No contest. Gar was better than 95% of metal drummers from the 80s and 90s because he had swing.

Gar was a jazz drummer. That background alone gave him a massive edge over Lars, who played drums as a hobby until he the British invasion of heavy metal caught his ear. Then he put an ad to start a band in the newspaper that James Hetfield answered. And the rest was history.

@@paolotorres7730 Better with dynamic, feel, cymbal work to go along with Gar's technical work. I would have loved to have him in my band. I never met him face to face. I inquired about a band he was in at the time before his death, that band was called Fatal Opera. We corresponded with one another and he provided me his phone number. I would call him about once a month and he was just the coolest mofo ever. The last time I tried to call, his number was not in service and had no idea why. Some time later, I went to Chris Poland's website for the first time and it was there that I learned of Gar's passing. I was shocked! Evwn stranger, I was taking bass lessons from David Ellefson at the time. Sometimes this world can be very odd. Nevetheless, I felt very fortunate and lucky to have spoken personally with Gar a number of times and we talked like we know each other our whole lives and he was always one of my fave drummers ever. I will never forget that. David Ellefson, even though it was business with the whole lessons things, he was very pleasurable and informing, hw showed me a lot and was interesting seeing him play the bass line to My Last Words right in front of me. His finger style bass playing is excellent. He uses the pick because it helps the bass tone to cut through the mix better. If Megadeth's guitar sound was more like Maiden, the fingers style would have done the job.

Gar was a real "drummer's drummer", and properly trained. Lars was a kid who air-drummed to NWOBHM albums, got a drum set as a teenager, did not take lessons, and has been winging it ever since. It's not a fair comparison. Of course Gar is the better drummer, but Lars has made the best of what he has for talent and his drumming is part of the Metallica sound. While he may not be very technical, he comes up with beats and fills that fit the songs tastefully.

Gar is easily technically more complex and creative then Lars when it comes to beats and rolls. Each beat and role has it's original vibe and lots of technique put into them, not to mention his tone is much better and that he was high all the time. Lars on the other hand is not technically complex at all when it comes to beats and rolls. He uses standard beats and rolls used way before he started drumming. Gar was also an influential drummer in metal while Lars WAS NOT. He brought nothing new. Also the double bass on the record on Dyers eve is most likely a drum machine since the tone of the kicks is way different then the tone in the rest of the song (you can't hear it here because of the poor quality). He never played it like that live. EVER. This should be enough for anyone to determine. No hate on Lars, just reality. Was awesome listening to him live 2 years ago, but i'm sure i would be happier seeing 1986 Megadeth.

mustaineforpresident 2016 Dave vs. Kirk is an interesting debate. Dave is obviously a wayyy better rhythm player, and that's why we all love Dave, but Kirk doesn't claim to be a good rhythm player. As far as leads go, when Dave solos they absolutely rip your face off, but I don't think he has the versatility that Kirk does where the expectation is that he has to solo in every song and make it sound great over all types of feels and styles. Thats one of the reasons Dave always has another lead player next to him, that and he obviously prefers to have a virtuoso in filling that role.

Although I really like the progressiveness of Lar's bass drums, I've heard Gar never even had a double kick, so Im afraid Gar seems to win in this case, simply from more skill. The double bass is the only edge Lars has on Gar, and that's really based on your setup. Both bands rock, Gar just had more skill. Rest In Peace, Gar

Ulrich isn't writing much because his musicianship was a put on and would never had a seat with professional musicians except he had a record deal guaranteed to him ..Gar was a professional musician with real chops..even after three decades you can barely get by with calling Lars a musician. @Martel Herold hey metallica fan. i know you think metallica invented and is the god of everything but that actually isnt true. megadeth may not be as popular, but they are way better from a technical standpoint. i like megadeth way better because its like every instrument is being used to its fullest by each player. it just sounds way better to me also. i used to be a metallica fan myself, you have to accept that just because something is more popular, that doesnt mean its technically better. it just appeals to a larger variety of people.

Gar was all over the map and could play anything from jazz to metal and was much more complex and skilled, Gar is to drums what Cliff Burton was to bass and possibly to even a higher level, just a master musician with his instrument. As a drummer myself, I have to say Gar seems to have much better quality and technique than Lars. Plus, look up some of Gar's work outside of Megadeth. His work in Fatal Opera is phenomenal. It's really technical and fits much better within the song than any of Lars' tracks do in my opinion.

In fairness this isn't a great comparison. Dyers Eve is a great song, but the only thing notable about it with regards to Lars is that he uses double kick for most of the song, and for some reason there's a huge fiaxation on can/can't/does/doesn't Lars use fast double kick live/in studio. Lars has far better songs, like AJFA, or One. Having said all that, Lars is only great in Metallica, but no where else. It's remarkable.

Lars still played everything himself. He just did everything in sections, such as the verse in one take, the chorus in another, etc... Then everything was put together which makes more sense to me, because then you can go over every section and fix things up that you feel need to be fixed up. I'd do that myself in the same situation, because I'm a perfectionist and I'd want to make sure that every beat, every fill was perfect, so I'd want to listen back to everything and analyze my playing so then I could rework things as I see fit.
@rollforeverderbs
@rollforeverderbs 8 жыл бұрын
+russkate88 That would be totally fine, if he actually played all the songs live. He didn't play Dyer's Eve until 2009 and then made a complete fool of himself. He played the other songs but he never played them as they were written. He basically did whatever the fuck he wanted in the studio and then would just bs through it and improvise live. Dave Lombardo even did a little splicing on Seasons in the Abyss, but he quickly proved that he can play them live exactly as they were written. I'm all for improvising a little bit in live performances, but that means adding, not taking away.
@russkate88
@russkate88 8 жыл бұрын
My view is that you can improvise in live performances, as long as however you improvise doesn't detract from the quality of the song, for example, a song like Fade To Black wouldn't sound good if he put in extra fills where they're not needed, but a song like Hit The Lights would sound good with a lot of fills.
