I have always thought that the old-school buttpacks were a better design than the new issue MOLLE waistpacks that replaced them.

I have a reproduction of the older pack/sack, and until I watched your video, I didn't realise it had a gusset. Sweet! The gusset was tucked in, and I thought it was just a liner. Thank you, Blackie!

I use both a 1956 and 1961 buttpack. The latter required repairs much like your's. I was fortunate enough to fund a VE era worn fatigue shirt that I removed the sleeves and made patches with. I use the majority of the sleeve to fashion a new liner, applied sewing fabric glue, the hand sewed the material to the seams of bag interior. The glue was also applied near the holes to help reduce further loss of material. It worked so well that I water "proofed" the new liner for added protection. The visible exterior holes add character, but the new liner improves its use.

A M1936 musette bag would make a great haversack too. But an original would be too old and cost too much, so repo can be had. I have an original that some family member brought back from WW2. Wore it as a backpack when I was five years old, original WW2 canteen too.

The 3 day training pack is designed to use with the LBV 88. The D ring slips over the D ring on the rear panel and the strap secures everything together. The back secures to the belt with the keeper snaps or Alice clips. The whole system was short lived, but they kept the butt pack going. I think the whole system was the IIFV. The CFP 90 and patrol pack completed it.

I been doing that for years, my old gear still smells like Vietnam, lol 😆. I got away from my old military gear for a long time and just recently decided there was nothing better so I have went back to using it. Glad there is still someone besides me teaching the old grunt life in the woods. People need to listen before we all gone and take all this knowledge with us. Keep teaching the real life.

I really like the canvas butt pack. Normally used as a day rig with the belt and H-suspenders, there was a sleeping bag strap that allowed the bag to hang from loops on the shoulders. With my tent slung underneath, I could turn the pack into an overnight rig, as you describe.

The M1956 LBE had a butt pack adaptor, that allowed the butt pack to be used as a backpack. I used a M1956 butt pack on belt and a M1961 butt pack with adaptor. The M1967 LBE H-suspenders had hooks on back yoke to attach butt pack or poncho carrier. Only have one, wish I had bought more when they were cheap.

From a veteran of the era. The butt pack was a combat day pack. Mostly a one day patrol bag. Personal gear was not planned as contents. The only "overnighters" it saw were night patrols and ambushes. No sleep or shelter were going to be in the mission normally. It would hold three stripped out C-rat packs and 5 boxes of ammo. Less food and more ammo was common. You would not have time to eat anyway. Underneath was the poncho roll. A "space blanket" was not common back then and a woogie was not standard issue since you would not be sleeping on patrol. On the "Yoke" of the suspenders we hung the E-tool, square in the middle of our back. Under the straps of the suspenders we placed a pair of GI socks on each side under a ranger band. The butt pack was always used with the pistol belt and suspenders. The belt would hold 2 canteens and 4 ammo pouches. On the front would be a .45 ammo pouch if you had a .45. On the front suspender straps was your aid kit and compass pouch, and probably a pace cord.

The only time I ever used one of these (canvas, M56 pattern) was in Army Basic and Infantry AIT (Advanced Individual Training). If I remember correctly, unless we were bivouacking, we only carried the mess kit and an extra pair of socks. The fork, knife, and spoon were wrapped in the socks and then placed inside the mess kit. When bivouacking in Basic, we carried a shelter half, stakes, and one of the take down tent poles wrapped into a roll and slung under the bottom. Whether or not we carried a rubber maid in the roll, I don't remember. Nor do I remember carrying a blanket. When bivouacking in AIT, and there was a lot of it on the various ranges, we used squad tents with cots and sleeping bags. Once I got to Vietnam it was all ALICE pack. By the way, having lived under my boonie so long while in the field, I have a special place in my heart for hats, and am constantly on the lookout for the "perfect hat". I know, a fantasy. May I ask, is the hat you use still in production? It appears to be wool, which seems on the face of it a strange choice for south Alabama. I would have thought a canvas hat would have been your choosing. But hats are like knives, when you use it you'll know. Enjoyed the video, I really enjoy them. And thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.

I got one of those canvas sweedish gas mask bags that were really popular a few years ago. it's the same size/shape as the canvas one you show, but it doesn't have the features that bag has, no pass throughs or extra straps to strap or tie things to no liner. But it's fine bush crafting purposes and holds a surprising amount of stuff. I modified the straps to make it more of a shoulder bag and it works great.

Funny I didn't think about it in your blackbird haversack video. I mentioned I have my aloce pack that typically stays at camp but I work in layers and also use the Y-harness alice system with a field pack like yours instead of the smaller buttpack so I guess I really use that field pack on my belt and harness as my haversack. I keep a bit of food and plastic ziplocks for gathering material in it along with my poncho and woobie tied to the bottom. My philosophy in working in layers has always been each layer I can survive if the trip goes bad but it may just be a little harder as I lose layers.

You could waterproof that or anything that will hold water with naptha and 100% clear silicone. I watched a video of this and he made a sheet waterproof. Take a bucket, put a plastic bag in it, pour 1 qt of naptha in it, then add the tube of clear silicone. Knead the bag to get the silicone to completely dissolved, then dip whatever you want to waterproof in this. Make sure you leave no dry spots anywhere. Wrong it out to ensure it’s all wet, they dry outside for 24 hours. The video used a sheet to make a waterproof tarp. Thought this could really come in handy.

The 97 in that number shows the contract date of 1997 so it was made 1997 or later.

@@BLACKIETHOMAS I already have - and use them. Different levels of use, but several redundancies. Matching soft shackles.

I had one of those that I used for years when I wasn't having fun in the woods I used it when I surveyed. I love those things I do not know what happened to the one I had but I certainly would like to have another one. Blackie would you please sell me that old butt pack please I would be delighted to give you any amount of money you want for it. I've been in several Army Navy stores and Military outlets and still can't find one. I would be delighted to buy that one from you please please sell that to me. I hope you read this. Thank you Blackie.

No I get it straight if you were in the military they issued you a pistol belt that butt pack canteen if you weren't in the military that is a butt pack not a habersack and if you have a canteen with a wire handle on the cup that's not a canteen cup it's a piece of junk canteen cup has the pool under handle it's a lot more stable than that butterfly handle they came out with oh and everything hooked to the belt the pistol belt that was issued to you the canteen the butt pack and it came with a set of shoulder straps not that shoulder strap it was a either h harness or wire harness shoulder straps it that hooked to the belt in the butt pack get it straight
