..there have been many youtubers making these and they didn't work on the first try. they usually chuk them aside and make another when they should have shined up the striking surface. Great info sir...

Thank you, if you notice it takes a few strikes to get a decent spark so the decarb happens in the coal forge as well, just not as deep. This is also why blacksmiths say forge thick, grind thin….

I use a gas forge, I take mine to bright orange, past magnetic, then quench in water (a thorough quench) and then anneal the tines and anything I want to soften (avoiding the strike plate) with a propane torch with the strike plate in water to ensure it stays hard. As you say you have to de-carb on a grinder to get them to spark. I have settled on using old files now for my strikers, they spark very well and look great as I retain the file logos.
