DEEP PURPLE Non Blackmore Studio Albums Ranked WORST TO BEST #19
Here's the promised follow up to my =1 review.....
Blackmore left the Deep Purple back in the early 90's and some people still can't get over it.
They just put out a new album =1 which is getting rave reviews but has everybody forgot they been putting out bangers for nearly the last 30 years.
The band has put out 9 studio albums With his replacements Steve Morse and Simon Mcbride after he left (and 1 in the 70's with Tommy Bolin) plus countless live albums and the output to me like Bananas, Now What?! and Whoosh! is pretty underrated.

Are you from New York? It's cool to know that people listen to Deep Purple there. I always thought the band was huge worldwide but never got the credit they deserve in the US. Nice list! Purpendicular is also my favorite post-Blackmore album. I was a bit disappointed when Abandon was released, but "Seventh Heaven" is one of my favorite songs from the Morse era. New Album is good, Bleeding Obvious is my favorite. Regards from Brazil.

Yeah, I’m from New York. If you check the older videos I was in Massachusetts for a while. My fellow Purple and Rainbow fans are far and few between here. DP plays much smaller venues in America and don’t get the recognition they do worldwide. I watched the DVD that came with the new album and realized they still play the big European arenas. I also looked up their chart positions and their albums still are top 10 around the world. Every time they put out a new banger everybody thinks they’ve retired years ago.

Gonna give these latter day Purple albums a chance. Two listens whether it’s on Amazon or Spotify or here on boo tube. Gave Bananas the 2 listens this past weekend in between a heavy dose a seventies Trower albums and you are right man, this album kicks ass!! I’m buying this one now 🤘 impressive album.

I’m so glad I turned somebody on to this album. Totally underrated, even by the band. “I got your number” is one of my favorite DP songs. “Haunted” is too. I notoriously don’t like When a Blind Man Cries, but if Ian Gillan wants to sing a ballad every night, play that one.

@@Mike-aka747 This might be controversial, and it might make for a good video but I'm not a Zeppelin fan. I actually love LZ II, and have LZ III, ZOSO, Houses of the Holy but never loved them. We're pretty close on our Deep Purple lists! And you counted Concerto! I think I'm the only worst to best video that counted it. It does stink! BUT the reissue does have the only live version of Gillan singing Hush waaay back in the day. We're far apart on Fireball. I love the title track, Demon's Eye, and Strange Kind of Woman (although some copies doesn't have it) but I'm pretty indifferent on the the rest of the album. I'm a little sad Battle is in the bottom of the middle but Slaves, Book, and House in the top 10! Thank you! Those are also underrated albums. Whoosh! at #6 is totally justified. Machine Head at #13. Controversial but you know I love that because real fans have them because they dug deeper into discographies. It's DP's Paranoid or Back In Black. Your probably sick of hearing those songs for the billionth time. I probably got to make that Whitesnake worst to best I never got around to. Mean Business rules. That song is so good it's why I have a big criticism of early Whitesnake. Jon Lord seemed to be a background player and only jammed out once or twice an album. I like that version of Whitesnake but don't love it because my expectations, probably unfair, is that it should have sounded more like DP.
@PiotrLangtvedt
@PiotrLangtvedt 4 ай бұрын
@@BlackTerror I always count Concerto because it's all new material. I am glad you think the same! 👍 I saw a video of Steve Morse's worst to best with DP here on KZbin when "Turning To Crime" didn't got a mention because "it's only a cover's album". I gave that channel some "words of truth". 👊 But I see it from time to time when people pretend that some albums that they don't like didn't happen like "Lulu" or "The Cosmos Rocks". I love "Fireball"! The sound, the groove, the prog elements and the fun. "No No No" is Jon Lord playing beatifully, Ian Paice shines on "Fireball" and "The Mule", Ian Gillan's lyrics on "Fools" and "No One Came" are amongst his best in his career. Beside that the album cover is one of the best in Purple catalogue. Even the outtakes of that album like "Freedom" are fun to listen to. 🎵 "The Battle Rages On" has some songs that don't grab me like "A Twist In The Tail". Also the sound both of music and vocals is kind of "powerless". But I still like the album a lot. The only albums I don't like are the last two on my list, Concerto and Rapture. They are boring (Concero) and weak (Rapture). On the latter I only like the title song. Don't forget to have "Unzipped" on your list when Whitesnake comes around! 😉 Everyone misses that out for some reason. 🙀

@@PiotrLangtvedt You got to go full completist. I gave up on Jefferson Starship because that's too convoluted and I really only like the Mickey Thomas stuff. Cosmos Rocks counts, and I'll even throw in Brian May's first solo album in retrospect. That's a Queen album with only Brian songs. That said, a Whitesnake list is a conundrum. Do I count the pre WS Coverdale albums. Technically its the band without a name. Coverdale Page I can't exclude and if I count the pre stuff I have to do Into The Light and Restless Heart which has the name but is really a solo album. I have to think of a way to word all of it. And I never even heard of Unzipped.

Abandon is the true masterpiece of the Morse era, a unicum from beginning to end as were In Rock & Perfect Strangers (even if very different), the first 3 albums of the Morse era innovative and beautiful, then the last 4 with Steve boring, flaccid with Gillan who struggled to find winning vocal lines and talked too much.... with =1 we finally returned to a more direct and melodic hard rock and also Gillan was more facilitated in writing beautiful vocal lines

Agree but Abandon doesn’t do it for me. The new album is also meh. Too much synthesizer/ songs are too short. It’s a poor man’s MachII. @teec3557 0 seconds ago Ian Gillan said he didn’t choose any of the songs on Turning to Crime. Agree about that album - love it. ABandOn - that album has grown on me big time Purpendicular Come Taste the Band Now What Bananas Whoosh ABandOn Infinite- Birds of Prey is through the stratosphere Rapture of the Deep =1 Turning to Crime I separate as a guilty pleasure Bob Ezrin has taken the power out of Purple. Whoosh might be their best written material but he has condensed the sound / buried Morse in the mix/ Airey does not know how to make the Hammond crunchy and growling/ Gillan way too high in the mix. Have you ever thought about doing a video conference show? I like to push back on the typical narrative
@BlackTerror
@BlackTerror 3 ай бұрын
Even though I don’t mind Bob Ezrin’s production I think using him for the last decade made every album too much the same. Strange thought I had. When I first heard Whoosh I thought it was great but could have sounded a little better if it was more atmospheric like Pink Floyd’s Momentary Lapse or Division Bell albums then I remembered Ezrin did those too! He should have looked up his old notes. I’ll probably never do conference video. Most videos I make now are totally on the fly made during lunch. It would be funny to do a metal version of that old SNL bit with Dana Carvey yelling at everybody on a panel. “Wrong!”

I grew up listening to Deep Purple, love them to bits. But lets be real here... anything after "The Battle Rages On" is totally forgettable (which did not stop me buying all these albums by the way) Here is what happens: I am getting exited that they release a new album, pre-order, listen to it once and shelve it. By the way I played "Abandon" recently and it kind of grew up on me... but not by much.

While I like all the Blackmore-less albums, my top 3 are the only ones that I play regularly. I know I could make a playlist myself but I’d love it if they put out a greatest hits of this era. Something to condense this era. Give me something to collect and give it some official weight. They dump all the songs after the tours so maybe they’d feel more special on a compilation. Abandon is getting a lot of love in this comment section. I might need to revisit it. Maybe it’ll finally grow on me too.

Morse era music Purple is the best. I’m older and grew up with Mach II during my hormonal teen age years so it’s in my blood. But as I get older the Morse Purple is far more interesting and complex. Musically on fire. Bananas/Purpendicular/What Now/Whoosh (though Ezrin’s mixing and production suck on this album) are great. The song and guitar work on Birds of Prey on Infinite is mind blowing. = 1 is meh. Poor Man’s attempt at Mach II without the heavy Hammond/ too much synthesizer and forgettable riffs
