cured resin on your build plate :)

Jeremy, have you ever looked into Montana Gold Spray Paints? They sell a marble effect that you can just rattle can onto a model after you paint it. Looks awesome. It sprays in the marble veins for you in a random pattern.

I dig the contrast between the hellish figures and the heavenly figures. My favorite part is how their color palettes were inverted from the norm, since it's usually the angels that are all white and pure with the dark and messy appearance for the devils. It adds a lot to the worldbuilding to have them swapped and shows some of the chaos that erupted when heaven and hell collapsed into each other.

I broke my Mars screen like this once, it was a small bit of a failed print that had stuck to the FEP no more then 1mm or less of material, but that extra thickness was enough that when I started the next print, crack. now I always check with a scraper if there is any loose material at the bottom of the vat and relevel the plate every dozen prints.
@demon1103
@demon1103 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, that's what I do, I tend to need to stir up the resin in the vat before printing anyway, so while I do that I check the bottom if possible.

First off, you were one of the first channels I found that dragged me into the mini-painting world, and I am always glad when I see another video. Now.....that resin flew off and hurt your finger. Good thing it wasn't your EYES! Why not wear some eye protection next time? Cracked screens can be replaced. Damaged retinas? Not so simple. I want to continue watching your videos. Take care of your body so you can keep on making them! Oh, and this project turned out to be SPECTACULAR! The best part was seeing how excited you got over transforming a failure into a feature. Rock on.

Because my hand was protecting my eyes :) I also was using the tired and true turn away and close eyes technique at the same time. Honestly I'm pretty good about eye protection (I had a scratched retina while I was working in trades and it's awful) but this situation there was really no risk to the eyes.

Freaking cool! The hex staircase was a winning move. I also like to make use of failed prints, so making it into a statute is, in my opinion, is totally made of win. Sorry about your printer Jeremy. The way that broke, most likely cause was debris in the vat. Been very interested in your game and will be supporting it when it comes out. However, your description of the two realms collapsing in upon themselves was epic! Hooked. Great video, man

man this looks so awesome i frickin love it. The only Detail i personally would have liked are a ton of candles on the stairs like a "makeshift" Altar of sorts or a Magnet of some crazed worshippers or something like that. The Candles, for me, would reinforce that feeling of something godly, worth of praying to but in this case its a Prince of Hell, which is neat.

First off I love the fact that despite the failures of the print, you didn't scrap the project. You just decided to use what you had and build something else that was incredible looking. It was nice to see that even when what you want to do does not work out, you don't have to give up. Even a mistake can create something amazing. Second, I love the builds for these hellscapes. They are by far one of my favorite builds you do. As soon as I'm not buried under terrain for Stargrave and This Is Not A Test I plan on taking a shot at constructing some of my own hellish terrain using your style as a point of reference. Maybe use it in Reign In Hell (and eventually Idols of Torment). And what little you've talked about the game REALLY has my interests peaked. Gives me Donte's Inferno and Paradise Lost meets Heavy Metal and Beksinski aesthetics feels. Can't wait to see it when it's done.

Yeah, the manufacturers don't like to advertise it, but because of the way the print is basically ripped off the screen a few hundred times per model, those screens are more or less a consumable. If mechanical stress doesn't get them, the lcd itself will fail after about 200-800 hours of printing. The manufacturer might sell a replacement, or you can ask on Reddit. They are usually just normal lcd's made by sharp.
