Blacksmith forged fire poker without forge welding

Forging a fire place poker with split point that does not require forge welding. This is a practical and useful tool for use in the fireplace, wood stove or out camping. This would be another good Christmas or holiday gift idea

The ring of the anvil in this audio is so loud, it actually makes me really happy I have a cheap Vulcan brand anvil that doesn't ring like that... If it did I would certainly need hearing protection. Tinnitus isn't a fun thing!

John, have you ever made one of the blow-poke's? a fire poker with a hollow tubing so you blow on the fire with it.

This is one of my favorite videos of yours, I keep coming back to it for reference. I've made about 3-4 of these as gifts and they've all been really well received! The one part I have to keep looking up is the final stock length you ended up with, so for future reference it's 1/2" by about 23-24" 😁

Nicely done, I really want to start simple forging like that, I don't want to go the axe or knifes route, but simple home/shop accessories like hooks and pokers things like that!! Thank you!!

Thank you. While lots of new smiths love making knives, I will try to focus mostly on simple forgings. There should be a video on a ball end coat hook up in a few days.

Actually making knives has little to do with forging, and much more with stock removal, complicated heat treating, different steels and their qualities, shapes of the blade, different handles and materials and so on. That's why it is called a 'bladesmithing'. I prefer much more this classical blacksmithing projects, there are just way too many bladesmithing and too less good blacksmithing channels.

Thanks for sharing some of what you have learned with all of us. After about 30yrs Idle whoopin steel and using my shop for more gas and diesel mechanic issues and projects I feel that I may dress my hammers clean a few tools and take some of your advice and make a few things before I get too stoved up to still speak that old hammer language...lol I remember one of my kin tellin me it was mighty strong morse language. This is a great project. I have been avoiding making them because of the forge welding needed in the other style. These are so flexible as well, twist here or there, square or round, short or long, so flexible. Thanks for sharing your skill and knowledge with me. I greatly appreciate it.
