I just bought a can of powdered eggs. 1/4 of powder + 1/4 water = 2 eggs. You don’t have to worry about them breaking or going bad. Each egg equivalent costs about $0.60, and the can will last a year after opening. I bought a set of collapsible measuring cups and bring only 2 of the set: 1/4c and 1/3c. Serve with some oatmeal and a single serve fruit cup (or raisins added to the oatmeal, and that’s a hearty breakfast. My go-to lunch is tuna wraps: a tortilla and a seasoned tuna pouch with a packet of mayo from the fast food joint. I eat it with a protein bar, granola, or dried fruit. For dinner, I do a fried rice dish using pre-cooked rice in the little 1c containers, a small can of Vienna sausages, and a small can of mixed vegetables, and some soy sauce single serve packets leftover from Chinese take-out. If I want to mix it up, my HEB carries Mexican seasoned pouches of pork/beef, and again wrap it in a tortilla, and serve with a side of canned veggies. Powdered milk is also great for the field, useful for adding to coffee, making boxed meals, or just drinking.

I got one of those Swedish mess kits, a stainless steel one, it's a good kit, can fit my cup, cutlery and coffee and tea making stuff in it plus firestarting stuff, i usually cram half of a tea towel in there to stop it all rattling and give you something to handle hot items with.

@fernandomartinez3484 Жыл бұрын
Great video. Yesterday separated my rice roni pasta for this weekend and ate one portion for lunch to see how much water I needed..turns out I cooked and ate both portions. Lessen learned I'm taking the whole box. Vienna sausages is my stable and the chicken broth goes into my water for mash potato, rice or waterever I'm cooking. Great advice to practice your cook out before going to the woods to avoid guessing and forgetting things to take.

I'm with you brother I would eat the whole thing of macaroni and cheese. I might not cook anything else. I would take it out of the cardboard box and put it in a freezer bag those boxes get squished in your pack and they flare open even if they don't break open and your noodles spill out. I think old Blackie just doesn't eat as much as some of us old boys do

Last night I cut up a small jar of dried beef and boiled it for a few minutes to remove some of the salt. Then drained it. Then I heated a cup of microwave macaroni and cheese. Then mixed the mac & cheese with the dried beef and added a small can of peas.

Back before my health declined to the point where backpacking is no longer practical or possible one of my go trail breakfasts was one or two Cliff Bars with a piece or two of jerky and a big cup of coffee or tea. Could be eaten on the go if necessary with just a swig or two of water if time pressed. For dinners drop a couple of beef broth cubes in the water to cook the rice along with some cut/chopped up jerky and spices suit your fancy - teriyaki or soy sauce were my first choices. The Knorr side dish and/or Idahoan mashed potato packs were also good bases foe a dinner. Lunches? String cheeses and hard salami or small summer sausages worked and kept well. Have also used vacuum packed Kiebasa or smoked sausage - they will keep well for 2 or 3 days.

I've started taking vacuumed sealed packs of cured ham that you can find in super markets. It requires no refrigeration and I have no idea what the shelf life is but this the old cured ham our grandparents had hanging in the smokehouse. Makes good ham Biscuits and beans with ham pieces.

Dang you know all my secrets. You're the first other person I've seen heating up the Hormel meals in boiling water. Everybody I've shown that too was totally surprised. I like the single serving spam they even have spam that is bacon flavored. I like the corned beef hash but that's a lot of meat for one person if you cook it all and you really have to spend time to Brown it all it just doesn't taste good unless you cook it long enough to look like actual hamburger meat instead of ground up spam. You can do the boil water trick with Uncle Ben's different types of rice. You can get the single serving tuna salmon and chicken and mix that in with one of those rice and have one hell of a meal when you heat it up. I don't try to divide up my macaroni and cheese I will eat the whole thing. But that's all I will eat but I do like to take it out and put it in a Ziploc freezer bag it's a lot easier for carrying around the Box might break open and spill all over the place if you leave it in that cardboard box. I've also found that a pound bag of beef jerky comes in handy you can always soak it in water cut it up and add it to different things like Ramen noodles or something where it has little pieces of steak in it I have heard about heating up the eggs I have never tried it I just throw them in a pickle jar that I saved the vinegar in. What you're doing by thickening up your membrane is blocking oxygen from getting inside the egg causing bacteria to grow the vinegar also keeps the air out I've never had a problem with them breaking open but I guess in theory they probably could. I know that if you have chickens that you can take a fresh laid egg and it will last a long time the only reason the store bought ones go bad is because they wash the coating off of them. But a egg naturally would last a lot longer than what we buy in stores. I have a little cold handle Skillet myself mine's only a 6-inch when it's kind of hard to tell how big yours is from the screen but I'm guessing yours is about a nine I have never mixed the Cub Scout set with it I have seasoned the aluminum frying pan on the Cub Scout set to make it non-stick and it works pretty well I prefer My World War I mess kit as a frying pan though to the Cub Scout frying pan. It has more room being 9 inches long opposed to being a 6-inch Circle. You have a lot of good ideas Blackie keep it up I have a feeling people are going to need to know these skills coming up pretty soon I kind of agree with you those saw your water filters are great for a backup but not for a primary use. I mean using river water to cook with is no hardship because you got to boil the water anyway so it's going to kill anything you were going to boil anyway unless you're talking about heavy metals or pesticides but your typical 20.00 water filter isn't going to get rid of that either you have to get the more expensive ones for that. And of course you'd be limited with your drink mix and all that kind of stuff. I have several different types of little filters one is in a military-type canteen bottle screwed onto the lid on the inside. So pretty much I have to drink water out of that. But I have another one that's pretty small that has a little pump and a hose on it and I can pretty much filter it out of anything into something else and that would be my go-to if I don't want to boil the water. You have to be real careful and know where you're at so much of our water around the country is contaminated and people don't even know it. They watch the shows and they tell you that all you have to do is boil your water in your good to go. Well yeah sure if you are in a protected area that doesn't have heavy metal or pesticide contamination. You don't even know where those are though most of the time, heavy metal can be a natural occurrence where can flow through an old mine. But pretty much any kind of water we get down here in the south is going to have pesticides in it because it got into the rivers and creeks from up North coming through farmland. So you're pretty much going to want a good filter that can get rid of all that crap. Boiling alone isn't going to do it. Boiling only kills the bacteria and the protozoa, and of course viruses It's just like when you do your dishes you don't have to boil special water to clean them. The next time you cook in it it's going to clean it. Just the heat from the fire alone will kill anything on it some guys will just hold it over the fire a little bit and let it get kind of hot. They say that's enough to kill the stuff. What kind of makes you wonder what we have forgotten in the last 150 years that are great-grandparents dead on a daily basis. We think we're so smart and they would probably think we are dumbasses for not knowing just the simple things of everyday life I remember my great-grandparents I was fortunate enough to know them when I was a child. They live their lives through the covered wagon days all the way up to being able to fly on passenger Jets all the way to California in the early seventies. That was a lot of change in their lifetime but of course they both live to be about 90 I think one of them was a lot older than 90

Every time I go grocery shopping I'm on the lookout for food that's "compatible" with the field, and my cookset (s/s GI canteen cup & stove, and 3 pc German NATO aluminum mess kit) that's relatively healthy at the same time.
