Blackpool Pleasure Beach 125 Documentary

Introducing our Blackpool Pleasure Beach 125 Documentary, a celebration of how the Pleasure Beach has made adults feel like children again over 125 years. In 1896, Blackpool Pleasure Beach set out to become an American-style amusement park which made adults feel like children again. As fans of the Pleasure Beach, we all know the history, we know the park was built on the beach, we know when the wooden coasters were built, when the Big One was built and so on, but what makes Blackpool Pleasure Beach so special?
In this documentary, not only do we hear from a member of the Thompson family about the history of their family and the Pleasure Beach, but we hear from the fans who are season pass holders, fans who have only visited once or twice but loved their time at the Pleasure Beach, fans who have visited once a year every year of their life, fans of the park who have worked at the park, for the park from an external point of view or work within the attractions industry, and every other BPB fan you can think of. This documentary is a collection of memories, celebrations and stories of the Pleasure Beach all brought together from fans who live all over the world but all have one similarity; Blackpool Pleasure Beach holds special memories for them.

This is fantastic. The pleasure beach’s heritage and age is what makes it so unique. My late great grandparents worked at Blackpool - great grandmother on the trams and great grandad in the tower. Their son - my late grandad would go to pleasure beach regularly as a kid and young adult to enjoy the Dipper, Grand Nash and Wild Mouse. And 60 years on from when he used to go I’m now going and not only enjoying the same theme park but some of the same rides he rode back in the day. Gives me so much joy just like it gives to others across the country and world.

When I was little, we'd have one or two summer trips every year, depending on what coach trips were running. We'd go to Blackpool every single year and i loved it. I remember when Nickelodeon land was Beaver Creek, and i went on the little boat ride, I loved it. Then as a teenager I had many great days at PB, I particularly remember being on valhalla, scraping my hands across the snow and lobbing it at a friend. Such good times! Nowadays I love the avatar ride and the red arrows, theyre gentle but give good airtime. I also have to go on Wallace and gromit umpteen times!

I have fond memories of coming to the Pleasure Beach years ago, but miss the rides that are no longer there, the Wild Mouse, Cable Cars, Monorail Log Flume, used to enjoy the Fun House in my stockingfeet but the Reel was before my time.

Such an amazing documentary so interesting to hear everyone’s memories of the pleasure beach and the history of some of the rides. Pleasure Beach has always been a place I’ve loved to go every summer. I love hearing the sounds of everyone having fun on the rides and the thrill! My favourite rides in particular are Alice in wonderland, the Derby racer, gallopers, avalanche, flying machines and my absolute favourite the ghost train! I remember first visiting the pleasure beach as a youngster and I remember being terrified of the laughing man at the time I never knew what automatons were until now he’s still an icon in the park and I love hearing him laugh in his chair.

Great documentary, really enjoyed it. Makes you realise just how important the place is in the amusement industry. I live 40 miles away from Pleasure Beach so it's always been a big part of my life. We had family that lived in Fleetwood so growing up we'd go regularly. So frequently in fact that it's really difficult to pin point when the first time was and was rides stood out.

Fantastic documentary. I love the soundtrack too. It brings back so many top memories. Went loads as a kid in 90s . My favourite rides then were monorail, Tokeydo express and the old log flume, We always went to the big pick n mix shop in the dome building

Been coming here since the 60's.. So many rides have come and gone and the days when you paid for the rides. I used to sit on the beach waiting for it to open. It used to open at 2pm and the first I could see was the flying machine start working. I knew it was open then and begged my parents to take me! Used to come for a week or sometimes 2 weeks! Happy days! 🥰

Blackpool Pleasure Beach is an institution across the UK and one thing among many that they should be very proud of is the fact that it has remained a family business for all that time. Too many family business are suck up into the corporate vortex and this is not one of them. Such a rich and important heritage which comes across in the experience, it's very important to everyone visiting the park, even if they maybe don't realise it. Fantastic documentary and an awesome tribute to Pleasure Beach 125 year anniversary. Im from The UK and 48 years old and have still never been there. I've been to Blackpool to visit friends in deepest winter and walked around it but that was in the 90s 😂 I really should finally visit in this special year. I've been to all the other parks and my fave is Paultons Park because I just don't think the Merlin parks try hard enough to move forward with their parks. Blackpool, like Paultons is owned by the original families and they deserve credit for continually adding to their parks and investing...and of course looking after the people that come through their gates. Congrats again on the documentary and maybe I'll bump into you some point this year when I make my way up from Essex 😁😁

Brilliant Scott, just brilliant. What a great mix of interviews and park footage. Loved the drone shot @0:50 and for some reason the scene @31:10 . Imagine being able to say your family coined the names Big Dipper and Ghost Train! I think the thread running through your documentary is 'memories' , for me that starts as a little boy on Derby Racer with my auntie, sadly no longer here. I can hear her now laughing so much. Have to admit I 'do' miss rides like Gold Mine and Log Flume but nothing stays the same.

I have so many fond memories of PB ever since I was 1 years old back in 1992 when I visited the park for the very first time then my love for the park just grew and grew over the past 29 years. Great work. Fantastic documentary and brought back my earliest memory. Guest house out the back of the park and seeing from a distance the Grand National being tested. When my parents told me we were going that evening I felt sheer joy. End of September (Glasgow September weekend) and in the park in the dark. The nerves I felt queing for Playstation and then finally the Pepsi Max. Amazing memories. I am a huge fan of the channel and thank you for the hours of entertainment especially in the last 20 months. Long may it continue.

Great video!! scott, best theme park documentary iv seen in a long time. My best memory of BPB is the 2nd time i went to the park around 94/95. I was bricking it to go on the Big1 so i chose the revolution, the 1st major thrill seeking coaster i went on as i had only been on the cyclone in Southport. From there it was the "revolution" of riding BIGGER an better rides. I was the same it was early 2000's i went on on the big1 an all i could remember was everytime i got closer to the station i kept feeling like i needed a No2 even thou i didnt. I do remember my parents driving there before it opened to look at it, an we stood outside an looked up an there was a man on it riding it non-stop. Im sure it was for the Guinness book of records. This video needs to win a theme park vlogger award cause it was so gripping to watch.

I used to goto BPB as a kid alot... Dont have many memories of it but the one i have is from the late 80s and just being amazed at how amazing the Grand National and how amazing the park was at night when it was opened to 11 or 12. I always wanting to get back to Blackpool as a kid for the Nash and the amazing atmosphere at night. As an adult theres nothing better than taking your kids to BPB.

Don't think I could figure out what my actual earliest memory of the park is - my family holidayed in Blackpool every year from when I was a really tiny child! Fantastic early memories of Beavers Creek rides, and particularly going on the Zipper Dipper (Blue Flyer) again and again and again, even making friends with other kids who were doing the same thing!

Brilliant interviews from a wide range of fascinating people, excellent work 👏. It does spark memories of Blackpool as a kid, my first memory of the Pleasure Beach, I went on the old log flume with my dad, getting the photo of it, which is somewhere in a draw around the house. Then going on the big one with my brother, and being in a panic that I couldn't work out the seat belt (even though I had been on a plane before), it must have been because I was excited and nervous about going on it, after the first drop anticipation was over and the thrill of going down it was realised I soon relaxed and just enjoyed the experience. Since that day I have never feared going on a ride, though that's not to say I haven't regretted going on some awards (anything that spins around at speed are a no for me, as I suffer motion sickness, which doesn't effect me on rollercoasters, except Infusion since it moved to Blackpool, don't know why)

Great video that had me sat here with a smile on my face nodding most of the time in agreement with some of the memories being shared. My earliest memories on the Pleasure Beach could be a combination of a few years, maybe around 1979/80/81 when I would have been 4/5/6 years old. We used to park at the back near the Roller Coaster then walk through the underpass and into the park brining us to the toilets at Alice In Wonderland. My Mother and Father, Grandma and Grandad would all use the toilets, I used to stand there waiting for them all whilst watching and listening to Alice In Wonderland and at the same time being absolutely petrified of the Skeleton watching and mocking me from the Ghost Train with its intimidating animated jaw. All this was going on whilst being surrounded by the smell of popcorn and candy floss with OMD's Messages being played from somewhere in the distance, maybe The Monster ride.. It took years for my Grandfather to convince me to put some litter in the mouth of the animal waste bins outside Noah's Ark, I was scared of them too Lol. Then there were the two big wheels near the entrance all operated by Mr Funshine turning his crank, or so I thought. Also touched on in this video, I too used to love how open the front used to be so we could watch the Log Flume and have a cold drink at the pub on the corner. Did anyone else get treated to some pop and a bag of Fish N Chips Crisp at that pub? My God, all this was the best part of 40 years ago now! Good times, and thanks for the memories Pleasure Beach and Thompson Family.
