i watched that first vid u made on the rough riders and to date i own 16 of them with also Marble and Colt thrown in for good measure and not one of those knives which are used daily have ever failed me plus the only thing i do with them is to strop and clean after use the really great thing about them is that here in the UK most of them are legal to carry which is great and they never seem to scare anyone that sees me with one, in fact they bring back memories of when they seen there father grand father using one, so i will continue to collect this type of Chinese made knife and be proud to do so

How in the world do you use 16 pocket knives "DAILY", you carry 16 pocket knives on your person, daily? And even if you used a different one every day , that means you're only using each of them 22.8125 times a year. And out of those 22 days each , you may not even have to use you pocket knife on some of those days. So how can you honestly say they get used every day and have never failed you? I used a 1968 U.S. Camillus Military Pocket Knife for over 24 years. I carried it every time I left the house , and I have used it inside the house as well. Didn't use it every day , but it was there when I did need it. But after 24+ years I can give you an honest opinion about the knife because it was "The Only" knife I carried. ( Fantastic pocket knife by the way )

Colt and RR are the same factory. Check the Colt jumbo trapper vs the same Rough Rider plus a few other ones. Importers go to China and order whatever they want and just put their name on it but it's all the same. Here in America everybody wants a Klean kanteen stainless steel water bottle. In the UK they have exactly the same water bottle but with a different name but it's all from the same company

I love knives too. Got a few!. I just bought 3 from Ricky at Wallace Knife Works, just down the road from you. I spotted a Case, under the shade trees, where the employees parked outside a machine shop in an old school, between Dothan & Farley plant. I left it there, so the person that lost it, had a chance of finding it. About a month later, I came back & remembered the knife. I looked & saw just a little part, above the red clay. I dug it out & still have it over 30 years later.

Blackie, I have had a Roughrider Barlow for about a year now and it has become my go to knife for whitteling. It is better than some of my more expensive knives... I think it holds a edge really good. I have never hsd to sharpen it. I just use pocket steel or pocket strop... maybe ever 30 to 60 minutes depending on how hard the wood is, but I prefer razor sharp blade. For ever day use and abuse I have a smaller red swiss army knife with a saw on it... It has the other gadgets I use around the house and camp. The blades and gadgets have been constantly abused since 1978 and it is still a fair whittler - for when I don't have my barlow with me. Sometimes I carry an old Leatherman on my belt. I have never owned one of the new fancy ones with all the do-dads. They are just too heavy for the use I would give one. The original Leatherman used to be real handy to use for fiddeling with my old VW Bug while traveling around Europe back in the "70's". I degress... lol, For everyday Whittling and Bushcraft I find it excellent.... Thanks for the videos Blackie... I appricate you expierence and wisdom.

Right on Blackie. My friend bought a $70 dollar Case stockman and criticized my EDC $18 dollar Rough rider workhorse stockman. I notice at work he was using a different knife. I asked him where is the Case? He told me it’s a home cause he didn’t want to scratch it or ruined it. Good review my friend.

Thank you, Blackie for the informative videos. I have a small knife collection and like you, the knives I purchase are going to be knives that I use. In my normal NY setting I'm not using them for their intended purposes. I've never trapped or skinned an animal, but I enjoy carrying slipjoints for the tradition and for general light use. I hope to someday do some bush crafting when I retire and get of NY. Thank you again.

Rough Rider definitely makes a very good looking knife. Another brand I think is the same as R.R. is Steel Warrior they are very similar. I love my slip joints too and everytime I use one I think of when I was a kid watching my dad or grand dad pull out their pocket knife to cut whatever needed cutting. A few times it was a balls off of a poor Ol pig we were raising to slaughter. I like the yellow handle Case knives the best personally with the chrome vanadium 1095 blades. I don't have a problem with rust if I keep a smile thin coat of oil on them. Especially after a patina develops. Most Case knives are around $50 but they can go up to $80 or $100. The yellow delrin handles that I have for EDC users are about $40 each. Btw, we still need to plan a get together soon.
@jamesaritchie15 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say most Case XX knives are around fifty dollars. My experience is that most are around seventy to eighty dollars, and I have one that cost a hundred and twenty dollars. But Case XX has the best steels of any slip joints made without contest. It isn't even close. Case proprietary 440C tests better under lab conditions than any other 440C used in slip joints, and Case 420HC tests better than what Buck uses. The proprietary carbon steel Case uses is a CV steel, and analysis shows it's identical to Ka-Bar, real Ka-Bar, 1095 Cro-Van, which is the best 1095 on the market. Standard 1095, which is what other knife makers use, is a very good steel, but 1095 CV is even better. A lot better. "CV" means that chromium and vanadium was added to the steel during manufacture, and this adds a tremendous amount of toughness and strength. I have a Case Trapper with Delrin scales that I bought forty-five years ago, and I've used it to death. I've probably skinned two thousand animals with that thing, and it's still going strong. This said, I still greatly prefer bone scales, even for EDC. I have several Case XX knives that are almost as old as the company, and the bone handles are still intact, even though the blades show that most of this knives have been used hard and sharpened a hundred times or more. I have a Case Stockman that I bought nearly thirty years ago. It has bone scales, and while I don't use it as a skinning knife, I've done a ton of woodcarving with it, and the bone scales look better now than when I bought it.

I'm just getting into slip joints and I really like the US made manufactures. I see your point about not being worried if you lost a $17 Chinese knife, but the thing is that I'm not only buying that knife for me to use as a EDC tool. I want to pass that knife on to my son or grandson. Now I'm sure they would treasure it, because it was mine, but what about 2 or 3 generations in the future. US made knives will last, they're quality, good looking and will be cared about in future generations. A cheap Chinese knife will be tossed in a box, thrown in the basement and forgotten about. Only to be seen at the next yard sale.

Honestly, I don't buy knives for two of three generations in the future. I buy knives to use right now, and to use hard. I can also tell you I find far more Case XX knives at rummage sales and flea markets than I do Rough Rider knives. These is not you grandpa's China, and while made in China knives are inexpensive, very, very few of them are cheap. They're as well made as any knife made in America. They use the same material, and often better materials, and automation has reached the stage where fit and finish is almost automatic. So I s Walk and talk. People need to get over the idea that everything made in China or Japan is junk. This was true two or three decades ago, but it is not true today. Everyone says these knives use 440a steel, but this is technically not true. China does not use the same designations for steel the western world uses, and they have their own formulas. When a company has a knife made in china, they don't get the Western steel they ask for, they get the Chinese equivalent, which is sometimes not quite as good, and sometimes is a lot better. Chinese made 440c is actually what we would call high grade 440b. But the odd thing is that Chinese made 440a is is really a cross between western 440a, and western 40c. It's not quite as good as our 440c in abrasion resistance, but it's better than 440b in every other way, and definitely better than our 40a. This is why it comes stamped "440 stainless, rather than 440a, or 440b. It really isn't any of these steels. It's a 440 steel that belongs to China, and they're the only ones who make it. It may not be a modern crucible steel, which is wonderful stuff for many uses, but which I don't believe works well on knives, but it's still a very, very good steel, and nothing to be ashamed of using. I use a lot of knives, including Case XX and knives for other companies that often cost twice what a Case does. And I know steel. Case XX steel is the best steel out there on ordinary pocketknives. Even most of the more expensive knives don't use steel as good as what Case uses, OR as good as what Rough Rider uses. Case makes excellent, high quality knives, and with care, they will last generations, but I've seen them fall part or break when they weren't given that care. Rough Rider knives are the same way. With care, they will also last for generations because they are high quality knives, and the steel is better than many knives that cost as much as two hundred or more dollars. I have a two hundred and twenty five dollar Stockman that's made from Western 440a. This is nowhere near as good as RR steel. In fairness, RR knives do usually have one weak point, though it isn't a serious one. It's the spring pivot pin. The pin does an excellent job, and almost every pattern of RR knives has great walk and talk, but the pin is thin and flush, while higher priced knives such as case have a wider pin that's rounded and protrudes. I've never seen a RR spring pivot pin break, but over enough decades, it might. It certainly stands a better chance of breaking that a Case pin.. On the other hand, even if it does break, it takes only a few minutes to replace it, and you can probably do it yourself. And it may never break. Thinner may be fine, and RR may have accounted for the spring pressure. I just don't know. But they are quality knives, and they do use quality materials, and they do use steel that's more than good enough for any purpose. And if my kinds, grandkids, or great-grandkids don't want to keep them, I really don't care in the least. I buy knives for me, not for them.
@jelkel257 жыл бұрын
There are knives you pass on and there are use right now knives, the Rough Riders still have their place, you don't trust most kids with high end knives, they loose, trade, break and abuse them, they're learning. Give them an RR and it's good enough to learn on and you don't need to worry when it gets dropped in a 10 foot deep latrine hole.

I have one of the Rough Rider Barlow-style knives. It has mother of pearl handles, and looks very nice. I think I paid maybe $15 for it when RR knives first came out. In fact, it looks so nice that I've pretty much put it away and don't use it much. After 60 years of knife use, my preference for whittling/carving is carbon steel blades (mostly Case) because of it's relative ease of sharping, but even more so for polishing the final edge for really slipping through the wood I'm working on and leaving a nice polished surface after the chip has been removed.

I's say you are right about Marbles/RR being made at the same place. Both brands are owned by Smokey Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville, TN. Both use 440A steel. Why would smkw use different factories to make these knives? They wouldn't. That is how they can sell them so cheaply.

To be honest, I would'nt class 440A as high carbon stainless. But apart from that, I agree with everything you say. The knife is not made by Rough Rider for Marbles. In China, a dozen knife brands are often made in the same factory. Sometimes more. China doesn't own these brands, they're just made in China, so one manufacturing company will make knives for many knife companies that are owned by people outside of China. Nor do the owners of the brands own the factories in China where the knives are made. Knife companies simply contract Chinese factories to make knives according to the owners specifications. Those are called "match strike" nail nicks, and most consider them more attractive that standard nail nicks. One main factory in China puts these on nearly every slip joint knife they make, and they make slips joints for several companies. Unless otherwise specified, many knives have similar features because it costs a lot more to shift machinery in order to make a nail nick that doesn't have the "match strike" groves. Anyway, saying stainless steel is "high carbon" is rather silly. Yes, it has a lot of carbon in it because it has to have it, but it's meaningless. The only reason the phrase "high carbon stainless steel" exists is because every outdoorsmen who knows anything wants a carbon steel knife for the wilderness. Stainless was selling very poorly to the outdoor market, and it was called "high carbon steel", with 1095 leading the pack. So stainless steel knife makers started calling their own steel "high carbon", and this has confused the crap out of many beginners. Rough Rider knives are made from plain old 440A steel, and the carbon content doesn't change the fact that 440A is just not a great steel. It's a lot better than steel snobs say it is. It is, in fact, the most widely used knife steel in the world, and the US military uses forty tons of it per year. But it's still just 440A, the steel of choice for all the cheap knives out there, with the exception of some real pieces of junk that use 3cr13. But when anyone calls the stainless steel "high carbon", don't listen. The carbon content doesn't make stainless any better at all. They're just trying to snatch off a portion of the outdoor market where people all want carbon steel, preferably 1095 CV.

Say Heah Blackie, I watched a video once that had the Case owner or his sin and daughter promoting Case knives on a video. The owner said something very importantant that reminded me if what you just said, and that's if it's tempered right, The man said that Case Tempers their steel so good that their 420 stainless will hold the edge as good as others 440. I think the Rough Riders are 420 but really tempered good.,,.

Kewl BeanZ, Brother Blackie.,,.
@jamesaritchie17 жыл бұрын
No. Case doesn't use 420, and neither does Rough Rider. Case uses a proprietary blend of 440c that may be the best stainless on the market for knives. It's quite a bit better than regular 440c, which is a very good steel. Rough Rider knives are stamped 440 Stainless, but I know someone who works at one of the biggest knife steel plants in China, and I've seen the spectroscopic analysis of the steel, and of Case steel, and of Buck steel, and of about four dozen other knife maker's steels. You reall can't heat treat and temper regular 420 steel very well. No matter what you do to it, you can't change what the elements are inside it, or the amounts of those elements. 420HC steel, such as Buck uses, is a good steel. The 420j2 they use in their made in China knives may or may not be good. As far as I know, it's never really been tested as a blade steel. It's always been listed as a liner steel, but it has some interesting properties, so we'll see. Heat treatment matters, and so does tempering, but neither can turn a poor steel into a good steel. All heat treatment and tempering does is make a given steel as good as that particular steel can be. Steel can contain up to nineteen elements, and it's the percentage of each element, how it's melted, when each element is added, on and on, that makes a given steel what it is. Heat treat and temper cannot add or take away a single element. Most 1095, for example, has virtually no chrome, and zero vanadium. You can heat treat and temper it to death, and it still won't have either of these elements. Case X high carbon steel, and Ka-Bar high carbon steel, both have these elements, which are expensive, and they're why the 1095CV they use is the very best on the market. Rough Rider steel is good for the same reason Case XX steel is good. They both use good steel from the start, so when they heat treat and temper it, they end up with good steel.

Blackie, how do you keep your cool with all the gnats in you area? Grand parents lived in Dothan and Gnat would drive me crazy. In your eyes , mouth, ears, and any scratch you have. Back on subject. The old timers used their knives as I do and cut anything, scrapped battery terminals, clean horse feet, then would eat with it. I own some pocket "jewelry" and have lost a $200 benchmade . Value is what I try to look at as I age. I would at one time carry $200 knife and would not use it much and for sure not let anyone else use it . I would rather have a good value knife now over pocket"jewelry" anytime. Here in North Alabama, case knives are the are in all the hardware stores and at this time in my life cost to much to loose. Old Timer brand is more my speed. Old ones non-stainless are even better.

I have a Rough Rider knife (the Elephant Toenail model). I love it. I see nothing wrong with that brand. I also have the U.S. military, scout style knife by Marbles. I have 5 of those. I like those too. I think you have one of those also. How has that one held up for you over the long term?

Probably all the same factory in China. Check out the Colt jumbo stockman. It's exactly the same as the rough rider as well as many others. I don't care if there is a tiny space here and there. They are solid and good looking. I own five and just ordered 12 more all at once, save on shipping from the USA to Canada plus who knows what's going on with China in the future

true it is just a good solid working knife for edc carry..i still have my grandfathers / my fathers / and the knife i was giving on my 16th birthday..all the case..great knives..but way to valuable to carry in the deep woods and swamps where they might not come back..better to loose a 15 dollar rough rider than a priceless family heirloom

*All Marbles knife blades are made in Pakistan and then shipped to factories in China for assembly.. They are JUNK blades with terrible heat treating and the weakest back springs I've ever seen... I have a 3 blade MR134 & it's the biggest POS knife I own. Literally un-sharpenable. Process Game? That thing couldn't process a stick of butter.... Will not, can not take an edge...They may look nice but they are garbage. Rough Riders, on the other hand, made in China, engineered & designed in the USA, manufactured in China, some of the strictest quality control in the Industry, present probably the best knife value going. True 440 Steel. Properly heat treated. Take a great edge. High quality manufacturing..Look great, feel great, cut great.*
