I have made up oatmeal with brown sugar and dehydrated milk in this concept before, using ziplocks. Any way to pre-prepare a meal is time and effort saved in the field. Carrying dry foods that are ready when hydrated makes things lighter and usually more compact. I transfer much of the "woods" part of woodcraft to motorcycle adventures. From camp meals to hammocks and camp site, weight and size considerations to quick, clean, and easy, they share a lot. As always, thank you for another great video.

👍👍👍 .. I do my Oatmeal the same way .. the regular Oatmeal, not the instant stuff. Home oven-dehydrated Banana (it keeps a long time in the freezer) adds to the flavour and taste. The 5-8 minutes that it takes the oats to cook is time well spent stirring the pot to prevent burning and 'mulling' .. 'mulling' is good 😊. I do not use the instant freeze-dried meals .. my budget does not stretch that far. Correct .. there are plenty cheaper and tastier alternatives out there if one takes the trouble.

Try the half & half singles they don't have to be refrigerated. I use 2 poured over my oatmeal. Cut up fruit leathers cooked in the oatmeal are good too.

Ingenious idea, trail food and MRE's are fairly expensive, so DIY them saves a lot of money and you can put them together to your own liking. To get equal shares I prefer taking a spoon and deal it out from the bowl instead of eyeballing it. Most times I add some spices too, because I don't like the way they come. Important tip to put it in aluminium foil for other uses like cooking veggies, meat or fish in the coals.

I have an old grease pot that I like. It’s paid for and works. I like packages of red beans and rice. And those side dishes by Koor. Downside it this pot doesn’t have a bail for hanging over a fire, but it’s generally no problem to place it close to the fire. I love your ideas, it gets me going!

I've never tried mashed potatoes but I'd like to try, it looks like it's a lot faster and tasty on the trail. 'Dried Vegetable Soup Mix ' is also cheap and makes a healthy addon, mix it with beef jerky or dry smoked pork sausage + pasta/ buckwheat/ rice for the dinnerosupper. + instant soup mix for taste if needed.

Great stuff Sir! I'm always pondering and experimenting with different types of home-made MREs and making my own ration packs up with loose components purchased cheaper than a full 24 hour ration pack would cost. Often with a bit of a homage to the old school British Army ''compo'' rat packs we used back in the day before they introduced retort pouch meals. I have some mylar pouches which I can use to decant tinned (canned) meal components into for lightness, compactness and ease of reheating in the field, I generally use a stainless canteen cup, GI style, but Dutch Army issue. For rice sides I buy microwaveable pouches of ready cooked rice with flavouring and other ingredients e.g. egg fried rice, very cheap from German discount supermarkets (we have Lidl here but maybe you in the US can find them in Aldi), again these can easily be reheated in the pouch, in a canteen cup.

Some great tips, Blackie! I've been using individual food packets (such as the SPAM, Chicken of the Sea Tuna, and Great Value singles) for several years. Instead of foil, try wrapping portions in wax paper and binding the packet with a small rubber band or piece of painter's tape. If you have a campfire, you can eliminate that much rubbish from your carry-out.

I just did this with some bear creek chili mix, no tomato sauce. Potato s are a little different rule. But other stuff. You add your dry ingredients. That your going to cook and only add enough water to barely cover. Slow cook if its a tad wet. Take the lid off and let it steam off

Some good ideas I will have to try. My favourite instant mashed potatoes recipe so far is from some backpackers recipe book. Called "sunrise spuds", it is mashed potatoes, shredded cheese and pre-cooked meat chunks (bacon bits, salami, pepperoni, hamburger, whatever). With right amount of cheese and bacon it is almost a heart attack in a sack (you can almost feel your heart working harder but it is delicious. Just do all things in moderation. Next time I may try it with the gravy mix

I used to do this all the time doing Civil War encampments, and although I was never in the scouts, but my sons were same deal applied. Always good eats no matter what! The ones I felt sorry for was the dads and their kids, kids wanted to be in scouts cause their friends were and the dads who didn't know how to cook cause the wife did all the cooking? Saved a few scouts and dads from starving at meal time! Always brought extra and stashed it away.

That’s an excellent idea Blackie, especially with the instant Gravey added. In the 1960’s the New Zealand deer hunters used to do something similar (minus the gravey) but added instant dehydrated peas (probably our English heritage! ). Your idea is a great way to save money too, as you mentioned MRE and preprepared meals are fairly expensive. Thanks 🇺🇸 🇳🇿

Just another idea I've used in the past. I got a fairly big summer sausage from Costco and (with sterilized utensils and gloved hands) sliced the sausage up into single servings then vacuumed sealed. I couldn't quit catch what he was saying. Thanks.

yes what i ment to say was in some cases you may want to divide up large bulk foods into table spoons so say i got one of the prepper 5 gal buckets full of instant potatoes instead of pouring it out and cutting the pile in half again and again you may wont to figure out say 5 tablespoons worth equal a single serving for you..thats why the table spoon measuring set

I spun back for kicks. Actually he didn't say, but you can mark any spoon, even metal. Metal may just take a more careful approach, scribe with a screw bit punch. Even though I use a Toaks folding spoon, my canteen kit holds a bamboo spatula/spoon. And my packpack has a very shallow silicone spoon-like that's used as a spatula/ingredients folder-mixer. Scrape walls of pots without the noise, hits all corners and a wooden handle... ..which is one of five piece set of silicone cook worthy utensils. ~ Good idea of the markings, but that would take one marked something for each pot. Just the same, it would be good for my 2qt. Zebra pot. (-:
