That’s funny! Me (Germany, ex Fallschirmjäger, noe nearly 63 :)) using this pack (Jägerrucksack) as my favorite! BTW the folding mat was extra made for putting in this pack and the big combat pack also and was part of the personal handed out equipment. The pack is nearly everlasting....but go for the original! We all used big garbage bags to make them waterproof in the field. Thanks for this vid! Glad you promoted a great part of equipment!

I carried this pack every day to work (college professor) lugging heavy books. Never had a problem. Probably 15 years or so ago I posted a "fix" for the closure buckles on BCUK (BushcraftUK). Basically you remove the buckles from the straps, turn them over, and with the buckle pointing up run the strap through the first slot, under the middle bar, and out through the opening at the bottom of the buckle. Then install the buckle so that the strap part attached to the ruck passes between the prongs. Then they will work like a normal strap. Same for the pockets.

I've got 2 with the accordion pads. Actually, it was your review on the pad that prompted me to get one a few years ago. When I first got the packs, I was a little sore that a typical nesting cup and water bottle didn't fit in the side pockets. But the tall, oval surplus plastic Swiss water bottle with the nested aluminum cup fits perfectly. Blackie, thank you so much for that clever top cord toggle trick, that's so simple since there's really nothing to do but use it, yet it really makes a difference in how the load ends up distributed.

I find backpacks to be THE most addicting piece of gear... I have one just for corner store skirmishes, one for beach crafting, one for boating, one for hiking, one for bushcrafting... Stuff may get thrown about from one pack to the other, but most my bags have the bare essentials already in them ready to go.

Great series Blackie. I don't recall ever seeing the German Alpine Rucksack, looks really nice. I'm so glad you're still going to do videos on the Alice packs. I have the medium as well as the large Alice. That's why I like the medium better than the large because it doesn't expand that far out from your back like the large does, which sticks out a mile behind you. Although I like the large because of more room and more pockets on the outside of the pack. Can't wait for the next video. Thanks! 👍

Good thing about the Awesome ALICE frame is the ruck is off your back allowing airflow and cooling don't forget. especially in the hot jungle when your sweating like a pig on heat not to mention 2 weeks of prickly heat skin irritation along with a crustacean of white body salt forming on the fatigues after long haul patrols up and down hills for a week, burning the skin for extra pain just before combat if that's not enough. i can see how the alpine ruck hugs the back in cold climates Never tried it to be honest. Great backpack tips you got i have to admit. you got some knowledge. i know exactly the benefits of a good pack adjusting the weight between hips and shoulder burn your dead right on long hauls is a pro tip lesson. heheh

How not to freeze, what to eat, how to hunt, how to grow food. How to survive if it gets crazy. I've asked several survival experts, so far you're the only one that has responded at all. I'm anxiously waiting to see what you have to say. Lol. BTW, thank you for your videos.

When I was in service, the C rations came packed 12 to a carboard box that was fitted inside a heavy cardboard "sleeve". We used the sleeve on the side of the ALICE that rested against our backs. This kept all of those Cfood cans from digging into out backs. In a tropical environment it's a fun thang to hump around. By the way, the "A" ration was what you got in the messhall, and upon occasion in the field ( I remember getting As only once in a combat environment). "B" rations, as far as I know, was cold cuts. I never saw these in the field. And then the "C", twelve different meals of goodness. And that "goodness" got very, very old going into the 2nd or 3rd week. I served in the 4th ID, and we had the largest AO (Area of Operations) in the country and maybe the smallest helicopter support. It was a sparse AO. Love your videos.

I love this pack. I have an original issue dated 2003. The only issue i have is storage. I like my stuff organized so i don't have to rummage thru in case i need something in case of an emergency. The two side pockets are okay but not enough. But seeing your previous video you can modify the flap into a zippered pouch. That said i think this is one of the best packs out there and german quality to boot 🇩🇪 will certainly last a lifetime and then some.

They're great packs, I've got 3 (1 canvass, 2 cordura) and I agree with most of what Blackie says. I have done some modifications that he's missed. The buckles are akward, by redoing how the strap goes through it's much easier to adjust when loose and locks up tight when under tension. Much easier to use, hard to explain how to

Good vid. I havent thought about a new camping bag for this season. The last bag that I got was over 10 years ago and I believe it doesn't need to be replaced yet. Its my multi bag about the size of what you got, but more modernized and built like a urban bag to blend into city living. No frame and solid black to keep the size hidden with molle and straps to adjust for all seasons/tasks. I dont know if I could do multiple bags like you got going on. I use molle kit bags that I would attach to the main bag and adjust based on plans. I also haven't gotten into the heavy bushcraft or military style bags yet. But the thought of grab and go has always been appealing to me. My bag with your haversack and GCC canteen kit, makes me believe that I am set for now. But lately, I have been seeing more bush/military bags on the trails. So maybe one day in the near future I will try those types of bags out. Lately, I have been going on day hikes with just the GCC and haversack. The multi bag stayed home, or in the vehicle during long trips as a 3-5 day get home bag or BOB. Times be changing in the upper Midwest. Everywhere I go is getting to busy to want to sleep overnight. The last time that I was out, there was a search party that I came into looking for two hunters that had gotten lost. The time before that there was a group of people hunting mushrooms late in the season because they didn't know any different. What's the point of solitude if there are groups of people around.

I guess that's why the alice works for me, I am of average height at 5ft9 but I'm barrel chested so the aloce sits high on my back. I mentioned in an earlier comment I also run a alice Y-harness LBE with the field pack and it all just works for me but mayby I made some sacrifices. I basically got into this hobby with only a surplus store full of 40s-90s GI surplus to buy from as a kid. The system just worked for me, even the older WW2-Vietnam stuff can work with it. I'll have to experiment some.

I prefer the Camp Trails packs from the 90's to early 2000's when they moved to Europe. They're made out of either nylon or polyester (I'm not sure) but they're very well made and you can pick them up on eBay for $50-$60 bucks in new to excellent condition. I have 5 medium and large ones in different colors to try and help me remember which stuff I put in each pack. They ride high up on your back, have a lot of pockets and will carry 45-50 litres or more if you strap stuff on the outside. Some also have compression straps and have lots of lash points on the back and front straps. You can also get good lightly used packs from other manufacturers at a large discount from new. Mine are internal frame packs but they're many good external frame packs as well.

You had a book bag? All we had was a cotton duck book strap which was also useless. LOL. For camping we had canvas Boy Scout back packs which was also very small but sturdy. I agree about the issues with the alice packs, though i do use them. But only for winter, and i make sure heavy stuff is against thr frame, and use the large volume for sleeping bag, and clothing layers. Stuff thats bulky, but fairly light. But generally i like a bag as small as possible, and narrower than my shoulders. And the less 'stuff" dangling the better. Serious underbrush by me, and only need to get hung up a few times to correct your packing.

Nah, gotta have a frame on my summer pack. I like so many in that size range I'd never pick just one other than framed vs not. My medium ALICE on its frame is a favorite since I was literally 6 years old. The one I have is the same one Mom carried to Saudi in the Gulf War, and then I took it as luggage to Greece, Turkey, and Egypt.. it's got sentimental value.. I have a Hæren (Norwegian army) framed canvas pack that's exactly the same layout as that alpine pack except its external framed and leather straps everywhere, excellent find.. currently in that size range I'm in a Kifaru X-Ray for my 'loaded to go' woods pack. Winter time pack favorite from surplus land is the USMC ILBE. Bar none. That pack fits me great, but I'm literally the army template body that all the field gear is made for (6'0", 180, trim waist, broad shoulders). The FILBE is ok, but can get to bulbous pretty quickly unless you have all the straps and know good packing habits. Carries heavy loads like firewood and ammo boxes like a boss, tho. The large ALICE is okay for winter, but i like it better for gear heavy 3 season use instead, the two USMC packs work winter bulk a little better for me, and they have better access. I have yet to try a large MOLLE ruck, or any of the newer army stuff really, just stuck on my alice packs for that branch of surplus... Love the series so far, boss.

I have found a company ( Down East Innovations ) that has a frame and harness system made for the Alice that I like. I will actually use my Alice again. I realize you don't like the Alice because of the shape of the pack but this different system pulls it closer to the body and it carries better.

Never used one of the "book bag "packs . I had several uncles who had surplus army gear from WWII and or Korea / Vietnam so I still prefer the old canvas gear except for my Alice packs . Still use my old Boy Scout pack made of canvas.

well to be fair the alice pack is designed for grunts 6' or taller! when it was developed the army was getting taller recruits! the Swedish and Swiss packs are pretty good too just less outside pockets frankly though i found a small external frame pack (which i'm partial too! the strap layout fits me good and comfortable!) at goodwill year before last that's good a 5 to 10 days out! and sportsman guide knows full well what it's for it's just they sell it as what most either think it is for or are too damn lazy mentally to figure out what to use it for.

Blackie what "small" hammock do you carry in your haversack? I have a really nice onewind, 11 or 12' double, its great but to big to haversack. Im 6' 0" 230lbs now (thx to the silver wolf series and get of the couch motivators)!
