Great video! With you covering BSF and me covering the original and Silver Tower in this much detail, we have Warhammer Quest under control on KZbin! ;) My group is playing through Shadows Over Hammerhal right now and we are loving it. Stage 6 of Chronopox seems really weird to me, it's almost less threatening at stage six being that it only causes damage if your character has no wounds when prior it doesn't matter if they have wounds. I would imagine that late in the game most of your characters would have wounds and if not it only effects them once as long as they dont heal.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 4 жыл бұрын
It's because if you were getting an auto-wound every single activation round you would almost certainly die. In the early stages it's a random chance. But yes, it does feel like it goes a bit easy on you at the end. This almost seems to fit thematically with the chronopox time dilation though - later in the gestation period it's actually less virulent than in the early stages.

Sawbone Station, it was talked about in Escalation and it's here in No Respite (it's kinda a Respite though). Ohh I love this, love this! Jokaero! Jokaero! Jokaero! Also love how Blackstone keeps using the Explorers as Antibodies/Medicine/Probiotics! Spoiler of the Darius Hinks book: Also just wanted to say, you have your wants. Though for some of us we'd rather not have choatic mututations on the explorers we are part of, especially beneficial. Though I do want to see more Narative too. Both in game and just storyline. Both for Blackstone, I'm stating it. I think this is The Will of Eternal, I call him Will or Wilhelm. As above Spoiler about the Darius Hinks book, the Daemon Fluxus got it wrong, it isn't Old Unfathomable, this Blackstone Fortress feels he is a he. At least that's what I'm seeing so far. Also going to put it out there, have you tried to do conversion on the hostile cards? I've been thinking about doing such, both for some conversions for the Blackstone Game, and also for the Hostiles. I want more Narrative!
@Alittlefruitgoesalongway

Hey, a couple of questions here. I know that Escalation is required to play this because of the tiles, but if I were to get this and Escalation at the same time, would playing this first mess with the story, or does this not rely too heavily on sequencing or following up the events of Escalation? I have similar questions for Traitor Command and Dreaded Ambull, as in if I decide to get them later after Escalation, would I be missing out on story sequencing or can they kind of be separate one off adventures? I currently have the base game and the two small card expansions Endless Peril and Advanced Arsenal. I really like the idea of painting the nurgle guys a darker theme like they are corrupted traitor guardsmen or chaos space marines, and I like the creepy zombie/diseased feel they could give the game, so I kind of want to jump into that but if you think it's worth waiting till after I eventually go through the earlier expansions then I may hold off on it. Any suggestions would be great, thanks! I loved the video by the way!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Lots to unpack there! So... The game does follow a narrative and the intention seems to be to play the expansions in sequence. However, the main "arc" comprises the base game and then Escalation (which immediately follows on from the events of the base game). You shouldn't play Escalation until you've completed the base game. The other expansions sort of "fill out" the narrative and create more intrigue and help to combine the Blackstone Fortress into the main 40K timeline. Those expansions are really to show that there are lots of other forces all swarming toward the Fortress, and that there are also native inhabitants that have a part to play. However, it should be noted that the Dreaded Ambull almost forms a "two-part" story with the Ambull mission from White Dwarf / the 2019 Annual. In the Dreaded Ambull expansion you learn of the Ambull's existence, and then in the follow up mission you have to lure it out. But really, as long as you complete the base game, and don't play Escalation until you have done so, I think you can really tackle the rest in any order. (By the way, I have painted up some Death Guard in dark "Blackstone Fortress" colours.)
@Alittlefruitgoesalongway
@Alittlefruitgoesalongway 4 жыл бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Awesome, thank you so much for the quick rundown! I really appreciate it. I'll play through the base game and finish that, and then I will probably get Escalation next and play through that before getting the other smaller expansions. I'm still interested in all of them eventually, but I will have to pick and choose for now based on available time and money. So I'm glad that I can follow the main arc with just Escalation and go from there based on what I'm most interested in at the time. For my nurgle chaos marines and pox walkers I will probably try to give their armor or clothes something similar to what their traitor versions would wear, and then differentiate them by making their mutations and wounds look a bit blighted and gross. I think I would like that better than the standard pale green that GW gives plague marines. I think I like the idea that these marines were and are in the process of getting corrupted, so they still resemble normal chaos space marines. Plus a darker look would make them a bit spookier, as they shamble through the fortress. Anyway, thanks again!

I haven't seen them in person, but have seen pictures. I think they look great, and a lot of people will really appreciate the added visual element, but they're not for me. They add extra set-up time, which is already a bit of a drag in this game, and they look like they are going to get in the way of placing models on the tiles. It's more stuff you need to worry about storing (when you have as many miniatures games as me, that's always a concern), and you're going to need to buy more every time a new expansion comes out that has new terrain elements, which is just more money for an already expensive game. Also, I have a lot of things I want and would rather put my hobby cash into that. I wouldn't want to dissuade anybody from buying them if they think they will enjoy them, but like I say, not something that interests me.

Thank you for the review. I've just picked up Blackstone Fortress. I have the annual and the Dreaded Ambull expansion. After watching this I definitely want to pick up Escalation and No Respite. I'm curious if you feel that Traitor Command is still worth picking up? You mentioned that Escalation is needed to make No Respite useful. Is Traitor Command necessary for any other expansion? What I'm wondering is how much I miss out on not getting Traitor Command. Thank you for any thoughts!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Traitor Command is the odd duck in the set, really. Apart from GW mentioning the ogryn is a powerful enemy useful for throwing against the "army of one" characters they have published in White Dwarf (and the annual), they have never really made any other reference to that expansion since it launched. You don't need it for any other expansion, and it's a pretty self-contained adventure with just a few hints in the fluff as to how it all links into a larger narrative. It's also the simplest expansion, with a single mission that involves running around collecting data slates from enemies you kill and then using those data slates to access a single stronghold encounter. The miniatures are fantastic, and the new enemies are a welcome addition (it's nice to have a big enemy that occasionally pops up for a fight), but of all the boxed releases, it has the least value in my eyes. It is worth pointing out that it looks like the small card packs for Blackstone Fortress are already out of print, and Ambull and Traitor Command were the first boxed expansions, so they may vanish sooner than anything else. If you want a complete collection, keep that in mind! You may already know, but I've done reviews of all the expansions on my channel. You might want to check out my coverage of Traitor Command to see if you think it's something you might like to add.

If they do an annual for Blackstone Fortress @ year-end/next year, do you think we'll see all the stats etc for these in the next one?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 4 жыл бұрын
The annuals are mainly to compile content from White Dwarf magazine (with a few bits of new content added as a purchase incentive for those people who already have the magazines). The first annual didn't include any content from expansions, and I wouldn't expect the next one (if they do one) to have that sort of content either.
@popburnsy3207
@popburnsy3207 4 жыл бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I get that the annual was primarily previously shown White Dwarf material. But, I was wondering just due to the fact that these are otherwise easily attainable models that they might get the same sort of consideration as annual material. It just seems like an easy feature to add to the annual given 1) how common these models are and 2)how easily they could have done this expansion as a White Dwarf article as opposed to a somewhat pricey expansion
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 4 жыл бұрын
I really don't see it happening, I'm afraid. I actually don't believe they could have done this as a White Dwarf article, and I think that's selling this expansion a bit short. There's a fair bit of content here, and there's no way they were going to include all the affliction cards, medical marvel cards, encounter cards, tokens and cards for tracking the spread of the diseases, new Precipice tiles, new enemies, four strongholds and a special reward envelope in a magazine. Not even as something to photocopy and print out. It's way too substantial for that, and they would want a decent return on the time they invested. But who knows? Maybe one day they will do an enemy card pack like they did for Shadows Over Hammerhal, making it easier for people to drop in miniatures from their collection without buying the expansions.

Nice review, do you think there will be an add on for this expansion? If not I can't think that they missed an opportunity to include the Malignant Plague caster to this expansion, like you the models included are a disappointment but not a deal breaker, last but not least do you think 6 Poxwalkers are enough?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 4 жыл бұрын
It appears to be a completely self-contained mission (with the usual Easter eggs and threads that link into a larger narrative), so I don't think they will expand it. However, an adversary card pack that allows people to add other enemies to their games isn't beyond the realm of possibilities as they have done that in the past. As for poxwalkers... I guess, yes and no. They have an ability that makes it much easier for them to respawn (it halves the reinforcement roll), so they do have a bit of a swarm mechanism baked in which makes them seem more numerous. However, one of the six poxwalkers blows up after each attack it makes, and if you draw two poxwalker encounter cards it's very likely that six models won't be enough to fill both hostile groups so I don't think you'll ever feel like there's a truly overwhelming horde approaching. Also, in one of the strongholds there's a special rule where guardsmen and cultists may rise from the dead as a poxwalker. You're supposed to use slain poxwalkers for this, but I think it's well worth having a few extra poxwalker models so it's more likely you have a model to use and you don't deplete the poxwalker hostile group. I can see people buying at least another frame for this purpose (fortunately, I have more poxwalkers than I can shake a rotting leg at).

@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 4 жыл бұрын
You don't normally get to keep inspiration points; however, a special rule in No Respite is that when you discard an affliction at Sawbone Station you get one inspiration point per affliction (maximum four). These are for use in the next expedition. If the character goes into stasis instead, the inspiration points go into stasis too. They are used the next time that character comes out of stasis. Because it's possible to have a lot of characters in stasis the expansion gives you a lot of inspiration tokens.

yeah I hope so. normal Blackstone is way too easy. I play it with some competitive 40k min/max players and abominable intellect has been a must to up the game outside of house ruling. @@Alittlefruitgoesalongway That is a plus point. You can get these miniatures for about £5 a sprue on eBay, so it's easy to get some more miniatures to make sure that you never have empty spawn points, which is certainly possible with the design of the current encounter cards and how many miniatures come in the box. There are also some special rules in some scenarios that you can make more threatening by using very simple house rules in conjunction with more poxwalker models. I didn't want to spoil too much about the scenarios, so I didn't really delve into it in the video, but anyone who knows anything about poxwalkers can probably figure it out!

@@gjoenge Unfortunately, as I said in my Abominable Intellect review, I thought adding more models was a pretty lazy way to add difficulty and created more weird situations than it solved (although I've seen a few people now who really liked it, which is cool). Have you watched my video on house rules? The main rule is I nerf crits (from 3 wounds down to 2), which makes a massive difference to how long enemies stay on the board. It's particularly good for enemies with three wounds (such as sergeants). They normally don't feel much different to regular grunts but now they require more concentrated fire to take down as they shrug off the first crit. I also introduced armour saves for large and huge enemies. Just those two minor changes have made a big difference to my games.

No Respite is really good, it has some interesting ideas and some fun missions, but it's really only four extra strongholds that don't tie into the main narrative. Like I said in the video, I think people who don't have these miniatures will be happy enough, but there's no denying these are incredibly cheap, readily available miniatures. The £37.50 price tag doesn't sit easily with miniatures that you can pick up for £10. It makes it obvious this expansion has been significantly marked up and they are charging the best part of £30 for a few small decks of cards. Remember, the cost of this expansion doesn't have to cover the cost of designing, sculpting, or tooling the moulds for these miniatures. Those costs are long paid.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring maybe it's because I come more from boardgames than miniature games but it seems that these expansions have always been too expensive. This one is a slightly better deal but still. What matters to me is how much content and what quality we get... Whether the sculpts are new or not... That doesn't affect the gameplay one bit.

@@mikolajwitkowski8093 I had a long response to this, but I felt my teeth getting loose, so I stopped myself! I do appreciate your perspective, and you're not wrong about anything (expansions have always been too expensive, and new sculpts don't affect gameplay). But GW have put a premium price on a product that didn't need to have it, and this was an opportunity for them to make a less expensive expansion (which would have been nice considering you need to buy Escalation first to even use it).

It is indeed a medical station (run by jokaero, no less). Good call. I did report on the inclusion of the medical station in a Community Tab update last weekend. I try to add extra info there when I have it and can't do a video, but I'm not sure how many people read it! Thanks for watching.

Less than a year out and this is already impossible to find. Ridiculous.

No Respite actually sold out within a couple of months. It was a very short production run, and I think they were just trying to bridge a gap in their schedule before the next expansion came out. It's a shame a lot of people missed out on it.

Unfortunately the Blackstone expansions are now very desirable and command stupid money on the secondary market.

Whenever you quote the price in pounds where you are, when I type it into google for conversion to US I get a wildly different number. What exactly is the currency where you are at? IE: I type 60 dollars to pounds and it says 46.33, I believe you said it cost 37.50 pounds. This is why in your unboxing for 40K 2nd edition, when you said it was 40 lbs I was comparing it to a SNES game, because according to the method I am using that equates to $51.80 US. Oh wait, that was Midwinter Minis Channel, but same issue.

I'm in the UK, but Games Workshop don't do straight conversions to other currencies. Something that's £37.50 here is $60US, 50 Euros, or a whopping $105 Australian!
