R.I.P Gar and Nick
Just for fun, without them Megadeth and even metal wouldn't been the same.
Songs:
0:00 Wake Up Dead (Gar and Nick)
2:13 - 3:33 Rattlehead (Gar - Live Tokyo 1987/ Nick - Live 1990)
3:19 Very rare footage of Gar isane drum fill
4:26 Bad Omen (Gar)
5:23 Take No Prisoners (Nick)
6:09 Five Magics (Nick)
7:17 My Last Words (Gar)
Sadly its hard to find videos with a good audio quality with Gar behind the kit.

I really feel sorry for Gar because of his heroin problem he and Chris Poland both had a bad heroin addiction before they got in the band and Gar said to Dave if you want to be great you have to do heroin and Dave replied I want to be great and it was off to the races after that for both Dave and David E or. JR Dave and the other bands members referred to David E "damn the bad choices" we all make well I know I've have made some but learned from them and also other people's mistakes. Tough way to learn by making bad mistakes or choices but sadly sometime that's what it takes at least it did for me R.I.P Gar and Nick. I ran into Nick a few times twice he and his family were on vacation and staying at the same hotel and he was very talkative the first time we have a mutual drummer friend Nick was a cool dude and at the rate Gar was going I don't think he would have lasted long he needed help no doubt 🤘💯🤘🍀🌎🌍🌟

Gar is more technical and adds a lot of jazz/intricate and pleasurable influence to the song considering his background in jazz music. Nick is a thrasher and he plays hard, giving the song more impact, power and he doesn't stop until the groove is beaten to deth. He doesn't really do the Gar fills of crash + ghost note snare except in Rattlehead. Both recorded their signature sound on their respective albums. I like both drummers.

Id argue that menza definitely takes the lead on the jazzy end, sure gar based his drumming on jazz but it was very rugged compared to more groovy jazz like what menza plays, both are phenomenal but are quite distinct

No disrespect to Nick but I think Gar was better and it’s not even close. His drumming alone is why Peace Sells is an all time favorite album of mine. Such a distinct and creative approach to every single song, and very hard to replicate. I remember hearing that Mustaine once said Dave Ellefson was their secret weapon, but in reality I think it was Gar. Their first two albums were absolute dynamite. I wasn’t really a fan of their music after Gar and Poland were let go. Rest in peace to them both.

i agree with waht you are saying here i dont think anyone will ever admit it especially dave mustaine but i think gar samuelson was the best musician out of the band when he was in it he had aHUGE INFLUENCE on the band peace sells was their first big big hit before so far so good so what peace sells was originally 7 minutes long, then gar suggested to make it shorter, gar also told dave he should focus on politics in his lyrics.. which is a main megadeth lyric style i got to talk to chris poland and david ellefson recently, i chatted with them for a bit and asked them about their favorite memory with gar, they both said it was when they were driving to a concert they were playing, and gar had a magazine with metallica on the center fold, he pointed and said "see dave, you would still be in the band if you werent such a dick" and then dave replied in a joking and funy way of "ohh fuck off" no one else AND I MEAN NO ONE ELSE could have said that to dave even chris said it i think gar had a certain effect and influence on dave that no one else in the world ever had, gar really was something else, RIP

Those early songs needed Gar. They didn’t need to be bruising. They needed to be full. Huge difference. Gar was acrobatic on the set. Light but weighty at the same time. Nick was perfect for his era, and it’s likely Gar wouldn’t be as good a fit for Nick’s stuff because they’re totally different, and so are the songs. Nick had his own voice too. Gar, as a drummer, is someone I’d rather play with than Nick just because Gar will add a fuller voice to the tune.

Gar is an original drummer, yeah he wrote drums for Megadeths classics, but what's the point of declair or choose of them the best. Mustaine changed drummers like a gloves, he seemed didn't care who's his drummer. If they were chosen they all the best.

Do beaters make that much of a difference, most of these metal beats using triggers and tiny little drum beaters from what I hear. So if your learning double bass pedal, you might hear a less accurate or the same punch as you hear in recordings.
