The Rough Rider Classic Carbon Collection is a set of 14 traditional pattern slip joint knives. I was lucky enough to win this set as part of a National Knife Day Celebration by Smoky Mountain Knife Works. The celebration was on Friday, August 24, 2018. Winners were announced Tuesday August 28. I received the knives on Saturday, September 1, 2018. Talk about fast! Thank you SMKW for holding such a great contest! I'm honored to be one of the lucky winners!
I thought I'd share my luck and let folks know what i think about this wonderful new series by Rough Rider!

Absolutely love this series❤️ I have thought about just buying the entire current series. What amazes me is the amount of detail on every knife. I mean this is maybe a $12 knife retail and the quality is what you might find on much more expensive knives. Your absolutely right we have asked for a high carbon knife for years on Rough Rider and they delivered!

It is really pretty cool, Steve. And it has two really nice Stockmans. Maybe a sowbelly is in future or perhaps a stockman with a reamer. I'm really hoping to see this series expand. I tell you what, I think my favorite just might be that locking sodbuster but then there are few others that are just totally amazing, especially for $12-13 each!

I believe these carbon steel knives are T10 carbon steel, that’s what they were advertised as at work (I work at SMKW) this is a steel that’s either made in China, or foreign made but used a lot by the Chinese sword and knife manufacturers. It seems to be at least as good as 1095. Of course the real test is if the heat treating is done correctly. Like the videos, glad these knives are so cheap, I would love to carry Great Eastern and Case only but y’know, not all of us can do that. They really seem to be pretty good.

My RR Classic Carbon whittler arrived today and I was very pleased. If I had a complaint, it would be that it feels a little big to my hand. I don't have small hands, if anything a little larger than "normal," but I think if it were 3 3/8" .... a half inch shorter than it is now.... it would feel better, at least in MY hand. JMHO. I hope they come out with the same knife in bone scales.

@@KnifeChatswithTobias I wanted to respond to your request by saying I wholeheartedly agree that these Classic Carbons by RR are some of the Best knives for the money you can buy. I ended up buying seven of them over two months because I was more impressed at each purchase starting with the Canoe and Whittler. I used them in canoe camp this summer for basic chores and making a few utensils and things. And since I'm a fan of half-stops I felt at home with them immediately. One more thing I like is that they are a bit beefier than most traditionals and bigger which is better suited for these old hands. I give them 5 Paddles Up. LOL

These are indeed nice knives for a bargain price. I wish they'd make a Barlow in carbon steel, with only one clip blade about 2-3/4" long.....3- 1/2" handle. That would be right down my alley because these knives have stiff back springs. I don't want a weak back spring, otherwise I prefer a lockback. But RR seems to be designing all these slipjoints with good, stiff back springs.

gearhead1982, oh no! If I had problems with Trapping, skinning , and/or castrating, then I’d have issues with about half of the traditional pattern knives out there. But plenty swear by exotic woods. If you are looking for something for hard use and plan on putting the knife through some difficult paces, I'd suggest Delrin (Yellow composition) It wears well and is very durable. @@KnifeChatswithTobias Is T10 steel Good ?
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 5 жыл бұрын
@@magoolaush, i cannot give an extensive review of the steel as I have not used it much. Everything I've read says it is similar to 1095. I have had plenty of experience with 1095 and really enjoy it. I have also heard that it is similar to W1, water hardening steel also similar to 1095. Most people say: T10 is basically the Chinese equivalent of our 1095, but it has silicon added as an alloying element to improve the steel's strength and wear resistance (edge-holding) properties. T10 blades can be tempered to a high hardness and hold an edge well. As with 1095, rust resistance is low, and T10 blades must be carefully maintained. As with any steel it really depends on the heat treating. I know that T-10 is used in swords as well as fixed blades. If it is similar to the 1095 that I have used then I would say it's a decent steel. Camillus, Ontario, ESEE, and TOPS all use 1095 in most of their knives. But as I said, I've had very little experience with it personally.
@garethbaus5471

@@magoolaush T10 is simmilar to 1095 with a small amount of tungsten, the carbide forming tendencies of tungsten should make it very simmilar to W2 and a generally good steel so long as it has a decent heat treat.
