There is nothing wrong with saying it's a kids show. It's when you use that as an excuse for lazy, unengaging storytelling is when that is a problem.

What did Man of Action do? But for Teen Titans Go, I'll still say it to them, but their problem is not understanding what worked about the original (mainly because they didnt watch the original) using lame idiot comedy, and hollow plot lines.

The problem is simply that for the most part, USA culture for some dumb reason just doesn't give kids shows enough credit that they deserve. Japan definitely does, and I'd bet that their grownups dont get degraded for liking Super Sentai & Kamen Rider. (Heck, they have so many special events for their superhero shows that I wish we did for ours!) But here? If you like that stuff, people will label you as "childish," and that it's a kids show, therefore you shouldn't watch it. Which is NOT the case, the people of US need to understand that Power Rangers, as well as other quality kids shows, are capable of telling good stories with mature elements that grownups can appreciate as well.

I wouldn't know about that, there is the stigma of being an otaku and NEET. But I do agree, Japanese kids shows tend to treat the kids more like adults and actually have good writing, acting, and adult themes. It's quite a change from the U.S.'s hyperprotective parenting culture that sadly treats it's children as if they were all special needs. I've met too many parents who constantly say certain things are just "too hard" for their children, despite their children's noticeable interest. That and they don't even attempt to explain or aid their children in understanding this "difficult" concept/item/mechanic, they just take it away from them, basically forcing them to give up. The only show I have seen recently that deals more with mature themes than even "adult" shows, and does them well, is Avatar: The Last Airbender. I like it so much I properly capitalized it.
@kaijuguy19

So much this. Not to mention that some of the kid shows end up being more mature with some topics they show then most adult shows in the USA ironically.

Black Nerd Comedy The GloryXros It doesn't help that, frankly, the public eye seemed to have tuned out of Power Rangers after, say, the movie? You can find anyone who knows how cool Tommy as the Green or White Ranger was, but how many people even know who Kat is, much less that Jason returned or that there was a 2nd main cast in Turbo? We can tell people how great and mature In Space or Time Force were, but the public mentality is that the original 6 main cast and their episodes are the only ones that "matter", where they were, frankly, bland goody-goody teenagers. There's a tough stigma to break there, because that kid show storyline is all "the public" remembers or knows. That's credence to why we only hear about the original main cast getting news interviews, why Megaforce tried to be a modern version of MMPR, and why JDF was the poster boy to the Legendary Battle. It's not an ideal strategy to a long-time fan, but it's a perfect business strategy to work off of general public nostalgia goggles like that.

The people saying all that stuff (I'm one of them) grew up with the show themselves. But they realized something in the earliest seasons of the show that people who still like it didn't or just don't care about: Power Rangers is the ultimate cheese. It has everything Andre talked about. All the sci-fi elements, the fantasy, the action. But then it also had the Bulk & Skull moments, the D-movie special effects (let's face it, that shit wasn't even C-level) from japan. THAT is what the adults today remember, not the fighting and the cool things. When I think about Power Rangers, or when I watched a few of the episodes when they showed up on Netflix, that's what I saw. Pure camp. The dialogue was horrendous because it was about the lowest of the low in terms of production value. THAT's why PR is considered a childish brand. These aspects showed us that PR cannot tell "good stories with mature elements that grownups can appreciate/" The proof is more convincing than words from fanboys on the Internet. Now, that being said, I don't make fun of anyone for watching what they enjoy. Go on with your bad self, love you some Power Rangers or whatever else you want to watch. Just because I don't watch a show doesn't mean you can't. But I will take your opinion about quality TV a little less seriously if I find out you like Power Rangers. Just a little Unless your name is Andre Meadows and you make kickass videos on KZbin.

Honestly it's really quite true about the kids show label thing. Hell even it's original japanese counterpart no matter how violent, dark, or age inappropriate it may seem in America in Japan it's also a childrens show. I personally just can't stand how in america when most people think Children's television they immediately think dumbed down or intentionally lackluster in quality to be understood by children despite rare moments when there is solid and well delivered writing or theming. A lot of the PR series in the Mid to late 90's pretty much did that job fairly well and are still some of my personal favorites like In Space all the way to Time Force. That being said I haven't seen the fan film yet.

I expect that in the next couple of years, assuming of course that this movie does well, we WILL see Power Rangers taken more seriously. A big part of the reason the big superhero movies have had such a renaissance, beyond just being good films, is that people who grew up with those properties were moving into prominent positions as critics, movie reviewers, etc. What was really funny was seeing some of these same people balking at the idea of a Power Rangers film. But y'know, they were probably too old for it when it was big and still think of it as being just for kids. As the generation behind them, the generation who DID grow up with Power Rangers takes on more important roles, I think we could see it respected in the mainstream on a similar level. However, all that hinges on whether this reboot movie is good enough to inspire that kind of dedication. That's why it's so, so important that Saban and Lionsgate do this right. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Adi Shankar, the dude who made this awesome badass short film is well known for doing this kind of things in the past. From a Punisher comedy, to a scary retelling of Venom's origin, to an awesome Judge Dredd cartoon in the style of Ren & Stimpy, he mixes up different styles to create his own very original fan films. So yeah, of course we are never going to see a movie like this in theaters, Power Rangers is undeniably a kid's show, but that's the cool things about fan films; you can do anything you want, as over the top it might sound on paper.

Hey Chelsea! Yes, Power Rangers has had many dark elements over the years. Heck, even on an emotional level, Kimberly dumping Tommy in a letter was pretty thick for a "kids show." But that's all the more reason why it's interesting that it never gets seen as more than that. Cartoons have had way less dark elements than some seasons of Power Rangers and are seen as all ages, while Power Rangers have had death, destruction... the evolution of Bulk & Skull... and still, kids show.

Actually, I've seen all the seasons of Power Rangers, and there's a internet personal named Linkara who does this really good, personal retrospect of Power Rangers. He just did Jungle Fury. You should go check it out sometime. As for the fan film, I thought it was awesome, but it did not destroy how I see Power Rangers. Like you said, it may be time for Saban to actually make it more mainstream. One of the reasons that the Super Sentai series is still ongoing is because of the variety of the seasons, and consider that In Space brought viewers back and saved the show, it is possible to go beyond the cheesy kids show.

Thats easy just do what power rangers in space did and make darker, get rid of the bad one liners & a writer that can write character depth mixed in a episodic format. Make it dark but not so dark it crosses into PG13 territory. I think that one way they can still keep the child fan base and at the same time get older viewers interested.

The problem with Power Rangers is that it's too Japanese to appeal to a more mainstream Western audience. It's hard to make something dark when you have five multi-colored superheroes posing and roll calling during a fight. Marvel and DC heroes don't have this problem because they are Western heroes made with Western audiences in mind. It's the same reason why the Japanese Godzilla movies and even Ultraman are still perceived as cheesy. And quite frankly, turning Power Rangers into Halo or Call of Duty like in that short film just isn't gonna work.
@AllieRX
@AllieRX 10 жыл бұрын
Another thing to point out is that Power Rangers is limited to its source material (Super Sentai). They have to make sure that the show is good while using the Sentai footage. Marvel and DC have a lot more creative freedom. That's why the franchise hasn't branched out yet. Even RPM with its post-apocalyptic plot was confined to the Go-onger footage.

I'm sorry to sound like a fan boy but how does Halo relate to anything in that short film? From someone who plays all the games I can tell you there was never a scene of someone snorting crack in a room with hookers, I can't say the same for CoD but I'm pretty sure CoD never had anything like those either. Sin City would be a better analogy to describe this film.

Andre, this is dead on balls so true!!! I think you hit the nail on the head concerning the adult/kids franchise relationship model. Muppets, Looney Tunes, and properties like that had the adult & kid thing BUILT IN from day 1, making it ok to like the property beyond the age expiration date. Whereas others like Batman overcame the just for kids baggage with time. Properties like Pokemon, Power Rangers, and Yugio are franchises I can't get into today as an adult as far as seeing new legit movies and episodes, etc or a gritty reboot. I can't get into the basic characters or storyline anymore. I can't buy into it anymore. Great commentary/rants as always!!!

I didn't even know there was a 'dark and gritty' fan film till I saw this vid..but for me I loved PR as a kid growing up, was a member of the club (literally I joined the club they had), had the Tommy martial arts video where he taught a few things, and watched so much PR it was something people knew me for. From PR I branched out to VR Troopers, Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad, Big Bad Beetleborgs, and Masked Rider. I got older and PR lost it's charm for me until I started to look up the original Sentai version it was taken from to make the US version and I felt alive again for the series since it was taking it's audience more seriously, and once again I branched out to Kamen Rider and other things. I have friends who still like PR and I don't begrudge them by they know my thought is always "The Sentai version from Japan does it better with less goofy stuff" yeah there is some goofy stuff in the Japanese version (example being the dance for this new version of rangers) but it just seems to be better done. I'd love to see PR taken more seriously here and it would more than likely get me back into it but until the market realizes they can actually have PR like TMNT with kids stuff and more mature stuff too it ain't gonna happen..Good lord I remember being a kid in the 90's and seeing one of the gory volumes of the TMNT comic and thinking "Why is Mikey bleeding?!?" since it was so different from the show.

I'll say it before and, say it again..... While I really REALLY didn't like the fan film, it was well made for satire for gritty reboots. While I hate looking at 90's kids nostalgia with Rose tinted glasses the idea of Rangers with actual real guns, a generic ass Machine Empire and, all the other garbage that fan film had, kinda actually piss me off. It didn't help that I rerewatch Linkara. What I'm trying to say is for the new Power Rangers movie make it a mixture of the first PR movie and like you said a Marvel movie.

I know, though they could make a decent enough Marvel-esque MMPR movie if they tried. Just find writers and directors that are fans of the show along with a decent enough budget for FX. Dont go chinsy like they did back in the day with the Ivan Ooze one.

What pisses me off about this short movie is that it's nothing like Power Rangers. People are like "Woah! THIS is the Power Rangers we want!" No, if you want that you don't want PR! It's okay for it to be dark, but it's gotta have the PR key elements! It's not like they made a dark version where the giant monsters crash everything and kill people, then the five heroes morph and kill Rita with a super blast that disintegrates her. No, they just said a bunch of swear wirds, showed some blood and made some very minor PR references. It'd be as if they made a "dark" Spider-Man movie that's all about MJ being a prostitute and Peter doing drugs, with him saying something about how he used to be a hero and that's it.

I've had love for Power Rangers since I was about 10. Had to hide the fact that I still watched it in high school. It got to a point where I just didn't care and someone approached me in the stairs and used that damn voice and asked if I still watched that "kids show." I just exploded, shoved him against the wall and yelled "I do! What of it?" The question never came up again.

The original MMPR movie is to this day still one of my favorite movies ever. It was exactly what I imagined MMPR could be like on the big screen, and it still has that cool factor to me. If the 2016 reboot comes out and it's anything like the modern-day superhero movies, I have complete faith that it will be amazing and be a real turning point for PR in general branching out and becoming like many other superheroes are. Have avenues for kids to access, and socially acceptable avenues for adults to access and be able to enjoy without ridicule. Like, it's super dumb that my one cousin cannot understand to this day what I saw in MMPR as a kid. He just sees the posing and rubber monsters. I see classic good vs. evil, the power of teamwork and camaraderie, facing your fears, etc. Power Rangers has depth; you just need to look deep for it.

Damn, Andre, look at you being all clever. Seriously, this is one of the more thoughtful videos I've seen this year. When you said there's only one reason this movie had such a big reaction, I thought it was because it used fairly well known actors and had decently high production values, but you surprised me with a really good observation. Power Rangers really is a franchise that is perfectly aligned towards having adult audiences as well, and yet if you're over, say, 14, and you like them, *someone* is going to look at you funny for it. I subscribed a long damn time ago and, I admit, I haven't been watching recently, but sometimes I come back and see stuff like this and it reminds me why I've never unsubscribed. Cool work, Andre. Now to go watch a few of the episodes I've skipped.

I was mixed on it, on the one hand seeing the visuals... the suits looked cool. Tommy's shield was awesome, them using guns not so much. The voice overs talking about why Zordon took teenagers, took kids and trained them to be soldiers in a war when they had no experience or idea of what it might mean. That was good, the idea that all the ranger's weren't good deep down and in a situation like that some might turn or give up. That was an interesting idea and we have had some darker power ranger's seasons. Not all have been fully lighthearted to the extreme. Some were serious, some had a dark tone. SPD had the opening to reveal the villain being him blowing up a planet, RPM gave a future with humanity on the verge of extinction. Lost Galaxy we saw a power ranger die, we saw a full ranger team turn evil for their own greed not mind control. We have seen the inner psyche of Tommy in Dino Thunder with him facing the different ranger powers. Him still being the oldest and longest ranger still fighting now going for in the show near over 20 years. The fan film wasn't perfect, we'll never get it that dark but it had enough things in it to show some glimmer of hought.

I'm an Adult and I tell people I love Power Rangers all the time! No one has ever really given me a hard time about it. I understand the point you're making in this video, and I do agree with you that PR is not given the same level of respect as other franchises. For some reason I want to say it's because it started as a low budget cut and paste job of US & Japanese source material, I can't back that up as fact, it's just an intuitive hunch.

*CLAPS* I completely agree Andre! I think the most frustrating thing about the fan film are the reactions, whether negative or positive, they are too extreme!! There will NEVER be a R rated PR film and the fanfilm certainly didn't run the franchise. But I do think this is nice publicity for the 2016 reboot and hopefully Saban/Lionsgate can show they can make an awesome PR film that appeals to ALL audiences like the Marvel films, Spider-man films, etc!! I know I certainly want a trilogy out of this reboot!

This film they're making for 2016, it would be awesome to make it a tad more for adults as fans of the original MMPR like myself "are" now adults but also Haim Saban would most likely head in the direction of a tad more for kids as they will make more out of it with regards to selling toys etc. Theres an interview with Johnny Yong Bosch aka Adam from MMPR who says just that. But as a fan it would be awesome if it had elements of both adult and child-like things.

I find that if a power rangers episode breaks away from the cookie cutter [Rangers kill monster] -> [Monster grows] -> [Megazord!] -> [Giant monster destroyed] formula, it's really enjoyable because the uncertainty makes it interesting. I think that they should make a show where the many power rangers tropes and conventions we've come to expect are thrown out the window and they do something genuinely new.
