Blacksmith of Moydrum

This award winning video tells the story of a family of Blacksmiths in Moydrum County Westmeath at a time when their profession was so important to everyday life that the yard was a major meeting place and the center of local rural life.

Delighted to see Hattons forge again it bring back great memories of going down with Kitty to be shod indeed everything that broke was fixed by Richie Hatton the plough, harrow ,the mowing machine they kept the farmer working. as Ernie and George said it was a meeting place in those times and exciting to be holding the horse while Richie made the shoes and fitted them right there in front of you, and to help with the bellows you felt part of it. 60 years on I clearly remember Mrs.Hatton bringing us in for tea and her beautiful home made currant cake.
