I think of Qud as post-post apocalypse. The apocalypse happened and the world was destroyed so far in the past that no one knows exactly what happened. The Earth is burgeoning, populations are growing again. There's a dominant sense of promise and hope where most post apocalypse stories wallow in fear and despair. It's one of the most unique settings for a roguelike, or any video game I've ever played.

On the topic of the world falling and no one knows what happened. This happened after the fall of the Bronze Age. A lot of the Greek myths, like the Cyclops, were in part formed because people living in the ruins of the Bronze Age cities didn't believe that people built them. And so they created things that could.

A little hint for everybody. Pick Mutant for your first play through. Take claws Because it can dig through concrete. And take acid and spikes. Because it gives you an Area of effect and Also a direct damage debuff application. Essentially, you're making a mutant that is a acidic hedgehog. It won't be much good in a fight at the first. But it is basically able to borrow directly through anything. So you can literally just run out of any room by kool aid man-ing out the wall. It is great for exploration in the early stages, which allows you to get ahold of a lot more than what you would normally get if you didn't have those mutant bonuses that allow you to dig through Solid stone. Which will help you in the long run as you End up with far more resources to craft things. And some of the best stuff, the Tech gear that's hidden away in chambers that normally you need to find Some sort of key hidden Or protected. But with this build. You can quite literally walk four steps to the left of the door and burrow through the wall. The acid hedgehog build. It's one of the best starters that you can do for a mutant. Alternatively, you can pick. Multiple limbs. Buff yourself on defense. And put an axe in every hand. Now you are literally a walking guillotine Just always be sure to aim for the head. Also I am very happy tex gave a mention to gamma world. It is in my opinion Is a highly unappreciated masterpiece. I can't think of any other game where you can literally be a pile of Kittens in a trench coat That work like a cohesive hive, And also have the ability to phase shift Once a day. It was originally created by tsr the original makers of dungeons and dragons. , It was meant to be a Spin off. It did use the same system, so if you want to throw your Dungeons & Dragons team into Something more wacked out in the standard fantasy You would go to gamma world. However it did not. Sell as well because I don't think people really enjoyed at the time the concept of the outright and If genuine lack of sanity let a lot of the module concepts basically Had as this was a time before what I now call in my opinion gonzo style. So it fell by the wayside. Until Wizards of the coast released fourth edition and realized that they had the licensing to it, but they weren't using it. So they created a new gamma world. Using the fourth edition system. The base game play in the book. It is really tight mechanics. But the fact is, this occurred. During a time when Wizards of the Coast were really heavy on the whole. We want to make every single game that we have just like magic The gathering. So they did this stupid thing. Where you had to buy actual physical booster packs to get cards, which had information on mutations or special weapons that you wanted to use. Which made no sense whatsoever in terms of how can a player be able to enjoy what they want to do if they have to spend real life money to constantly try to get the actual card that gives them the information of what they wish. This kind of like how playtime poppy tried to hide the lower behind n f t's It didn't go over well despite the Fact that the novels that were released were wonderful. And also the actual game play Mechanics in the book were tight. It was because they tried to turn the fact of leveling up your character, meaning you had to buy a bunch of booster packs that destroyed the entirety of the series. Even to the state wizards of the coast has no intention of redoing anything with gamma world or rebooting it or rereleasing it or anything. Which is very deeply depressing to me. Because it gave me a different alternative. before I discovered gamma world I was only given these options for rpgs. It's gonna be fantasy or cyberpunk. Until I encountered gamma world. I never thought that there could be a good post. Apocalypse RPG game. That would fully accept and thrive on the concept that once the post Apocalypse happens every single thing. That you consider to be normal, goes up and goes out the freaking window. The funniest part is in the. Fourth edition book they genuinely state that the reason for the existence of the post apocalypse It is because of a misuse of Is a certain Super collider system. The result caused all perspective and possible realities to merge into one single reality. And According to the book the current year is called six monkey slap slap But the main reason why it fell. By the Waysides is because it demanded the player and even the g m to buy these booster packs So they could stack what was essentially the Rewards. Enormous Dungeons & Dragons. The Dungeon Master determines how much gold and What magical weapons you get. In gamma world, it was based on basically pulling cards from a deck, so you would get a random selection of mutations and weaponry. Now normally this would come from the g m deck . But if you had gone out and bought the booster packs and had a specific character in mind, you could have your own deck present which you would draw from, which would be stacked obviously with stuff That would specifically help your character. The g m deck even in the initial box Was designed more as a catch all Rather than a specific reward set. Which again, this is just A absolutely terrible business practice for a Table top rpg. It forced people to pay money. In order to get cards so that way, they could actually get the stuff that they wanted in game. That's some old b******* as we used to say it back in the Old neighborhood
