Protip: Lasers in SS14, as of now, don't work with power cells. You need to stuff them into a special "charger" machine in order to reload them, unlike regular power cells. Very similar machine to a cell recharger, and can be easily made with an autolathe, but charges lasers instead of cells.

I was under the impression that you needed a separate charger for the energy weapons, but I haven't used one in SS14 yet

You do need a separate charger for lasers, it's just BPL being new and not knowing well how stuff works in 14. Poor engineers evidently didn't know either and thought they were stupid. He clearly thinks that in 14 lasers are power cell-based like in certain 13 servers. However, currently, they are not, you do need a separate charger and stuff the whole laser weapon in it.
