Well, I think the reason given for the change is that the previous blue checkmark system was seen as existing mainly for the benefit of big business, big organizations and rich and famous people. The previous system had a "notable" condition that meant someone who is not rich and famous could not protect their account from impersonation, impostors and trolls. Under the new system, everyone who applies for a checkmark is required to "not be deceptive or misleading" and they can't use the name or identifying symbols, logos of any other existing person, organization or group. And under the checkmark system they can be reported for a violation. The main change is that it opens up the checkmark system to people who aren't rich and famous. In any case, BP should probably register and pay for the checkmark. They can probably still prevent anyone from making any misleading or fake accounts. But it may be easier to get quick action against imposters if they are also registered.

Accounts are not allowed to in any way present themselves as another existing group, person or organization." Well, under the new system it may actually be harder to have a "fake account" especially with a checkmark. Even if they pay for the checkmark, they still have to be approved. If their name is deceptive or misleading, they will be rejected. I'm sure that Twitter will have an algorithm and database that will check the account name of the applicant against similar names. Anything that looks or sounds like the Blackpink account will probably get flagged and rejected. For example if someone uses a name like just "Blackpink" or "Officia1 Blackpink" it will be compared to the established Blackpink account and seen as a fake. If they use a name like Blackpink's Biggest Fan" they'll probably be okay because it's clearly not Blackpink's account.

Yeah. But that was in 1998, which is apparently part of prehistorical times. History started some time after that. (Obviously, just kidding.) BP's achievement is clearly very impressive and theiy're not even finished with their tour yet. But, of course, people tend to forget how big some of these past groups were in the days before the Internet had much, if any, impact. Some of the past tour revenue amounts also need to be adjusted for inflation. For example if the 275 million is calculated in 1998 dollars, it would easily be double that if adjusted for inflation.

I'm pretty sure they will. A lot of people are talking like under the new system anyone can get a blue check mark just by paying for it. That's not true, they also have to apply/subscribe to the "Twitter Blue" program, which involves registering their names, display (images, logos, etc) and other things. If they try to register something that is deceptive or misleading, it will not be allowed (at least according to the rules). Basically, the blue checkmark still provides protection against imposters and fakes. The main difference is that ordinary people (i.e. people who are not rich and famous) can also apply to protect their accounts against imposters and fakes.
