WATER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE DEAL WITH IN OUR OUTDOOR ADVENUTRES.How we carry our water container and any other gear is a big deal.for many yrs i carried a u.s. army canteen with its carrier and a canteen cup w/ stove and a lid,it was my go to set.Today i have switched to the Grayl water filter.i am very happy with the performance. bushcraft kits will often have a cook pot or bushpot as we call them included as a way to cook meals along the trail as we hike and or camping.i searched the internet looking for a cooking system for the grayl bottle and found none.So in the spirit of woodcrafters we take what we have and make what we need. i began to create.. my own cooking bushpot system for the grayl. i began with a stanley stainless steel cook pot .to the cook pot i added a ozark trail long handle spoon from the camping section at walmart. The GRAYL fit inside the pot with the lid stored under the pot in the carrier. To carry this system in camping hiking outdoor adventures i selected a stichedgear.com water bottle carrier.i will be adding aluminum foil under the pot in the carrier to be used for baking around the campfire. thus far i am very happy with my review of the Grayl and the stanley cook pot.

Since the carrier has grommets you could easily make a small pouch that can mount on the outside to carry the lid and spoon.

Blackie, I use black large and small hair bands ($1 each packet at Dollar Tree) for gear retention on my packs and pouches. A large black one can be affixed onto your pouch to retain the Grayl and keep it from banging around in the Stanley pot. Black is barely noticeable, too. I'm an old retired military veteran who loves to improvise like you. I maintain a "crafts" kit on my work table and one in my Jeep that contain, 8" zip ties, 11" zip ties, six each long and thick cable ties, 1' and 2" Gorilla tape, industrial velcro strips, a good pair of wire cutters, wire (for snares and repairs), small and large hair bands (black and OD green), separate mini tubes of Super Glue, scissors, leatherman multi-tool, a Bic and a Crocs (mini BBQ lighter) plus whatever you feel would make your life easier to have available. This kit in my Jeep has saved the day many times on overland camping trips. I also, like Dave Canterbury, believe in redundancy. I have the Grayl, a Sawyer mini kit, water purification tablets and the ability to boil water as contents in my bug out bag. A couple of one gallon freezer ziploc bags are part of my H2O kit.

I took the Stanley pot , a GSI cup, a Nalgene Backpacker stainless bottle and put all that it in a condor bottle bag with(2) 100 round saw pouches molle to the side of it with a shoulder strap, Fire kit and spoon in front pouch, cooking kit in one 100 round saw pouch and food in the other 100 round saw pouch. even got room for a 5 x 7 Walmart tarp. Makes a great day pack. Also when you drill your holes in the Stanley Cup drill them on the side of the handle (for pouring and straining with the lid. Then you can use the Pathfinder cup lid and a fish mouth spreader to hang your pot. It works great.

For what it's worth Blackie, it makes more sense to me, for the lid on the bottom. In the bottom position, it gives a space for the cup to shape the leather flat. This allows the carrier to sit upright when you set it down. It also allows you to bring the lacing tighter around the cup. An elastic loop laced through the top holes, then up through the finger hole at the top of the Grayl & over the knob, will secure it. This is how I fashion mine. I keep the handle & spoon the same way you do. I hope this helps.

I drilled mine out years ago. It is in one of my old videos. I use the fish mouth spreader as a bail. If randy would put a pouch just big enough to slide the lid in the front like a credit card and the same for the spoon somewhere.

Awesome! I have been trying to figure out the same type of system lol. I really like that stitched gear carrier. I have the adventure cup and I do not like all the pieces coming off and on or not having a bail. Canterbury actually recommended his 48oz cup which makes sense. It has the bat wing handles and a lid and you can use the fish spreader for a bail. He said just throw a bandanna in there to stop the rattle. That’s what I’m going to go with and probably that stitched gear carrier you showed. Thanks so much for letting us know about it😀👍🏻👍🏻

Hey Blackie, I was inspired by your last video on this topic about the Grayl bottle cook set, that I had made my own. Using the same Stanley adventure cook set. I add the Pathfinder 25 oz stainless steel(SS) cup and lid to the bottom of the Stanley pot as a secondary container to cook or drink out of. The Pathfinder 25 oz lid fits onto the Stanley pot perfectly with a slight friction fit , the same as it does on the Pathfinder cup. I then marked the Stanley pot where the open slits of the Pathfinder lid were, near the Stanley pot handle and the opposite side, and drilled two hole. This allowed me to use the SS fish mouth spreaders, also form the Pathfinder store, to use as a bail for both the Pathfinder 25 oz cup and the Stanley Adventures pot. You could also use the stove that fits the Pathfinder 25 oz SS cup, much like you do with your canteen cup stove. Thank you for another great video. Keep it up.

Nice video. Put lid under pot and wet form with kit together lace down tight, till dry. For spoon and handle, put 2 grommets in back uo high, and put shock cord or leather thong through the holes. Slip spoon in, slip handle between spoon and leather back. For lid use small key ring, but notch lid loop a bit to hold ring upright. Well I feel it may work. Enjoy

I really like my Sweed cook set. Yeah it's an extra 2 lbs but I destination camp. Yes I have my canteen cup for exploring to cook a snack. After you showed that cook set I got one and heaven ever since. Last I cut down a rack out of an old stove that slips between my pack and frame. Great for steaks or Iowa chops over the fire. A new WestWind coming in a month or 2. Last my pack is a modified Alice. Sold on it since the army. Last soak your carrier in water for 3 to 4 minutes. Let it set a minute then put your pot and lid in and tighten it up. It will let you mold the leather to the pieces. Great video Blackie!

A couple of ideas/recommendations. The Pathfinder mug/lid has butterfly handles, a good tight lid, and is drilled for a bail stock as it comes. For a bail, the "fish mouth spreader" they sell works very well. So does a chunk of coat hanger wire. For the spoon, Sea to Summit puts out a long handled spoon or spork in anodized aluminum. For a carrier both Maxpedition and the Pathfinder bottle carrier pouches work well and give a bit of insulation to keep that water cool. For myself, I use the heavy cover canteen, cup and lid with the Center Line Systems "Mother" pouch. Pricey but worth it. I rig the pouch using a coup;e of small carabiners and a padded strap from an old camera bag for shoulder carry on the side opposite my haversack. Very much enjoy the videos, been doing the camping, hiking, backpacking thing for 60+ years now and once the virus is solved and my back fixed I'll be back at it here in the Ozarks...

I noticed you didn't seem to necessarily care for the flimsy spoon from Walmart. I spent a lot of years using all different kinds of utensils but never found anything I thought was really great for several days roughing it. A couple of years ago I came across the Ka-Bar spork. It's very solid and even though I never thought too much of sporks, I have to say this is one great eating utensil. It comes apart in the middle of the handle and has a knife. So you have your fork, spoon and knife all in one piece. Doesn't take up any room, very light and solid (Just like you'd expect from a Ka-Bar) product. Maybe you already know or have seen them, just thought I'd mention it if you hadn't.

Hi Blackie, If tyou are modifying your stanley, try drilling the holes at the handle and opposite side. I did it and meant that when handle is in it can be pored out without spilling. Made a hanging bale from piece of wire and it;s an outside bale so that lid can be placed on while hanging and not have tpo mod the lid.

I have a suggestion concerning your stanley cook pot. I took and removed some of the metal that the handle is attached to such that the handle would latch in at an angle to keep the pot l hanging level, especially when full, from a hook (or cut stick) over a fire. I saw this done on a You Tube channel, I just don't remember which one. I have used this to heat up a can of Dinty Moorre Beef Stew and it worked pefectly. Believe me, that cooking pot was full to the brim. If I had put small holes in the side they would have been a source of leakage. This is just a suggestion, but it works.

I thought of a video topic that your viewers (specifically, those in Commie European countries like England) might enjoy. In some places around the world, 3" slip-joint knives are the only cutting tools that one can legally carry. You could do a video talking about using such a knife in creative ways to accomplish tasks that would normally be reserved for fix blade knives. For example, rather than batoning to split wood, you could demonstrate how to carve a splitting wedge to then baton that piece instead.

if you laced from the bottom grommets up to the third - then back down to the second - then back up you might be able to put the lid underneath without it slipping out the side.- the elastic idea - cross them / it diagonally over the top - easy to move one handed then & not likely to slip off the grayl. ... option 3 - heavy tinfoil lid = wraps around the pot in the carrier.

You mentioned a place where you found sweet tasting water and I have a little story about some sweet tasting water for you. Back in 1990 I was stationed at Ft. Bliss TX during the first Gulf War and I got to take Christmas leave at the last moment so I didn't have a lot of time or money to make travel plans. I was lucky enough to have afriend who was driving her car home on leave to leave with her dad as she had came down on orders to go to Korea and wouldn't need a car there. I worked out a deal that I would help drive on the way to Alabama instead of her or her Dad so they would have time to talk and catch back up on family events going on. I had always complained about the bad sulfur tasting water on post and the surrounding area of El Paso always mentioning the sweet tasting water from my well back home in Alabama and she would always tell me that there is no way that water could taste sweet by itself. when we got to My home in Alabama she asked my Mom so where's this sweet tasting water I have been hearing about and my Mom went over to the kitchen sink and filled her a glass of nice sweet cold well water. When she tasted it she nearly flipped her lid and couldn't believe the sweet taste it had. We ended up sendeng her and her dad off with about 6 gallon jugs of water for the rest of their trip home and to share with friends at home. This was at a time when bottled water had not really got popular and she made the comment you could bottle and sell this water like crazy in El Paso . I laughed and said yea right who would buy water when you can get it out of the faucet for free. Had I have taken her advise back then I would probably be a millionaire today. Shortly after that bottled water hit the scene and I hve been kicking myself ever since especially since my Mom and Dad sold their place with the cold sweet well water that I had grown up on. Looking back there have been a lot of opportunities I could have taken advantage on and gotten rich but I usually thought or got told by someone else that it would never make me any kind of money in the long run. Like the olld saying goes opportunity usually only knocks once, well so far I have either been to asleep to hear the knock or not at home alltogether, or someone is telling you not to get the door because someone is trying to sell you a load of crap. Well maybe sometimes you need a load of crap if you are trying to raise a garden and sell the crops to the market.

Stanley mod for hanging: Take a Dremel and cut a notch on the cup's locking hinge tab (a little more than half way up; both sides). This creates a middle locking point for the handle, so that you can use the handle as a hanging tab. Also, replace the plastic lid holder with a key ring. Quick, cheap, and effective.

Why not solder or spot weld small square ears opposite each other on outside top on sides on pot?

The problem that I have with the Grayl filter is that only allows you to filter 250L 65GAL, and then the filter goes to the garbage (only the filter part), for me it is too little; if not for that I would definitely buy one.

4yrs later, is there an update to this system? I know you now millbank bag it but do you feel the grayl is still putting out good water?

Grayls plug up way to quickly to justify the price. Sawyer still wins.

Sir, I really do not know about that setup. It looks like it is top heavy. If the big/main piece of leather was longer, it would set deeper in the pocket. You would just have to adjust the leather straps so their ends are lo longer the inside flap would be taller/longer than the outside flap, forming a deeper pocket. 2¢

Smile.... What I just saw was a man putting a square peg in a round hole. It works if you beat on it hard enough and get rid of the corners. Lol... It works - Yep but you got some more work ahead of you. The real test will be when you are out on the trail. Just saying.... Blessings...

Blackie don't add the bail, DOES the Stanley pot seal? Will it leak with bail holes? If it seals it would be nice to so you can carry liquids in it without it spilling in your haversack

Hey Blackie. Couldn’t you just wet form the leather to hold the lid nice and snug in the bottom? Also, isn’t dropping the Grayl into your cook pot going to transfer any viruses and contaminants from the outer part onto the inner of your pot? Just an observation.
