Blacksmithing - Forging a foothold trap (Bear trap)

Forging this foothold trap was a really good project, i have never made anything this complicated before. It was my the first time forging and tempering a spring and i think it turned out pretty well! I need more of this !!! I have big problem with skunks and weasels on my property, eating chikens eggs ducks. I don't know how to forge but i make 4 traps with welding and springs from valves of car, and in midl for bait i put raw egg. Only problem is firing mechanism, need to upgrade that.

I’m no trapper but I inspire to be an engineer I’m in 11th grade so I’m curious about this stuff I’m just asking not arguing why didn’t you use another spring on the other side to give double the power I just want to know because I want to learn.

Good question😃! The reason i only used one spring is becuse one spring is enough power for this kind of trap. You could add another spring, but it would increase the weight, and that adds up if you have to carry many traps at once 😄

hello brother :D! the spring is forged from spring steel, and is first quenched then tempered over the forge to a spring temper :D

Wtf are you talking about? I've caught my hand in plenty of my own traps and it's just a constant pressure and that's it. No pain or broken bones or anything.
